ABOUT GCL mb GELATO DIVISION mb SUBSCRIPTION THREAD

What is a Geek Chat League?

A Geek Chat League is a weekly discussion-group format for people who love gaming and enjoy talking about games. It is intended to foster depth and familiarity, producing engaging content and worthwhile interaction. Members get to know one another, establish shared interests, and generally develop a friendly and productive environment.

Of necessity, each division of GCL is kept relatively small (typically between 12-16 members, though individual divisions may incline one way or the other). A tight-knit discussion group tends to function more smoothly than a free-for-all. It allows individuals to be heard and understood, and for each participant to keep up and enjoy multiple topics as the week progresses. The format is geeklist-based, and lists are not published to the BGG front page.

Policy: If you're a lurker or have otherwise discovered GCL Gelato, feel free to read along with us and see what the members have to say on everything under the sun. If you have a constructive comment or something else you think would add to the discussion, consider posting it — if it's helpful, respectful, and polite to the discussion group as a whole, as well as to its individual members.

Games this Week

Together with three colleagues I have a gents' game group midweek. For the first time, I won't be supplying the game, as a Ken Follett fan eagerly snapped up this title in an effort to contribute to the group. He and I took it for a 2P test drive on Tuesday and really enjoyed ourselves. I look forward to the full 4P experience this coming week.

I got in three more variant games of Paris Paris with Kidlet. He's never been this focused on a single game before. Maybe I have a budding gallophile on my hands. He says he wants to someday visit all the places on the map. I guess another Euro trip is in order.

We played two kid-variant games of Mr. Jack, as well.

Two games of Click Clack Lumberjack. He really likes putting the pieces together. Then he carefully taps out a single piece of bark. Then I do the same. Then he fells the whole tree in a single swing. Then we set it up again. For two hours on Thursday, the experience was about as zenlike as one can get with falling plastic timber.

Finally, I am thrilled to have Roger as my 1989 & Vassal coach: I sent the first pre-turn/setup file off today!

This is the week that was:
Cuba Libre 1

I played a solo game of Cuba Libre to help me write my review of it, which will be out... as soon as I can get the time to actually just work on it in a nice uninterrupted fashion!

But a few things are going to take priority this weekend.

I've also got PBEM on the go...
1989, two games including one with Tommy
Pax Porfiriana
Cuba Libre, along with Jon and Wendell
Here I Stand, almost fallen over, but seems to be on the brink of revival
Unhappy King Charles, two of these, including one with Jon
EuroFront II - the Spanish Civil War scenario, where I am long overdue to make a move

The Week:

x2 Commands and Colors: Napoleonics (9)
x2 Hanabi (good)
x1 Age of Steam (10)
x1 The Great Zimbabwe (9.25)
x2 El Caballero (increasing)
x1 Dutch InterCity (8.5)

Cati and I managed a wonderful week of games. My work load was a unexpectedly light and we had several impromptu game nights.

We played a couple rounds of Command and Colors. We are now 2-3 scenarios away from being done with the Russian Expansion. I managed a thunderous win as the french in the first couple Borodino scenarios. We will see if I can keep it up as we play through the end. I think C&C:N is reaching that critical mass of scenarios where I am beginning to feel like I should stop buying them and instead just start over from the beginning. Of course, I want to play the Austrians...but I may not end up getting the Prussians.

Hanabi is fun. Cati loves it and it will certainly get played.

I played a wonderful teaching game of Age of Steam midweek where I trounced some newer players. Standard newbie error of not understanding how much is at stake in the auction. No one went bankrupt though and everyone had fun. I don't know if the game will make it back into the rotation but at least there are some interesting players floating around Austin.

Last night I taught folks how to play The Great Zimbabwe. The game went well though I taught the game terribly. I should have reviewed the rules since my last play. Ah well, the game easily made new fans and I remain convinced that this is the best thing to come out of last year's Essen.

Cati and I finally moved up to the expanded game of El Caballero. It's much, much better. I was initially pretty worried about this buy but I think I'm coming around to it. We will see what the next set of games brings. I'm a little worried that it is in that valley where the game is deep and interesting to deserve attention but too random to be worth anyone's time.

Finally, I finished my javascript/node.js build of Dutch InterCity and played a round with some friends. What a great game!

The Week Ahead:
Lots of games on the docket and games arriving in trades. Next weekend is the big Ogre release party in Austin so that should be a good time. Additionally, I think I'm going to get my last game auction together before the baby arrives. Hard choices ahead.

As some of you may have noticed, I had to take a break for a few weeks from BGG and mostly from the Internet in general. The funny thing is, I was actually in the middle of Berlin. You would think they have internet there and that's mostly correct. However, I spent the last 4 weeks back in the military and the casern is next to Tegel airport. Somehow, they (probably the airport, not so much the military) seem to block off mobile phone reception in that area. So I got to check my emails and log into BGG only about once per week. Needless to say, my computer at work was blocked from accessing large parts of the internet.
Long story short, not much internet access and not too much gaming going on for me. I did find the opportunity to visit my brother in Dresden on two of the weekends, though, and there I got to play a game or two.

During my first visit, we first played Mice and Mystics and afterwards Galaxy Trucker. I'm not a big fan of dungeon crawls but M&M was interesting and I probably liked it better than Descent 2nd.
GT was great fun as always.

During my second visit two weeks later we played Julius Caesar (some horrible die rolls and a humiliating death on the battlefield for the big cheese, leader of my armies, Julius himself) and a 5p game of Battlestar Galactica: The Board Game. BSG is a game I currently re-discovered. It can be awful with the wrong players but if you get the right bunch of folks together it is great fun. I became a Cylon midway through the game and managed to pull off a toaster-victory.

Most of my pbem games continue although my absence has slowed them all down considerably.

Six players was too many for either of the top vote getting games for our group last week - Bora Boraor Pax Porfiriana and so SC: DD hit the table. Literally. As in dice rolling everywhere. Our team won. Yea, us. yuk Yeah, really not my kind of game. Not because it was loud or fast and at times silly and confusing. Just because it isn't my kind of game.

Followed that with a KS game that the FLGS owner asked us to give a try - Blurble gulp My ratings/comments on the game don't begin to express my disdain for it.

Finished up the night with Sticheln - possibly my favorite trick taking game.

Games:
Quarantine x1
Hornet Leader: Cthulhu Conflict x1 (3 missions)
Leuthen: Frederick's Greatest Victory 5 December, 1757 x1
Afrikan tähti x1

More to come about the games.

Started reading the new Locke Lamora book: The Republic of Thieves by Scott Lynch. So far enjoyable.

On another topic, I think I'm tipping the scales towards being called a wargamer.
Looked through the Essen Preview list and found only 3 items of interest amongst ca. 500.

Airlines Europe: New Bonus Connections Will pick this one up when it becomes available in the geekstore.
Might & Magic Heroes Loved the PC game back in the days, so this one has the nostalgia thing. Not high on my list, but interesting. I guess it won't do what i liked about the PC game.
The Capitals This looks very cool, but need to read more about it before putting it on my wishlist. Might be a bit too heavy for the crowd I play Euros with.

What interesting things did you folks found from this years offerings?

Quote:
GAMEREPORTS:

I decided to bring out Quarantine after reading abit about The Capitals as it is another Mercury Games offering. I set up a 3-player solo learning game. Not often I solo Euros, but this game is one I know I have to know the rules for if it is to go down well with the wife and other friends.
I had no idea what was a good strategy during play and played a number of rules wrong.(Didn't limit Greysles placement to adjacent, paid for Opened Room contracts, didn't leave cubes on unbought Rooms and such) So the game would have been different had I played the rules correct. I mixed in the Quarantine: First Aid Expansion and both of those rooms was in play. I don't know what good some of the rooms do, but I guess that comes with more plays. I saw some rooms that was more useful than others. ANd I am not sure if you can put Greysles on rooms with other patients, but I'll find that out before the next game.

Score at the end of the game from left to right.
15-13-17. Closer than I expected, but then again I only read what gave points completely halfway through the game.

BUT, I had fun and didn't once look at the watch to see what the time was. That is a good sign as it means the game was exiting. Looking forward to trying it with other players.

Leuthen: Frederick's Greatest Victory 5 December, 1757 was a solo affair with Historical setup. This isn't the most exciting of situations with knowledge of the force distrubution, so it isn't a game that really works well solo. I did start a vassal game early in the year, but the module was bad and my daughters health made me put vassal on the backburner. I have yet to try this game f2f with hidden setup.

In Hornet Leader: Cthulhu Conflict I finished my short Marine R`lyeh campaign.

Attacked one target on Day one. (Shantak Attack) Loads of AIM-120 saw every last one destroyed on turn 1. Easy mission. Suffered no Insanity on the Post-mission attacks. Didn't really feel any different to regular HC.

Day 2: Attacked 2 targets.
First target was disposed of with AGM-154's and was destroyed on turn 1. Suffered no Insanity. Is this it? Really no more common with insanity? Started to get kinda

Second target was a small 4 hitter and Thor in his Stealthy jet took a Harrier with him.
Harrier disposed of his AGM-65's and inflicted 1 hit. Thor shot his AGM-154 and did another hit. Now the Harrier took off home and Thor had to fly to the center to drop his MK-20's. Nice to have him ignored on 1+ and he flew in and dropped 2 MK-20's and both hit homeruns for 6 damage total to the 4 hit site. Now Thor just needed to survive this Cthulhu hoard.

Some Stealth ignored, some misses, some Evaded and on hit later he flew out of there in a Shaken state and suffered Kopophobia on the Post-mission attack.
Yeah, Insanity. Cool, but so far no effect.

Third day with 7 VP for an Adequate result, I drew Targets and choose a 1 VP Target to get to a GOOD result.
4 planes needed 4hits on the Target.
Target bound event saw my lone Harrier get to Level 2 with his Insanity and get Damaged and lose his AGM-65's.
3 AGM-154's later the Target had 2 hits, and I had no AtG weapons left. Do I go for the Cannons or split. Having all 4 aircrafts start in the Pre-aproach made me split, but some event cards and some Insanity attacks later I left that day with 1 Pilot at Level 1 Insanity, 2 Pilots at Level 2 Insanity and 1 Pilot with Level 3 Insanity and 3 of the mgot Promoted because of the Experience points gained from the Insanity.
Cool game, but still only an Adequate Evaluation.

Happy Canadian Thanksgiving Everyone!

This Week:

Misc:

- Roger and I have figured a way out of our "New Model Army" card issue and now have launched into the waning turns of UKC. I am in a slight quandary as to what to do, but have some plans afoot.

- Wendell and I continue play in FitS. The Battle of Rabaul is brewing; carriers vs carriers.

- And the Cuba Libre session is underway. It will be a getting to know you kind of session for me (and I suspect all of us). I also have a solo session on the table.

- Went on a bit of a buying spree. Actually, I find that I often go months and months and MONTHS without buying a game, then suddenly there is a bit of a frenzy. Well, the latest has hauled in:

Yes, it was very excessive, but I had some spending money on me and also some store bonus, so I went stupid. So I am in the midst of the game fondling stage. I wanted to expand my CWBS collection and I have been curious about the GCACW for a little while now. After listening to the latest "Guns, Dice and Butter" podcast where they mentioned an Atlanta campaign addition, I finally cracked and picked up BAtC. The Fed Commander module adds some races. Not sure how to explain picking up F&E though. That was a Moment of Weakness. Sigh! I will regret it at some point, just not now ....

- This past weekend was one filled with food and friends. We did our own turkey dinner on Saturday (with pumpkin pie I might add ... cough ...) and then had a fantastic Thanksgiving potluck with friends on Sunday. Lots of food, drink and giggling kids.

- Jury duty this week! Maybe .... I have to call in the day before and see if they really need me. This is a first.

- Starting to think about the Great Fall Cleanup....

- I noticed an excess of recently acquired beer in the pantry, so will have some friends over on Friday to help me get rid of it.

Earth Reborn
Express 01
Wooden Customized Card Case (will be built to order for UpFront)
Espana (w/ Naval Exp.)
Card Trays (2)
Jours de Glorie IV
German Rails
Runewars Figures (4)

The card case is the most expensive item. If Up Front is not published, I'll use it to start acquiring the other expansions out there from Artscow and various and sundry other sources. But I hope it's republished.

This past week, these interesting things happened in my games and my life:

1 ---> I started the 100-Game Play challenge for the GCACW. I will be tracking these plays here.

2 ---> Promotional testing is over. I did *not* do well. The studying did not pan out the way I planned it, but no excuses.

3 ---> My wife is pregnant again! We are expecting in April next year. Yay! This pregnancy has been much harder on her, and for that reason, we think it's a girl.

4 ---> I Kickstarted two projects. One was a set of prepainted 15mm American Civil War miniatures for use in playing tabletop minis games. I've always wanted that. The other project is still going, and it's some beautiful fantasy tokens that if funded will be designed and minted by a real coinmaker out of Ohio that has been in business since the 1800s. They really seem to have their act together, but the coins are not cheap in price or quality - unlike some other Kickstart projects. I don't have much faith that the coins will reach their funding goal.

5 --->BGG Con Countdown has started. I have a stack of rules I have to re-read before the Con so that I will half-way know what I'm doing when I show up. Much to my relief, I realized that I didn't really need to read the Here I Stand rules this year! I feel pretty confident in them for once.

Cheers! I'm so glad to be back and participating in GCL.

I was traveling most of the week so nearly zero gaming. I did do a turn in Andean Abyss though.

No gaming at the club this past weekend, as I was out of town - my wife and I, my in-laws and parents all went to Louisville for the St. James Court Art Show.

This is a great art fair in one of the grand old Victorian neighborhoods of Louisville. Hundreds of vendors, selling their wares, from paintings, to jewelry, to sculpture to scrimshaw! We got there early on Saturday morning, and it's a good thing, because rain started pouring by Saturday afternoon - so much that they had to cancel Sunday's show.

My semi-weekly face-to-face game of Paths of Glory was also on hold this past week as my opponent was in Las Vegas cleaning up at the poker table. Getting together again tomorrow though. We should be able to finish up with one more session, I think.

On the solo table in my study I finished The Battle of Lepanto. This was a quick, easy game, but lots of fun - lots of chaos with so many ships slamming into each other!

I did an AAR here: Showdown in the Ionian Sea - October 7, 1571

Also played on the solo table:

I played all four factions, rather than using the bots. I'd read the rules for Andean Abyss, and watched some video coverage of it, so I was basically familiar with the system. The trick here was knowing WHAT I should be doing with my actions for each faction each turn. I basically stumbled around, trying foolishly to stamp out 26July elements with the Government forces, while the Directorio and Syndicate ran rampant. The Directorio ended up winning, with skillful use of the Pact of Caracas to freeze out 26July from padding their opposition. I think I've got a good enough handle on the rules to teach it to some of the guys at the club, so we can play a four-player game next time we all get together. As for strategies to suggest to them, though... that's still a work in progress.

No gaming this week ... soblue

But my FLGS called; Rising Sun: ASL Module 13 finally arrived, with a whooping price tag of 153 Euros wow
Given the fact that my ASL play at the moment is non-existant, it's a little crazy to buy it, but ... what the heck! You only live twice once, as good old James Bond put it ... I'll pick it up tomorrow.

My Essen preparation is in its final stage, my shopping Geeklist is finished. I'm totally looking forward to this - as every year. 2 days on the road, 2 days of running around, browsing, chatting, buying. Hurting feet, not enough sleep, too much alcohol every night ...
I wonder if my doctor will tell me one day, "Son, you have to quit Essen, or ..." meeple

Arrived....

Absolute greatness.

But for the hexes that are a tad too small for the counters. AND of course I have two sets of the said (thin) counters. Will glue together to get decent game pieces. But hey, that's just me, your "counter" mileage may vary...

Preparing a review of this vintage WWII game.

The 1943 campaign in Sicily was one of the first primitive wargame prototypes I created in my golden youth.
