Andrew B2, Paul and I are in the middle of an online Brass game with T101 James (absent tonight in the distant market of Scotland) so we were fired up to try the game face to face, and were joined by Gordon for his first play.

The less said about my strategy the better. I went straight into shipyards-- I now see that's a stupid way to begin the Canal age. Quite a number of wasted develops, double-actions builds, and a total of four loans later I had to pass my last two actions with nothing to do. I got three shipyards out but not too much else. I was surprised not to do much worse.

Paul positioned himself as first player with plenty of £££ at the start of the rail phase to do a railway blitz, using the masses of coal he'd clever positioned across the board. It worked well although coal mines don;t score a huge amount in points themselves.

Andrew B2 did a mixed strategy with coal, iron, and selling lots of cotton and a strong rail network-- fingers in every pie but shipping.

But Gordon, on his first play, seemed to have no trouble at all. He swept the board masterfully in the canal age, spreading coal and iron just when it was would get him the most money, and in the rail age nabbing a shipyard too. We all thought he'd peaked on turn 13 when loans were no more and sagely told him that he should have taken a loan. But Gordon had enough income not to worry and continue to steam ahead, if you'll forgive the pun, right up until it was time to tot up the Final Scores:

Gordon 118 (8)
Paul 110 (9)
Andrew B2 108 (9)
Russell 104 (8.5)

A great game, I enjoyed it despite my "unorthodox" strategy leaving me feeling pretty desperate at times.

Light and quick playing, but a good blast of memory and social deduction, with attractive (though flimsy) cards.

I'm guessing that Mascarade will become a staple filler in many games groups, and it is a good contender for the 'impress the drunken family with an interesting and accessible game this Christmas' title. It's certainly the 2013 game I am most likely to pull out at an all ages event this year - although only well-sleeved. Do not let your long finger-nailed relatives loose on these cards unprotected!

Despite an atrocious performance (I built a mighty engine, which started firing exactly as the game drew to a close), this probably goes to the top of my pure euro list.

This is a true euro, no denying it - cubes and middle-ages Europe included - but it's interactive and directly competitive, with room for some dastardly tricks.

I don't have scores to hand, but I can say our resident FLGS Chris schooled us in medieval trade chicanery. Coincidence?

After a cool reception last games day (despite the enthusiasm of my 7 year old son) I feel it necessary to evangelise for this lively little game.

I think it's great for what it is - a quick fire tricks and traps battle for dominance... light, yet scratches some of those CCG itches - all about spotting the killer combo which maximises your area control, while confounding the plots of others. Limited strategy, but plenty of tactical decisions, I am enjoying it plenty.

It even inspired my son to create his own two decks - vampires, and dragons. A budding designer in our midst!

Forty-five minutes to go and there was just time to try to smuggle a love letter to the Princess. (We'd had enough of macho steam locomotives.)

Paul 4 (6.5) new
Gordon 3 (7.5)
Andrew 2 (7.5)
Russell 2 (7)

It's not the deepest game but it keeps you thinking and laughing throughout, and it's a cleverly minimalist design.
