Let's admit it: We're obsessed. All of us. With board games, and maybe other things.

But for now, let's not talk about the other things.

Apart from the obsession with board games in general that we all share, I'm inspired by my own obsession with one game in particular to ask about your smaller-scale obsessions. Do you have any obsessions that border the unhealthy with any particular games?

I understand the opposite of an obsession with any particular game, within the scope of the broader obsession with all board games, is what we'd call the typical collector ... are you a collector? Gathering games left and right with abandon, whether you might actually play them or not? If you do, what inspires you? If you don't, what makes you hold back and think things over?

PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

This is my current obsession. I'm in the lucky position to get to play once or twice per week over noon, which is a lot for me - and I've gotta collect 'em all when it comes to the cards. Even obtained a second copy of one or two data packs (the ones with Jackson Howard and Kati Jones) - and whenever a new data pack comes out, I tear apart all my decks and rebuild them from scratch...

Do you have a game that you're obsessed with? One that keeps on giving despite how often you've played it? Is it a recent thing or going on for years? I think I know a few, but let's use another opportunity to talk about our favorites yet again

My theoretical obsession. A game I rarely get to play, and where I have nobody who builds their own deck and surprises me, and where I still gotta have it all and look forward to new releases and relish in building decks and tearing them apart every so often. And still, that I actually get to play is so rare it's unreal...

Do you also have games you'd love to play all the time with everybody, where you barely find anybody to play it with? What games are that, and why do you think you don't find anybody to play them with? Are you trying hard enough? And if not, why not?

Remember when I was obsessed with this one? I certainly do. Now, it mostly sits around, waiting to shine again. I still respect the game. Others came before and after it (Yomi, Race for the Galaxy, there's more) - I'm obsessed with them for a while, and then let them go again.

I wonder whether Android: Netrunner will ultimately meet the same fate?

So, when you're obsessed with something, does it last? Do you keep playing the games you've played tons in the past, or do you keep switching like the feeble mind that I am, always attracted to the next shiny thing?

Just a few years ago, I was fanatically following the cult of the new and bought up to a dozen completely new games each month - quite a few of which I never played, and lots of which I sold for nearly nothing last month, still unplayed. Including this one, maybe somewhat obviously so.

Are you a collector? Do you relish in knowing that there are games you have at the ready for just the right moment? Do you enjoy having as many games as you do, or do you have second thoughts about some of them?

A game I have never heard of leads the [geeklist=160666][/geeklist] list. I'm sure it's awesome though. Haven't really read a lot about the games there ... I'm slightly saturated, I guess, and enthusiastic about so many games already that there's little space for so much new stuff.

How about you? Are you going to conventions, are you in Essen right now? Would you like to? Do you follow the new releases there, do you have any favorites?

I learned the rules. I took it along to a game meeting or two. It's not usually my type of game, being all Euro and no combat and all, but it got so many heartfelt recommendations from friends that I know I'll eventually try it out.

Do you own games that you got purely based on recommendations from friends, where you don't know whether you'll actually enjoy them and whether they'll fit your preferences at all? Are you looking forward to playing them? Do you anticipate that this will happen any time soon, or do you expect a longer wait?

I really like this game with the right group. It's very neat. Both times I've played, I was enamored with the way the game works, and with the way it makes the players interact.

And yet I have no desire of owning it. The very one group I'd play it with anyway already has the game in its collective possession, so there's little motivation for me to own it.

How about you - are you happy about games that others own that you know you can play when your friends want to, or do you have to own the games you like?

Games played from 2013-10-03 to 2013-10-24:

Again, all the plays since the last time I wrote a GL item about them

Android: Netrunner: 6 plays in 4 sessions

Less plays than before, but still, there are some. Right now, I only have wacky decks:

A Whizzard deck that's all out on destroying everything he finds - I moved to Demolition Run with Medium and Nerve Agent after Data Leak Reversal didn't quite work out .. the whole tag juggling business is an awful lot of work...
A Chaos Theory deck that's hellbent on making Darwin useful.
A NBN TWIY deck that only tries to tag the runner and drop a couple of Scorched Earths.
And finally, a Jinteki deck that really wants to Bullfrog the runner into an Edge of World.

Experiments, all of them. But lots of fun to play. The last three plays were me with Whizzard against my friend with Jinteki.

Legends of Andor: 1 play

Played with four, the first scenario. And we made an appointment for the second one. A lovely gathering of friends in the evening. I can't imagine playing this game over and over, but it's a great activity for when you want to meet friends and spend a wonderful evening with talk and play. And there's both lots of theme and quite some decisions for everybody.

What we've noticed is that the first scenario seems to be quite a bit easier with four than with two, because while the spaces in the castle do scale, how hard it is to get from one point to another gets easier when you can have friends help out with slashing that path free. (I hope that's spoiler-free enough )

Antike: 1 play

Well well, I didn't really shine in this one. Pushed towards the middle of the map early and then had way too many fronts - and one of them was against the guy who was about to win the game. Should have attacked him, but that would have left my back awfully open against three others, and would also probably have failed because he had strong defenses in his cities.

So ultimately, I guess I was kingmaker through lack of action.

I liked the rondel mechanism, and would gladly play this one again. The whole sea forces vs. land forces thing is interesting, the temples make attacks into enemy territory tempting, and the VP mechanisms make for a good race or two.

7 Wonders: 1 play

I actually gave this as a birthday present to a friend once. Not sure whether he played it, but now I finally did. I kind of was positively surprised; there's actually a game in there. And there seems to be a strong focus on strategy indeed - which I didn't understand, overestimated some early cards while I underestimated military, and thus wasn't exactly anywhere near the top in terms of points. But I was actually having fun.

Recent Acquisitions:

Do duplicates of datapacks for Android: Netrunner count? In that case, I got two Android: Netrunner – Opening Moves, one (second) Android: Netrunner – Creation and Control, and one (second) Android: Netrunner – Humanity's Shadow.

The cards I blame for the second sets are Jackson Howard, Kati Jones, Surge, Daily Casts, and Dirty Laundry - mostly (edit: forgot Atman, of course!). I'm considering a second Future Proof, for a second playset of R&D Interface, which I like. Did I mention I'm obsessed with this game?

On Photos:

Not sure whether you've noticed, but I haven't uploaded any photos in a while - haven't gotten to do as much photography as I'd like. But remember that photography contest I entered a few weeks ago? This picture here got me the first price:

HEADLINER

I fly home on Wednesday and will be in the U.S. for two months!

PLAYS 8/26/2013 - 10/26/2013

Snowdonia x 11
7 of these plays came from Snowdonia Week: A Collective Solo Experiment!. The other plays have all been very satisfying and interesting. This is a shining star in the worker-placement genre. Thanks to Jon for pushing me over the edge on picking it up.

Through the Ages x 9
All online. All still great. It blows my mind that I'm not tired of this game yet.

The Rivals for Catan x 3
Ash and I are still deciding how much we like this one. It seems to have a runaway-leader problem, but we like the feeling of it enough that we're giving it more opportunities than we usually would.

Suburbia x 3
Ash and I have enjoyed exploring this one further. I'm starting to see the bottom though. I'll be watching reports on the expansion to see if it adds any depth. I like the flow of the game enough that if the expansion adds depth and some additional decisions/strategies to consider, I might pick it up.

Finca x 2
This one has been a hit down here in Fincaland. There are Fincas all around our little town, and every town has its own little market on specific days of the week. So when I explain it, I explain it in those terms to the people here. They are immediately enamored by it. And it offers such great decisions with such a simple rule set. It's a fantastic game all around.

Parade x 2
Just a nice filler to have with the families down here.

Qwixx x 2
Same as Parade. Nice, fast filler. Easy to teach. Good for the right moments.

Modern Art x 1
Taught this to a few friends and they liked it. I really like it for a pure auction game.

Pax Porfiriana x 1
Played a solo session and it was good for learning the game, but I have other games I prefer playing solo. I want to try playing a 4p game during my time home.

Planet Steam x 1
I made some mistakes in my first session of this, but still found a game I very much enjoy. I'm hoping to get it played tonight with all the rules right!

Video Game

Portal 2 - Completed the campaign. This is an amazing video game. I loved it right up through the final credits that had me laughing out loud.

RECENTLY ACQUIRED

I have a few games sitting at home waiting for me:

Runebound (Second Edition) - Got this from Ryan Bruns' auction that benefited his son. I probably paid more than I needed to, but wanted to help in the cause. I'm excited to give it a go with my nieces and nephews. I'm also considering bringing it back in January for an adventure solo game.

Polis: Fight for the Hegemony - Hopefully Ash will like this more than she did Twilight Struggle. I want a good, deep, 2p game we can explore together in Guatemala next year.

NOTES

I'm really looking forward to being home to play more games with my family and friends, the N.U.G.G. and attending a couple scheduled game days. It will be nice to be home for all the holidays too.

Since Guido opened the door to sharing a photo, and I am feeling excited about the time I've spent here in Guatemala as I look at coming home for 2 months, I thought I'd share a photo myself:

This photo is important to me and Ash. We feel a lot of emotion when we see it. We have fallen in love with the women of Guatemala, and we feel for them. There is a disturbing presence of machismo in this country. We hear stories all the time about how women are treated as a "lesser" gender here. Domestic violence and other crimes often get swept under the rug because of the attitude that exists here. Ash is currently creating a project that will hopefully make a difference in this area; even if it's only a small difference, we feel moved to act on it.

To us, this picture shows the hope that comes with a new generation. Their Guipiles (traditional clothing they're dressed in) are hand made; usually by someone in their families. And if they don't make themselves, they are very expensive--usually a couple months' worth of their salary. Every color and shape has meaning. For the most part, men don't wear their traditional clothing anymore. But the women hold strong to their heritage and many families prohibit the women in their family from wearing any kind of modern, or Western-influenced clothing. We love that they hold strong to their traditions, we believe it gives them strength to get through some of the challenges they face in regards to machismo in the country.

The Guatemalan women are strong spirited, hard-working, and beautiful. We have learned a lot from them.

This picture represents all of that, and a lot more to us.

Thanks for letting me share.

Almost forgot to add my plays, though I didn't have many to report.

2
Biblios

Cribbage
Hermit

I hadn't played Biblios in awhile so that was fun. It's a great filler game but similar to Magnate I've reached the point where I don't really feel a desire to play it anymore. I can still enjoy it but I wouldn't seek it out. Hermit was fun as usual and of course Cribbage which is one of my most consistently played games of the last year.

Games Played (10/13 - 10/19)

I was busy at an out of town conference much of this week, but I took a couple solitaire games with me for relaxation.

Field Commander: Alexander x4
My first playings of this title which I've owned for ages. You take Alexander through a series of campaigns and score against how quickly (or whether) you complete certain objectives. Its a bit of a puzzle, but the theme holds up fairly well. At least for a solitaire game, I found the level of complexity to be about right to make it interesting but not deterring.

Lectio x1
Always fun. I don't care so much for Tichu (just never played it enough to get good at it, or willing to do so) but this one fills a similar niche. Something about those thick tiles really appeals to me.

The Princes of Machu Picchu x1
Another playing in. Not everyone is receiving this one as well as I have liked it, but there is at least a little bit of local enthusiasm for repeat playings. Its not a rondel game exactly, but its most closely related to them that you can see the similarity.
