Well, we moved, so September was the first month since May 2007 that we skipped. It was great to have everyone over though and break in the new game room!

In our 8th Annual Puerto Rico Tourney Todd became the first person ever to defend his previous title and win the tourney 2 years in a row. He did it with not only clever play, but a real aversion to Sugar.

Previous Champions:
2006 – Adam Daulton
2007 – Ross Gerke
2008 – Brian Preston
2009 – Adam Daulton
2010 – Brian Preston
2011 – Adam Daulton
2012 – Todd McCorkle
2013 – Todd McCorkle

Game 1:
I went all out shipping, scoring 33 points off of it, but just never had enough money to get myself to get a large building. Todd got three of them, which sealed the win for him. Phil was more a middling player and didn’t go heavy building or shipping.

Todd 54
Phil 47
Adam 45

Game 2:
A really close one, where despite scoring 49 points, Jerry failed to make the cut.

Barry 53
Gary 51
Jerry 49

Game 3: Championship
Todd will have to fill us in, but I am sure he built a lot again and took yet another win. Barry said he was very happy about coming in second as he normally doesn’t do well in Puerto Rico.

The two guys who didn’t want to play in the PR tourney pulled out this brand new one over to the US of A. Brian took the win. I don’t know what that means, but probably that he stacked and traded houses better than Mike.

This a 2 hour game of Suburbia, which is ridiculously long for this game. Despite that, I’m guessing this will win our Game of the Year award this year, just from its popularity.

Finally we got it to the table again and this time with me there. There were a few rules questions along the way, but I think we fixed it up. I want to play this one again. I think it took me ¾ of the game to really understand it. There was a lot of back and forth, us stopping Barry, us stopping Alan, us stopping me…wait a second! However, in the end Alan got the win. Barry and I both then realized we could’ve scored one more point and got the 8 points as well, which would’ve got the victory for Barry. Real close game with some really awesome table appeal. Really glad I have the player aids for the tiles.

I think they played one less round than they normally would to shorten the game. I would like to play it eventually. I know Patrick said he really likes it, but I noticed he was using a stop watch to time people’s turns, so maybe not as much as he put on.

We had 6 players, Barry suggested this unknown game to many, we sat down and played it. It lasted about 2.5 hours with rules explanation. I think I would’ve liked it more if it lasted 1.5 hours with rules explanation. It has quite a wide footprint, sorta reminds me of Idealogy, his other game. Lots of cards. Just some really crappy luck can absolutely screw you in this game. For instance one turn I got his by pirates and lost all 6 goods in my ship. The next turn Alan sent a ship laden with 6 olives to the same spot and had good sailing, selling all 6 for a gold apiece, because of an olive shortage. Would’ve it changed the game if the cards had come out the opposite? Yes. 2.5 hours invested for one flip of a card that wasn’t really that exciting, not the most fun. Then there is the wonders! So I go to Athens to get a Wonder and they just decide what wonder I get to build? And it is random? So I get the wonder that only helps me if I have an academy, but I can only get it, if I use papyrus to build the academy and then use papyrus again to build the wonder. So why am I building a wonder that Athens told me to build?

Yes this reads like sour grapes, perhaps it is, but the more I’ve thought about it, the more I think this game is bad.
