What better way to stay dry than stay inside and play a whole dozen games, most of which centered around AUCTIONS??

David's first time playing this classic. I had done horribly in this game with AI recently by waiting far far too long to get stuff, so I decided to call Ra like a madman and take stuff and run. Since I was devastated by my lack of Pharoahs and never could get enough grey with out black killing them-- this strategy obviously didn't work either. Congrats to A-M pulling out a squeaker !!

Whaddya know? Kel is newly learning a new classic that is rather thinky and almost WINS! This really is a wonderful game-- but A-M as Juan stated before was totally NOT into it-- which is very valid. Now that I have indeed gotten to play it ( Thanks for teaching David !!) I can see that if it doesn't " click " fairly close to immediately-- this could be a hideous frustrating experience because it can be rather fiddly, the bidding mechanism of multiple characters to bid is quite inventive while at the same time being somewhat wonky, and the whole enterprise obviously either totally captures you with its mix of mechanics OR just drives you somewhat bananas with it's fiddliness. I actually lead 85% of the game going for as many palaces and special cards as I could, but David made a quest of almost ALWAYS ( probably 8 of 12 ) winning the elephant auction and chaining the goods points to high levels, hence he passes me during the last few auctions. I will be very stoked to play again but this is not a new 10 for me, just an 8 -- for a game that's akin to this I think San Marco is somewhat more elegantly straightforward and not nearly as fiddly. ( And honestly, I have a huge peeve about confusing icons ( SEE: My hatred for RFTG) -- I know the cards are printed they way they are so you can fan them from either hand, but seriously, I don't quite grasp why IMHO the cards are printing so confusingly.*)

* -- Cue all the hater assholes currently trolling various RFTG threads who basically tell everyone who hates the icons that they are morons and have the intelligence level of a special-bus riding lemming. I hope some of you are going to BGGcon. I also hope you have roommmates who are going to put bugs and spilled food into your beds.

David followed up with his Cleopatra Meanieheadness by constantly snarking at my strategy to ALWAYS try to drive to end the round as quickly as possible once I had 4 of something. And yes again, David compoubds his nmeaniheadness by winning, ALMOST.

My strategy HAS worked before-- this is a HIDEOUSLY rare game I have won a few times by A LOT with this strategy-- this sessions was OBVIOUSLY not one of them.

For David to be barking the investment/payoff ratios at us at a machine-gun constant pace -- oddly he couldn't see this game was 4 rounds.

This shall go with Cleopatra in a future list of " Things not to play with David because he snarks the whole time, then kicks your ass." Still one of my all time favorites, the different-kinds-of-Auctions mechanic never fails to thrill me. Even when I suck.

One of the most interestingly bizarre takes on auctions in the whole auction game genre. You are restricted on the bidding because you are trying to win numbered cards and you cannot bid those numbers once you acquire them! Also add in the fact that a la Boomtown/Dream Factory et al, the auction win monies get distributed to everyone ELSE per those numbers PLUS the fact that the economy is COMPLETELY closed ( there will NEVER be more than 12 chips per person in the game) -- and this is definitely unique in the auction genre.

To be honest as much as I had been trying to get this game to the table for ages and as much as I am often a Schacht fanboy-- as this game's first few rounds took place-- I thought-- Humm.. maybe this is just TOO odd and wonky even for me.

But OMG-- as you start collecting numbers and your bid choices become fewer AND as you see what OTHER's people's numerical choices are dwindling down to as you use that info to force them into WAY high bids they possibly can't make-- I realized this game is actually brilliant. A new 9 for me and and I am very very excited to play again !!

Juan expertly gets many more color sets than A-M or I and takes the win.

ANother thrilling and fun experience of this little gem. As stated in Juan's comments-- we had a WHOLE NEW monkey wrench thrown into the mix as Seb decided from the 2nd round ON to totally wonk his father's excellent strategies in this game by indeed playing BLIND-- just throwing a card unseen at random down for his bid !! Juan still pulls out the close win!

A-M had her best game of this ever it seems-- and my horrible performance was not quite as horrible as the scores belie -- I actually missed probably 700$ of prizes by TEN dollars on the cards-- but still that was enough to destroy me !! Can't wait to play again as usual !!

One of my favorite charming designs that is so ingeniously simple one wonders why no one thought of it before !! Another of the keep-things-that-don't win-the-bid-because-you-get-possible-bigger-points-later sort of card games. I am wondering if perhaps this didn't TOTALLY click to J and A-M at first because it's FAR FAR too rare for me to win ANYTHING-- much less by SO MUCH.

However I did luck out with some perfect card combos-- I always had enough 10s and 9s to know I would get those points later -- but then would always have a 2 or 3 or 4 to usually win the big numbers in the middle. A lovely, fun game that should get MUCH more recognition.

This was a big FLGS bargain and that's the only reason I bought it. I am indeed the king of the RK "little game" fanboys but this has dreadful reviews and ratings and the more I read the rules, the more lame this game looked. But I still wanted to of course give it a shot.

What a nice, cute surprise. The relative mindlessness of this game is made up for the fact that it has fun, garishly colored cards and the fun cats and doggies to grab for your points. The MAJOR factor that made me decide though " you know, this is actually a neat little game for what it is " -- is it's lightning pace. Once everyone gets what the cards do, people could play this game in five minutes or less !! Thrilled to have another proven fun game to add to my " easy to play with non gamer people" games !!!

Took forever to get this to the table because the rule book is not super wonky--but it's one of those books where the rule writers use 20 sentences when you could easily communicate the info in 5 words.

A wonderful little game it turns out to be-- elements of Ra added to set collecting and area management. Juan as stated below handily beats us by A-M and I getting too excited to get sets in our cellar pyramid as fast as possible instead of waiting to see if those cards would be NEEDED later for late auction bidding. Again, I am not sure if there is a flaw/wrong rule here about the runaway leader issue and/or if it's true a card can only exist in your pyramid as part of ONE set or if it may be used twice to count. Excited to play again, love the wine bottles marking start player and end of auction !!

It's certainly always fun when you get something to the table you know you will dig--- it's perhaps an even more special fun when you concur to play a game you KNOW is not your cup of tea genre wise -- and you end up having a blast !!

" Adventures" " Crawling around looking for treasure" " Character Minis" et al-- these are usually examples for ME for that Geek List that says to the effect of ( I will restate that list's title a la a Family Feud question) "Name a game word description that sends you running away from the room screaming." (( It was JULY and I am STILL traumatized by the kill-me-now-please-oh-please-kill-me-now 17 1/2 hour fiddly nightmare horror of Fortune and Glory.)

But whaddya know? The bits are awesome, the secret info mechanics and the dice roll mechanics were incredibly fun, and I almost won !!

I had excellent dice luck gets lots of treasures and getting out of the board almost-- until the end. Huge pile of treasures and my dice rolling luck leaves completely as the boulder approaches me with only 2 spots left for me to escape. I can't believe I'd ever say this about a game of this ilk but I will look forward to playing again AND playing the other game in this pairing with the chasing mummies !!

Juan wins-- only person to get out alive. Kel killed by boulder, A-M killed first character by trap and too far behind by then to make up any time.

Exemplifying that my RK " little game" fanboyism is not blind. I don't know about this game, though I def want to play it more.

For as many times as I read the rules before finally getting it to the table-- I totally did the math wrong in terms of card amounts. I delusionally thought, well what a cool little idea, I reckon we will just be melding quartets up a storm. NO. NO. NO. NO. The agonizing decision making of what cards to bid and throw away and what to keep to try to make quartets are INCREDIBLY tight and tense. Still, being a musician, the artwork of the jazz kitty cats is delightful and the game moves very quickly. ( The whole wonky bidding system is a tad hard to get one's mind around it seems, however. ) I finally gave up on collecting what I needed and decided to use the jokers up all of the place, hoping someone would do the same and pass me in the joker total. They didn't and my would-have-won score was destroyed by the too many jokers penalty giving A-M the win.

My 2nd super surprise of the day's splendid gaming was this !!

Tile laying to area management is SO SO Not my mechanic. While I can enjoy these kinds of games-- It's a good thing I am a musician and a writer for my living-- I would make the world's most atrocious architect or civil engineer. Honestly, a special needs baby lemming could destroy me at Alahambra or Carcassone.

But whaddya know? I got the two high point get the tree charcters ( but don't get too many trees!!) -- I actually GOT the tile laying much better than I usually do in these games-- and even with the volcano penalty.. I shockingly pull out the win !! I think I might need to add this to my collection because it's simple enough to teach to non gamers and I actually may have found my first game of this ilk that doesn't just confound me. ( Also really love the active player deciding who gets what mechanic, very clever.)

Since it was so disastrous ALL day long-- WHY did I think once again using the " Get everything big as fast as possible" strategy would work THIS time? I had the 30 , the 28, and the 27 from big bids to get them-- how could it matter so much that I also had the 1 and 3 and 4? Especially after I got the two 15 millions? Well, too bad Kel, it DID matter .. and this strategy epically failed yet AGAIN as Ana-Maria swept the floor with us and all my strategy could manage was a barely respectable 3rd.
