I should point out right away that I'm not a native speaker, so my selection might raise a few eyebrows among native speakers. See it as a show of love — subject to whim, and possibly a tad quaint — for the English language and its many strengths and weaknesses, varieties and oddities. Obviously, additions to the list are most welcome.

It's extraordinary that you can appear learned, knowledgeable, and sophisticated by simply using a single word.

"It's a pity that they haven't been able to figure out why the predicted mass of the quantum vacuum has little effect on the expansion of the universe."

"Indeed." (="I have no bloody idea what you're talking about.")

I think this word has the coolest ring in the whole English language, and it can make anything sound cool, be it a board game, a music group, a starfighter, a car, a gun, or what have you. I've always wondered why this word is so rarely used by native speakers.

quite

This has to be one of the most versatile words in the English language. (Yes, I know that "f**k" is the most versatile one.) As a non-native speaker, I can't help finding the many subtle nuances this word carries fascinating. Just have a look at these examples:

"Is it a good game?"
"Quite!"

"Is it a good game?"
"Well, quite."

"Is it a good game?"
"Not quite."

"Is the game like Pandemic?"
"Quite."

"Is the game like Pandemic?"
"Not quite."

"Is it a good game?"
"It's quite good."

"Is it a good game?"
"It's quite a good game."

Also, it's difficult to dislike the profoundly British ring of, "Quite right!"

You'll have to pardon my French here. I know that this exclamation isn't as common in the UK as one might think as a foreigner — especially not as common as in V for Vendetta — but it sounds refreshingly brisk when the out-and-out Bri'ish exclaim, "Bollocks!"

It's fascinating that such a mild curseword can carry such oomph. In fact, "f**k" sounds quite feeble next to "bloody". It takes a Brit — or an Aussie, for that matter — to use this word convincingly, but I don't care. I will continue to say and write "bloody marvelous", "bloody awful", "bloody good idea", "not bloody likely", and "I'm bloody serious", simply because it sounds so bloody charming.

Or, in other words, "sesquipedalian" means "I think I'm smarter than you."

Well, I'm cheating a little bit, because it is not only English, works in any language. But I've met a person once, who could answer with this phrase to any question (and also justify his answer). Actually for others it got a little bit annoying, especially because he was the lector in IT training course.

I tend to use it to mean the latter.

In Language school for Russian, our instructor told us of his encounter with an American in Leningrad as a youth.

The American used a single word unfamiliar to my instructor. He was unable to find it in any reference work and for years it puzzled him until he emigrated to the US in the 80's.

As he learned almost immediately on arrival, the single "word" eluding him was actually the phrase "all of us." Which of course in English is run together and sounds like a single word pronounced "olive-us."

I learned this one when I spent a semester abroad in York. It's a fantastic catch-all sort of phrase. Depending on use it means hello, goodbye, thank you and probably all sorts of other intermediaries. After the semester, I took to signing all my e-mails "Cheers!" and I continue it to this very day.

Cheers!

As American 'English' becomes more widespread my love of this word increases. The far inferior 'ass' fails to satisfy on so many levels, and it is a tragic thing when ass fails to satisfy, or so I've been told.

Authority figure: "Thou shalt do some things and shalt refrain from some other things, so sayest me!"

Peoples poet: "Arse!"

Authority figure, tarred, feathered and humbled is thrown out of town, "If only they had said 'ass' I could have had them!"
