I'm not posting this Geeklist to toot my own horn or to draw attention to myself. The reason is so that perhaps someone might see it and say "hey, that's an idea!"

My son started 6th grade this year...first year in middle school. And one of the benefits of middle school is that there is more diversity, especially in after school activities. He immediately zeroed in on the "Fantasy and Board Gamers Club" that meets after school, asked for the $10 to sign up for it, and signed up. It was a natural fit for him, he loves games, his friends were signing up, bingo.

Schools don't get a ton of money for extra stuff. I'm lucky, we live in a good part of the state, the school district is top notch, but there's only so much money and everything costs more nowadays. When my son signed up for the club, I contacted the teacher in charge of it and offered up my services. After some emails back and forth, I realized that the game collection that he oversaw was in dire need of upgrading. And that's when the lightbulb went off.

I own (actually now, owned) 100+ boardgames. I looked at the shelves and realized that so many of those games weren't getting played. It was a collection, not a hobby. So, I grabbed some totes and started loading them up. I showed up that Wednesday afternoon and gave the games to the club. Didn't loan, didn't say "take care of these, I want them back", I gave them willingly. And the kids smiled, and the teacher thanked me, and we went through the games. This list is of the games that I gave, their reactions thus far, and my thoughts.

A lot of us are blessed to have awesome collections of games. And I'm not going to sit here and denounce that or say that having 100's if not 1,000's of games is wrong. But the hobby of ours will only survive and flourish if there are a younger generation to come after us. If there's a school group, or club, or monthly gaming get together near you, and you see some games on your shelf that you can live without, just think about perhaps donating those games.

For me, games are made to be played. I knew that if I wasn't going to be able to, I wanted someone to play with them. And if they're kids, all the better!

And as I continue to plow through the collection, I'm finding more and more to donate! The teacher's gonna need a bigger storage closet! LOL

I love this game. A great set collection game. And the bits are top notch. One of the librarians actually knew of this game and was as excited as the kids to have it in the collection. It's been played at the club and I spoke with the kids afterwards. It got a big thumbs up from all of them.

Wanted to give them an abstract to play with. Once you get past the clever scoring, the game comes naturally. Again, bright bits, simple gameplay....this one hasn't hit the table yet (I showed them) but I'm hoping next week!

I honestly don't think I ever even unpacked this one. Another great gateway game, really nice bits, gotta give it to Days of Wonder. I played this one a couple of times and it never really "wowed" me. The kids who saw the bits....well, you don't get those bits in a Monopoly game, now do you?

The kids really seem to dig the fantasy theme, so this one is now in their collection. Was a fun game, but nothing that I would ever get to the table myself.

They really dug this one. They loved Lords of Waterdeep (the teacher owned that one) and seem to dig the whole worker placement thing. Several groups have played this one. The "baby making hut" always is a big hit. The best part is showing them a strategy and seeing them take off with it!

A simple two-player war game. Great bits. Simple gameplay. Lots of dice rolling. And it plays in less than an hour! What can be better!!!

Besides....Boys + mini tanks = GOOD TIMES!

Again, nice bits and the kids really like that. It's "roll and move" but it really isn't. The concept is easy, and kids seem to always want to move the horses that they bet on to win, even when that's not the optimal move.
