Everyone else is doing it, so why can't I?

Over my 6 years in the hobby I've rated nearly 550 games and logged over 3000 plays. These are my favourites so far. I excluded anything I've played fewer than 5 times, and only a handful that I've played fewer than 10 times made it. I tried to get it down to 50, but I failed

The first 50 are in alphabetical order and the top 10 countdown is on page 3.

A fitting first entry for this list as it anticipated so many of the things I enjoy in more modern games. Simple rules from which complex interactions emerge; manageable randomness; a strong spatial element; pieces that aren't owned by the players. Sackson nailed it more than 50 years ago.

(including the expansion)

The only worker placement game on this list. If I'm going to spend a game building my own little world, I need it to be quick and varied or I get bored. ACBAS delivers everything I liked about the original game in a stripped-down half-hour package.

It's no great secret that Knizia is my favourite designer. He's the prime exponent of the Sackson design principles that I described above and I've played over 50 of his games and enjoyed almost all of them.

Battle Line is a classic example of his 'less is more' approach. Six suits of 10 numbers produce an amazing amount of tension, with or without the tactics cards.

Last one for now I promise

This isn't a very Knizian design really, with all its special powers and combos. But hey, I like special powers and combos! I've managed to pick up all but one of the decks, but haven't played with most of them yet. Even the base set is varied enough for quite a few plays, and I doubt I'll ever get to the deckbuilding. I hope the FFG big box treatment sparks the same renaissance it did for Netrunner.

Condottiere is barely a board game - the board's just there to give the scoring an extra dimension. That's fine by me; if I had to choose what I'd play for the rest of my life, I'm pretty sure I'd pick card games over board games. The escalating all-pay battles here anticipate Knizia's Taj Mahal and Beowulf. The diplomacy can fall flat with the wrong crowd, but with a table of sharks it's a delight. Plays well with six too, which is always a bonus.

Version note: I prefer the simpler card powers of the original Eurogames edition to the Fantasy Flight version. The large tarot-style cards are beautiful too.

There are a few games in this list that have earned their place not so much because I've enjoyed playing them but because they intrigue and occasionally frustrate me. Container is the purest economic game I know and I love the freedom that it allows the players. I don't tend to be very good at these games that are all about manipulating player incentives, but that just makes me want to play them more.

I'd not thought about it before, but writing this just after Condottiere I realise there are quite a few similarities. It's another card game in board game's trappings, it's full of bluff and politicking, and it's highly dependent on the right players to make it sing.

If Acquire is the forefather of the elegant Euro, Cosmic does the same for combo-building rule-bending card games, several of which will feature here.

This seemed to come out of nowhere at Essen last year, but now it looks like part of a wider movement of games with few rules or components and a focus on social interaction. I heartily approve. I've never quite figured out how to play Coup well but it's hard to say no to another hand.

I've been reading the Discworld novels devotedly for the last 20 years. When I heard Martin Wallace would be designing this game, it sounded like a perfect fit. Wallace's games are a bit hit and miss for me, but I'd nominate him as the best designer for combining clever mechanisms with a real theme. Ankh-Morpork is a blast - and anyone who criticises it for being chaotic is really missing the point of the source material.

As for the Vimes 'problem', I'm pretty sure it's one of those situations where the designer has left the balance to the players instead of doing it for them. And I like that.

I'm a big fan of games that use information as a core mechanism. Divinare does it well enough to be worthy of Knizia. I've compared it to Liar's Dice, but it also has an echo of Loco and probably even more of Members Only which I haven't yet had the chance to play.

I love Chudyk's designs because they eschew balance and incremental engine-building in favour of crazy swings and improvisation. For that reason I find the lurid colours and cartoon art of the original a much more fitting aesthetic for the game than the refined Black Box.

There's been a great crop of bluffing games recently but this might just be the best of them. The purity of the original game is great, but I think the additions in the Royal version are worthwhile - especially the raised stakes of the penalty pile.

I wasn't expecting anything from this, having burnt out on Dominion, so it was a big surprise to find it becoming one of my favourite games. I've written a monster review and appeared on the Long View podcast explaining why in great detail. The key is the way it takes a nice simple family-game core and then bolts on huge variability and expandability through the bonus tiles and scoring cards. I haven't tried Crossroads yet, but I'm a little disappointed that it tampers with the core rather than just giving us more tiles and cards.

Man, this is a weird and subtle little thing. Only eight actions per player over the whole game and the longer you can get away without using them the better. I have glimpses of clarity and then I get confused again. I'd love to really get into this with the same group and try the 2v2 partnerships version. Fascinating and unique.

File with Coup and Love Letter in the new wave of social microgames, with an added dash of Faidutti chaos. It's more of a party game than Coup, especially with 8+ players, and having players not knowing their own card is a stroke of genius.

Taking the fixed-value bidding of Ra and putting it on a map was a brilliant idea, and Pauchon had the good sense to let it stand for itself and not throw the kitchen sink in too. I adore this as a 2-player game; it's so satisfying to find the perfect spot to start an auction that gives your opponent only bad options.
