Two of my favourite games of the last couple of years, Kingdom Builder and The Palaces of Carrara, share a mechanism. Both start with a random selection of scoring cards being drawn from a deck and placed for everyone to see. A significant chunk of the points scored in the game come from these, leading to games which play quite differently each time. I wondered which other games share this mechanism.

What I'm not looking for:

- games like Dominion with a random setup but not of scoring objectives

- games like Metropolys with secret scoring objectives for each player

Three scoring cards are selected from a deck of 10. Apart from Castles, all the points scored in the game come from these.

One card is selected from each of four decks. These define the end-game objectives and ways of scoring points.

Does this one count? There are several known significant end game point tiles that are drawn randomly from the supply before the start of a game. This is both for a public display and each person also gets a secret one. There are also quite a few other ways to score points, but these end game point tiles are often 20-30 points each.

Does this count? The history card is only for each round, rather than the whole game.

Not sure how much I love this mechanic. It works brilliantly in Kingdom Builder because it is the game, whereas in Palaces there's so much already going on, it tips the cognitive load needle into the red for me.
At least at the moment.

I fully intend to keep playing Palaces until I've beaten you Martin!

Each player gas a scoring card, but the cards affect all players.
Though the cards are hidden not open, there are few enough that they should be memorised and trying to work out which ones are in the game is part of the fun, so I think that just about counts...

Again, this is a 'sort of'. The scoring tiles only affect the player who owns them, but they're mostly won during the game, so they're open to everyone to try and get... perhaps that's too tenuous a link to your criteria - call it a related mechanic.

This euro from 1998 has 6 different colors of treasures which you collect during the game. At the end, you get money from the treasure which is determined by 6 price charts which were randomly chosen from a set of 16 price chart tiles. They're chosen and displayed at the start of the game.

(There's an additional nifty twist that the value of a color at game end depends also on how many of that color were sold during play instead of held for final scoring. Each price table has a list of prices, and during play treasures can be sold for immediate profit, and the sold treasure covers up the next number on the table, so one must plan ahead and try to predict what the final price will be.)

This one has 6 tiles selected that will score significant points if you meet their conditions. In this one, you also potentially score extra points if you are the first person and others then later also score that same tile. There is some variance in the tiles (I think 2 of 5-6 tiles for each of the three levels of difficulty are randomly drawn).

Each round's scoring objectives are laid out at the beginning (6 drawn from a set of 8). The order of the objectives also influences the arc of the game significantly.

Also, a number of Bonus cards are available each game, some of which score points for certain types of buildings. Their presence or absence can influence strategy.

The basic rules of this trick taking game have a very simple scoring mechanism: Each player gets 1 point per trick taken. However, before each round, every player chooses a special card that changes the rules of the game and a third of these rule changes affect the scoring system.

Not too sure if this one counts, but beginning with the first expansion, there are special objectives that are randomly determined before each game and that influence the overall scoring quite drastically.

Torres' Master Variant of the game also includes additional scoring opportunities (that occur either once at the end of the game or once every scoring, depending on the card).
While these additional scoring objectives don't make or break your score, they are usually significant enough to seriously consider working towards (or at least keeping in mind).

There are different victory condition cards which lists the objectives to win the game. Each card usually has 6 objectives, but they differ in the amount of things that must be collected (e.g. 40 denarii or 30 denarii) and in the number of objectives that must be achieved (e.g. three out of six or four out of six) for the win. This allow to vary the length of the game according to the number of players included. If several players reach the required number of the objectives, points are calculated and used as a tiebreaker.

Now the rules actually say "Choose or randomly select a victory condition card", so they are not necessarily drawn randomly. In fact in all our games we chose the card. Moreover, each player has their own (identical) victory condition card contrary to the single card placed at the centre for everyone to see and this card doesn't change the game too much. Finally, the algorithm to calculate points for tiebreaking doesn't vary from game to game. So as you can see, this game does not exactly have "Kingdom builder thing", but I believe it is close enough to be included in the list. And the most important thing is that this game is really great

There is one scoring card that is selected at the beginning of the game, which is visible to every player. A different scoring card is selected every game. There is also different set of scoring cards, one given to each player, which are kept in secret. These cards also have different end-of-game conditions! All players score from these cards at the end of the game.

Not sure if it counts because of the twist with the secret objectives...

Keyflower has secret objectives, but in the last round of bidding, the objective tiles come out and everyone has a chance to claim the tiles for themselves. So an objective that player A was working on for the whole game can be bid on and "stolen" by player B. (And then only player B will benefit.)

I believe this fits: it has 9 different possible modules saying how players get victory points, and only one is used in a game, determined during setup.

I just remembered as I posted this on another list (underrated games from 2016) that each round has an objective that all players try to achieve. There are three rounds, so you hope the round one bonus builds into the bonus of the following rounds. Points are awarded for who achieved it best, then second and third best. Here are 8 of the 9 randomly-selected tiles:
