There are a lot of reviews of boardgames on this site, both in written and video format and those reviews are absolutely fantastic for providing us with an overview on what the game is about, the gist of how it plays, and how pretty the components are! They also are a great tool for getting us to spend some, err, too much err, just the right amount of our money on those games! However, once you have that new shiny, now you have to learn to play it. Sometimes, that's easy as can be and other times, notsomuch. That's where this series picks up: My aim is to sit across the table from you and teach you how to play that game that you have been wanting to learn (or just picked up). Maybe you hate reading rulebooks? Or maybe there are some difficult rules/spots that it helps having someone explain to you and there isn't anyone around to show you? Well, hopefully I can be that someone!

I plan on focusing on some of the heavier games (some named Sven, others, well, not named Sven) that folks might benefit from having someone teach them the game. Games like Dominant Species, Vinhos, Through the Ages: A Story of Civilization, GMT COIN Series, The Campaign for North Africa (ok, just kidding on the last one) are the ones that I'm talking about.

So, who am I, you may ask? My name is Edward, I'm 38 years old and have been in the hobby a long, long, number of weeks. At least 60 of them laugh(as of the start of this series) My wife and I aren't the most avid outdoors people (even though we live in Colorado), so last year, we wanted to find a hobby that we could do together during the cold months here. We both enjoyed board games growing up, and thought that maybe that would be fun to kill some time til the spring. Well....

We re-discovered BGG in September of 2012 and it's been pretty much non-stop gaming since then. We went from 6 games in our 'collection' *snicker* to what it is now, right around 500. We both enjoy heavier games and I am a wargamer at heart (USMC '93-'01). Everything from Euros, to AT, to wargames; card games to 18XX's, we enjoy a wide variety. So while I'm far from being a very experienced boardgamer, I think that I'll have a pretty good grasp on the games that I feature in this series.

A caveat to add here about this adventure: I've never filmed before, I have no editing experience, and I'll be learning as I go. What I do have, though, is a cup brimming with excitement for the games I'll be featuring as well as a zeal for teaching. Feedback & suggestions are going to only help me get better, so I would greatly appreciate hearing what y'all think!

So, have a seat, enjoy a beverage (adult or otherwise) and let's learn us a new game!

A few notes here: In the intro, that is our greyhound: Asher. You'll hear him pitter-patting around the house a couple of times...sorry about that).

This is my first ever video and first ever attempt at editing a video. Suggestions and corrective criticism is welcomed & encouraged. I know I can get a bit long-winded at times, but I was nervous and that will go away with practice, I'm sure. I want to get better to 'give back' to the community.

I hope that you enjoy the video and that it helps you learn an awesome, awesome game!

Dominance vs Population

This is the most easily confusing part of the game, understanding the significant difference between Dominance (the cone) and Population (# of cubes/species on a tile). Hopefully, this makes it crystal clear to folks.
