For 2013, in an effort to increase depth over breadth, my gaming group decided to commit to 20 plays of one game. We love new games and we love to discover all the new hotnesses, but a few of us felt that we were jumping from game to game and never really getting below the surface on many of the games.

The experiment has been going well. With most of us hitting 15-16 games recently, we should all be jogging over the finish line soon. And the results have been exactly what we'd hoped for.

Now it's time to find a game for next year that will blossom on multiple playings, remain engaging over 20+ plays, and be another great experience in spelunking the depths of another game.

I am looking for suggestions on games that you feel are not only replayable, but new layers are revealed as you get deeper into it. So, please, post suggestions and reasons why you think it would be a good candidate for our 20-Game Challenge 2014.

The first 6 games below are the games currently in our conversation. We'd love to hear from you. Please add.

Brass was our 2013 game and it delivered. We picked it for it's "framework" style that would flow with us as we matured.

We started out discovering the major strategies, then spent the next few games exploiting them and trying to find ways for the seemingly weaker strategies to be more viable.

This has been a perfect candidate for a 20 game challenge. I don't think the game can be "solved" and even when everyone gets good at it, it still requires good tactical decisions and the ability to adapt to the uniquely organic experience with each game.

We tried a few games of Santiago in hopes it would be a good fit, but I'm not so sure.

I'm not sure the game will flower on multiple plays. I think it will continue to be fun (I really enjoy it), but I think 20 plays from now would just be the same kind of fun and not a new deeper experience.

This was a front runner for some of the players, but we played last night and I did not like it. I think I could come around, but I even won the game and didn't enjoy it much.

One thing that might be going for it is the multiple races. It is almost designed to give you 20 unique experiences.

Seems like a good choice. One of the players is a bit less than lukewarm to it and it can run a little long. Most of us agree we just plain want to play this more, but the group isn't totally excited for the 20 game commitment.

Chicago Express has entered the conversation.

I've played a few, but less than 10. I thought one of the other players already had a lot of plays, but it seems he feels there is room for him to explore.

One of the other gamers is largely anti train games. We've made him play Steam and 1846: The Race for the Midwest and even Rolling Freight (oops on that one, we all hated it). But they all leave him underwhelmed. Maybe a bunch of this game will get him on board for other train games (pun intended).

While it may seem like an odd choice given it's short playtime, this is a game where after almost 20 plays, I feel like I still haven't scratched the surface. Knowing the cards takes time but is critical to figuring out how to beat someone else's combination and how best to set up your own. This is a game that could easily withstand 100 plays.

Depending on how much time you're willing to invest and whether you're group is into multi-player war games that mascarade as euros (see T&E), this could be another great fit.

I had a weekly group that used to play 'Gric (another game that can handle deep exploration). One of the other guys and I wanted to transition it to DS but unfortunately it broke up before we were able to do that.

You mention wanting to have multiple copies of the game which probably makes Splotter unrealistic. However, any of their big 3 (Antiquity, Roads & Boats, and Indonesia) will withstand a lot more than 20 plays. At 15 plays of Antiquity, my gf has finally gotten the basics down and now needs some real competition (as I'm still struggling to learn how to be more efficient). And at almost 10 plays of R&B, I think I've gotten to the point where I can play it with some basic long term strategy.

I'm unsure of how the new version came out, but I own the original and this game is fantastic. It especially becomes good with experienced players, as there are several mods you can add which make the game's intelligence test go through the roof. (In a good way!)

This game is all about TIMING in order to score well :

1/ synchronizing yourself between the fields and the caravan (gathering the resources you need to buy what you want)

2/ observing the rythm of the temple (selecting or not the priest given the standing in the temple and who will do the procession)

3/ moving the caravan (straight away in order to gain a benefit before an opponent, later to prevent an opponent to benefit from your move)

There is a lot of INTERACTION into this game : it is not only to gain PP but also to deny some PP to your fellow opponents. The game allows screwage in a brillant and elegant fashion.

The resource management is very tight and you need to plan carefully because of your storage limit (2 or 4), the tight money (increasing recruitment costs), the tight camels (you always need at least 1 camel to move the caravan even if you have +2 or +4 caravanner). You will find yourself almost all the time in shortage of one money, one camel or one resource.

Court cards are not a goal : their are a means to help you on the road to victory.

This game is very well balanced but at first sight, it seems that some strategies are overpowered. It is not because this game rewards experience : grognards can lead edge strategies and win the game.

Awesome gaming experience !

There are so many good games listed that I can't think of a reason to not choose one of them! I think Dominant Species, Chicago Express, Innovation, Pax Porifiriana, and a couple others have all proven to have a ton of depth, as many of these games are heavily replayed by certain gamers.

Tough to choose a game that measures up to the ones mentioned above, but this one absolutely stands side by side (at least) with those. It plays best with 4 although downtime is increased and some say intolerable. For those, it plays best with 3. A game worth exploring at any player number, though!

Honorable mentions:
Caylus
Troyes
Puzzle Strike (3rd Ed)
Tammany Hall (this game has a lot of similarities to Chicago Express, in terms of temp alliances and player driven play)

*edit* Reasons I think TtA is infinitely replayable:
When I first played it, I felt the theme shining through. A Civ game? Hellz yes.
On further replays, the theme fell away as I was min-maxing what the game throws up for you. But I enjoyed it even more!
A true masterpiece, tackle it.

Another one chosen for fitting in the timeslot you desire---- But do not compare this to Brass. It's much more euroy than Brass in terms of searching for VPs rather than revenue streams.

But the reason it will play 20 times is because you should buy it with the expansion map. The expansion maps aren't simply different layouts for the same industries--- they use significantly different rules for industries(ships can sometimes be absent, sometimes be exporters of manufactured goods, exporters of iron/coal, or sometimes be importers of items, for instance). This leads to each expansion map having its own discovery process.

The only downside is that 3 players really need to play on Japan, so I've played the Japan map way too much. Also, if you expect it to be Brass 2.0 you'll be really really disappointed.

This is probably a terrible suggestion. It's a grail game, so it's super expensive. It's playing time is maybe pushing two hours. Despite being a grail game, the wooden resource-eeples are falling apart.

But I desperately want to play it 20 times.

It uses these things called guild halls which during the course of the game give you special powers. IIRC there are 14 or so, but only 7 appear in any given game. So it's a heavy economic market manipulation game with a tableu of available powers, and you have to choose which ones will synergize best with the random map setup every game. Such great replayability, such great depth, and so hard for me to get to the table for some reason.
