It's pretty easy, tell us about the most beautiful place you have ever been. If possible add a few photos so we can see why it made such an impression on you.

It should be fun, a lot of Geek Lists lead to people adding to their games wish list. I'm hoping this will make some additions to your travel wish list.

I have been lucky to visit a lot of very beautiful places, and it’s not been easy to just go with one place. But choose I must and so I am going to stay relatively close to home and go with The English Lake District. It doesn’t have the tallest mountains in the world, but there is something about the whole area that I find quite inspirational.

The poet William Wordsworth lived in the Lake District and he described it as ‘the loveliest spot that man hath found’.

I have spent a lot of time in the Lake District and love the whole area. Here are some photos I have taken there.

This is my favourite view in the Lake District and I am not alone. A TV program in the UK a few years ago asked viewers to vote on their favourite view in the UK, and this view was the one that got the most votes.

It's a view of Great Gable with Wastwater in front of it. I could sit in this spot all day.

This is me (On the right in the blue top) at The Ashness Bridge. A famous beauty spot in the area.

This might not be particularly beautiful but I think it's a pretty amazing photo. We were walking on a mountain when we saw this coming towards us. It's rain coming towards us, but you can actually see where it starts and ends. Being on a mountain there was no cover for us, we got soaked.

This is a fell called Haystacks (You should be able to work out why ). It's a fell rather than a mountain as it's under 2,000 feet so it does not qualify as a mountain. It's only a few feet under, but rules are rules. The view is seen from across Butermere.

This one is not actually one of my photos. I thought I had to finish with a photo of Striding Edge. Yes people travel along this ridge, in fact in Summer it could almost do with traffic lights it gets so crowded.
It's one of the most popular routes up (and down) Helvellyn.

I've also had the good fortune visit some very interesting and beautiful places and would be have to put Cambodia as my entry on this (very interesting) list.

The Khmer architecture of the temples is breathtaking, the jungles are awe-inspiring and I found that the people were wonderfully friendly and engaging - far more than one might expect for a country that has gone through some very dark times in relatively recent years. There were many victims/survivors of the civil war in evidence, and even now straying from the paths in the jungle is not something to be undertaken without extreme caution - and best avoided.

Angkor Wat, from the air. A massive temple complex, and the largest religious building in the world, built in the 12th century. The lakes are not purely decorative, but at the height of the Khmer period were used for irrigation, trade and transport (via canals).

Workers in the rice paddies

Inside Ta Prohm, one of the Bayon temples at Angkor. (And yes, the one used as a location in one of the Tomb Raider films.)

Christmas in Cambodia. Not beautiful, but it caught my eye.

Again, not beautiful, but certainly memorable. Leaving Cambodia was... interesting. I spent most of New Year's Day stuck on a partially collapsed bridge while it was repaired. Some of the locals tried, with varying degrees of success, in finding alternative routes.

My partner and I visited Japan last year. We went in November and everyone warned us that we probably wouldn't get to see Mount Fuji because of the low cloud cover at that time of year. One morning we went for a walk from where we staying in Hakone and as we reached the top of the hill we were climbing we were greeted with this vista:

Needless to say, we took a lot of pictures from the top of this hill!

Out of all the places I've been lucky to visit Japan left me with the most profound memories: a beautiful country, lovely people, superb food, and a rail network to die for that makes travelling around so easy.

THIS

is the best place I´ve ever been in my whole life up to now!

It is 5 o´clock in the morning, you hear the hippos grunting somewhere around your tent.... you know it will be a breathtaking day, just sitting at the waterhole and waiting for the animals to arrive....

Of course I have stunning pictures of animals..... but I wanted to get accross the emotion that I had when I sat on my veranda looking at the moon at 5 in the morning....... it was absolutely quiet, except for the hippos....

You know.... actually I hate flying in planes, or better - they scare me.
In this old DC3 from 1942 I felt as safe as in Abraham´s Bosom!!
With this we were flying all across South Africa, Namibia, Botswana and Zambia and in this plane I felt at home (of course it was equipped with all convenience one could think of, including a superb old Whisky right after the take-off..... )

Everywhere that I traveled in Dublin and area was gorgeous, but one day I hopped a train and went on the cliff walk, north of Dublin, at a town called Howth.
It was breath-takingly beautiful; my pictures didn't do it justice.
This is my favorite of them, though:

The next year was a family trip and we were in Italy. So many nice things to see. The Amalfi coast was probably even nicer than the famed "Cinque Terre", but I got better pictures from that coast. This is Vernazza:

For me it would be the Easter Sierra Nevada Mountains here in California. I know it's a big range, but i've camped, fished, hiked a lot of it.
Being in IT and on computers all day (and sometimes night) I still look forward to the weeks we get in the mountains and I can get back to the basics of camping and fishing.

It also helps that I have decades of fond memories here. I have been coming here since I was a kid, have brought my kids here, and expect to teach my grand kids how to fish here.

I went on a trip through China and went through the painful 10 hour bus ride (which isn't fun when you have long legs) from Chengdu to Jiu Zhai Gou, easily the most beautiful place I've seen in my life. It is a natural reserve in central China, a bit up in the mountains and surrounded by small Buddhist villages. The reserve itself is located between mountains and is full of forests and lakes:

[i[Mirror Lake[/i]

The reserve is Y-shaped and you can either take the bus back and forth, which stops at pretty much every lake, or you can take the bus to the end and walk back. The walking paths are great, as they stay away from the road. We barely met any people while walking two full days through the reserve.

Note that the trees in the little river are underwater.

However, the best part of the park is the amazingly clear blue water, which is simply the most amazing sight I have ever seen.

Here also, the trees in the lake are all underwater. There are several lakes like this, coloured blue by the minerals that are in the water (I think), but also many other lakes and forests too see. I only have a few of my pictures here atm (at work), but just search for 'Jiuzhaigou' images and you'll see there's plenty more to see than what I just showed here.

It's tough to get there (either 10 hour bus or a pretty expensive flight), but it's absolutely worth it!

Here is the villa we rented, very secluded on a dirt road, but still within walking distance of the beach below. We had to rent a 4WD vehicle to get there.

Here is a view of the surrounding sea and islands from our villa's patio.

First place has to be the Amalfi Coast in Italy (south of Naples). Pictures don't begin to do it justice. Small cities carved out of a mountainside that drops right into the ocean - I went on my honeymoon and have been pining to go back ever since.

A fairly close second would be northern South Africa. It's just a beautiful expanse of land.
