Let's say that a group of historians are going to bury a time capsule that will be uncovered in two hundred years. Supposing that there is only room in the capsule for one game, no matter what size it is (just go with it), and supposing that the cardboard and paper doesn't deteriorate over time, what board game would you choose to represent your vision of the hobby? Don't worry about complexity or how approachable the game is.

The hypothetical time capsule is just a way for me to frame the question: "What game represents your vision of the hobby?" You can include any game, it doesn't have to have been made in the last decade or anything.

Edit: Since this is more about finding a representative game, I'll allow game systems, meaning base game + expansions.

This is a tough one between El Grande and Imperial. I'm going with El Grande because it gives me almost everything I look for in a game. I like to describe it as a five way knife fight in an elevator because almost every move you make threatens someone's space and you are forced to beat up on the other players to stay alive.

It has a tense bidding for turn order during which the players have to weigh resource income over the importance of the special abilities. The game has a roller coaster feel as your position on the board improves and degrades leading up to the scoring turns and your goal is to hop onto the wave at the right time.

It is all topped off with the Castillo in which people can drop cubes but the total number of cubes in the Castillo is secret until the scoring rounds.

For me it always goes, "Did I drop five or six cubes in there? I'm pretty sure I dropped six. That should put me ahead of everyone... WHAT?! I only put four in there?". Not only do you get points for the Castillo like any other location, but then they get airdropped into any location that you pick secretly, adding a layer of double-think to the game.

The only thing the game lacks is a coherent theme.

Okay, obviously this is a joke!!! Who in their right mind would put Catapult in anything other than a blast furnace.

In actuality I would probably include 7 Wonders, Dominion, or Pandemic.
It's hard to really choose because they are 3 VERY different games.

I suppose if a gun is put to my head I would have to pick 7 Wonders.
For me, 7 Wonders is a much more diverse game with far fewer components and its really easy to learn, but hard to master.

I'm assuming I couldn't include all Dominion expansions, but I'm pretty sure I could fit Cities, Leaders, and the Wonder Pack in the 7 Wonders box. And Pandemic is an amazing game, but the Alpha Dog syndrome can be a bummer and there's a fair amount of luck involved in the game.

Give me 7 Wonders!

Heroscape Master Set: Rise of the Valkyrie with all of its expansions is my vote! Endlessly replayable, this game has it all (at least all the things I like in a game); cool minis, lots of dice, modular board, infinite combinations, luck, strategy, top-notch components, theme...it's the physical embodiment of 'awesome'!

I think this game symbolizes all the good things about modern boardgaming: addictive, competitive, easy to learn, good looking, can be played by beginners and also serious gamers.
Let's put it in my time capsule. Although not quite sure, if after 200 years they will know, what wheat is used for and why to trade one useless thing (wood) for another (wood).

Been around for thousands of years. It should be around for a thousand more. You can spend a lifetime playing this game and keep learning something new while playing it.
