The first games we play with people that are important in our lives hold special memories. It might actually be enough for you never to sell or trade a game.

So what's the first one you played with your significant other?
It counts even if they weren't your significant other at the time...

and I were just coworkers. She knew of my love of boardgames, and I knew that she hated them with a passion. In one of our watercooler conversations, she told me that she'd been traumatized by endless sessions of Risk, Monopoly and Pay Day as a girl. So I replied that she just hadn't played "good" games. Now this doesn't work with everyone, but I caught a little twinkle in Suzie's eye and I knew I could give it a shot.

So I started her slow. I convinced her to give Elk Fest a shot (ha!) over lunch. She actually enjoyed it, but suggested something along the lines of "Well, it's a special (i.e. dexterity) game, nothing like what I've played before."
So we moved on to some other light fare, including Carcassonne and Ticket to Ride... and now not only are we living together, but some of her favorite games now include C&C Ancients, Agricola and Trajan.

We hardly ever play Elk Fest anymore, but I'll never get rid of it. It was the start of too many wonderful things.

Does Magic: The Gathering count? I'd been am avid player for years and when I meet my girlfriend I was deep in the Zendikar block. I thought her to play and later gave her a box of cards and she has built some of the most amazing and unique decks I have ever seen.

Brought as a second-date surprise, possibly in response to some flirty texting about how she could play Scrabble on her phone, and I couldn't. We played over drinks at a bar after we went mini-golfing.

I'm lucky we're now engaged, given that I won it something like 340-210 with two bingos (well, OK, I'm lucky regardless of the score).

Little did she know that within six months, she'd be introduced to modern games - starting with Power Grid, no less!

Survive: Escape from Atlantis! was the first game my fiancee and I played together. She was really interested in board games but hated the standard, boring fare like Monopoly, Risk, etc. She was curious when I told her that better games were out there and re-introduced her to board games with this since it was pretty light. Admittedly not a very good 2-player game but it was enough to get her interested again, quickly moving into far more complex games. It's still one that we enjoy playing with friends and our parents from time-to-time. Our collection has grown considerably since then.

Fast forward to last year. I had been on hiatus from board games for a loooong time, and had just gotten back to the hobby. Betty and I are still together, and the first game I played with her upon re-entering was Small World.

1977: Backgammon was all the rage on and off college campuses. Whether in a dorm, at the student union building, or at off-campus parties, one could usually find a backgammon set and get up a game.

I met my future wife then at Virginia Tech, and though we have played over one hundred different games together over the years, I'm pretty certain backgammon was the first one. I'm pretty sure she gave me a backgammon set as a birthday gift that year, too -- and I still have it (actually, it looks identical to the one in the BGG image).

Diplomacy in 1979 was almost the last game we ever played together, but that's another story.

We spent a lot of time before we were married and during a first few years of marriage playing cribbage. It was just a fun way to sit around, chat about the day and maybe even have a beer.

Well, since I really can't list strip poker...I will have to go with this as our first official game.

My wife and I both had played it in our childhoods, so it was a nice blast from the past. I eneded up getting a working copy off ebay, and the first night we watched a movie and took turns operating. She had so much fun.

I still can't get her to play anything like Warhammer...but at least I know we can play doctor together....

.....after a quick game of strip poker.

Boardgame, you mean? whistle

I had been buying my Fantasy/ Sci-Fi books from a store that also sold Dungeon's & Dragons stuff along with a large boardgame section.
One day I wandered out of the book section into the games, and spotted Eurorails. I recall seeing two people playing it (or, more likely, one similar to it), on a British television programme, and I decided to take the plunge.

It remains a family favorite.

When I took my now wife on our first date, I had no job and less than $20 to my name, living with mom and dad. I planned out a date that we had a Taco Bell picnic in the park and then played The Game of Life. This was back in the day when I thought board games were nothing more than Monopoly and Life. (Oh how much I have grown!). I don't remember who won, but we learned a lot about each other playing, like both our favorite colors were orange, I was nice and let you drive the orange car!

Games have been a big part of our relationship ever since!

My wife-to-be invited me to her parents' house for "game night." I still remember how uncomfortable I felt, but they said they would teach me "the dice game" and we had a lot of fun. They didn't have a boxed set, just a set of dice and some paper for scoring. I had a lot of fun as the night went on and I started to relax around her parents. Now game nights are part of our regular get-togethers with her family.

In the early years of our marriage, I worked days and she worked evenings. When she'd get home at midnight, I'd have a RoboRally game all set up and we'd sit on the floor and play until 2 or 3AM before we'd stumble off to bed. I'd sleep 3 hours or so, get up and go to work, then sleep in the evening while she was at work.

RoboRally doesn't get played much at our house these days, but I still count it as one of my favorite games, just because of the good memories it evokes of those early days.

We technically met playing Dungeons & Dragons one night in the college dorms, but Battlemasters was the first game we played alone together. From there it was Heroquest and Talisman (3rd edition) from my collection and Phase 10 and Rummikub from her collection. Despite our differences in game choice we've been happily married for 16 years and our game nights still occur pretty regularly, as long as the games don't have too many "doo-bobbers". She hates games with too many "doo-bobbers"; e.g. chits, tokens, more than 1 type of die, more than 1 stack of cards, etc.

Not entirely sure here, either.

Our first game order consisted of this, Lost Cities, YINSH, San Juan, and Hey! That's My Fish. But having visited family prior to our marriage, and such visits inevitably including gaming, there's a good chance we had played something else by then.

YINSH is--by the way--the only one of the above games in which Shenomad does not have a 60%+ victory share.

One of the favorites was bridge, my hubby created a bidding system for the two of us, lightly based on the blue club system. Bridge brought us together during college but when we left college and began playing more competitively it almost drove us apart.

We still play Bridge mostly online, we love it. I though have become more of a board game addict, while he tends to stick with the classics Bridge and Chess. We also played Magic together quite frequently. Perhaps, we should have studied more. whistle

But Nine Men's Morris is the first one I do remember playing - also surely the first one we played 2-player. She lost and she didn't talk to me for half an hour then.

So I'm pretty sure our first game together was when Ben introduced us to Sorry Sliders. We played a lot games that day, and she did really well learning them.

A few days after, I taught Mary and a couple of her friends Carcassonne and she found it very confusing, but stuck with it and has continued to enjoy gaming ever since.

We've been together for 20 years now and married for almost 10.

Way back in college, my wife and I had been friends for about a year before we started dating so it's impossible to know for sure what the first game we'd played together was, but if I had to guess it would be this one. Trivial Pursuit saw a lot of play back then, and usually it was in groups with other people from her dorm residence hall.

That's more than 10 years ago so I really can't remember much about any of the specific plays of it, with one exception. There was a category that everyone hated because the questions were almost always about books that none of us had ever read or movies we'd never heard of, so it was usually the one chosen for the final question when someone had the chance to win. On one particular play I found myself in that position and prepared for an unanswerable question. The card was drawn, and the question was about... The Simpsons.

As for the game itself, I don't recall who actually owned it. It's not currently in our collection, so if it did happen to be my wife's copy it's most likely stashed in a box somewhere in her parents' basement. If it is there, it's probably going to stay there for a long time and even if it does rejoin our collection someday it'll probably go unplayed. It was a good game for the time and place, but we've long since moved on to far better games.
