Analysis paralysis. We have all fallen victim to it from both sides. We all know how frustrating it is sitting there while someone takes forever trying to decide what to do next. We have also been that person taking forever; sweating over what to do next. I try to let this happen to me as little as possible but it still happens from time to time. Here are a few games that AP happens to me more than other games. Post others that AP happens to you on.

This is actually the game that made me think of this list. I think this game is really fun and very well made but I can get horrible AP from this game. Maybe it's from having too many options and I tend to want to do everything you can in a game or maybe I haven't figured out a good strategy yet. Either way this game probably makes me think on my turns longer than any other game.

My wife and I have played this a few times with each of us only playing as one species. This way doesn't really give me AP but we played with a full six people a few weeks ago at our local game group and that is when the AP really kicks in. With six people there is so much information on the board to take in it's hard to decide what to do next. Hopefully after a few more big plays under my belt I will figure this one out as well. I think my wife and I will play this one with multiple species next time.

I typically do not suffer AP, preferring to lose 2 quick games over winning one game in which I make my fellow gamers suffer through long downtimes. However, Spyrium has made me pause for thought quit often.

Fairly simple choice set, but every choice matters so much and may or may not play into your opponents hands. Brilliant little game IMO.

Probably because to do anything significant in the game it involves at least 3-4 actions. To make sure I can do them all, I feel I need to check what my opponent is going to do, and what I'm going to do in response and...

Of course, by the time I have a plan and I place my worker, my opponent does something unexpected, throws off my plan, and I need to start over. Argh!

Yes, I traded it away. It's one of the few games that actually stressed me out more than I actually enjoyed it

Choosing which game to play is, typically, the source of the worst of my A.P.

Me and many of the good folks at Bath Gaming Guild stand around awkwardly for some minutes, without anybody wanting to move beyond the 'suggestions' stage to make a final decision.

What a brain burner picking the game is!

The problem space in this one is just too open for me. It feels like everything you can do in the game is open from the first turn. There are just too many different building and options to make sense of them.

I enjoyed my play of this, but I don't think I'd ever want to own it.

I love the game, but it hurts my brain. zombie

Interestingly enough, of all the games we've owned over the years, this is the only one that my wife (who routinely beats me at games as complex as War of the Ring (First Edition)) would flat out refuse to play after our first game together.

Tied with 1812: The Invasion of Canada.

Every movement card counts, and you are always making sure your armies have good odds, don't get waylaid by Native Americans, or are setting up a good naval move / blocking an advance. Sure, the movement card might say "Move 3 Armies 1 Space," but as an army is 1 active player cube + an arbitrary number of allied cubes, there are lots of decisions to weigh on a board of 40+ areas... which aren't a hex grid, but are rather arbitrarily laid out. And that's not even counting discussing strategy with your teammate in 4P/5P!

Love both games, but they take 2-3 hours in the full scenario whenever I play them (maybe 1.5-2 hours in the Advanced scenarios).

This! Especially since you can place buildings almost *anywhere* at the start of the game, hoping that some of them will be included in formed districts. And then having your opponents plotting the same.

Not even mentioning random placement of canals to try and stymie your opponents' development of districts. Ugh!

But I still love it

This is a really great game; it's nicely put together; stylish retro artwork; simple premise; and easy to learn and play, it has however got AP built in: as you accumulate more ships (dice) you have more to do, but because your ships are dice you don't know what you've rolled until it's your turn meaning only limited planning ahead can occur during downtime.

I'm normally hurrying my mates up, but on this one I do get caught in the AP rutsnore

This one for me.
The game's not very hard, but resource management is extremely important in this one. And actually you almost have to plan everything already before turn starts - which buildings to incorporate, spoil or cooperate, how and when to use workers and so on. I never liked to be an AP guy in any game though. Always trying to play as quick as possible, even if it means not planning everything I wanted.

This is a weird case. On one hand you can plan very far ahead and so there is a lot of pressure to sit there and plan out several turns in advance, as you might imagine this can take a little bit of time. However, on the other hand once you've taken the time to plan out those moves there is usually little that will prevent you from doing them as you had intended so the rest of the turns speed up significantly until you have to reassess the future again.

This provides a similar feeling to Catan in regards to how clearly you can plot out your action tree without exploding your head, so with more plays the AP should eventually fade away.

This is the one. No dice. All analysis. Trying to time the arrival of 2 or 3 fleets of spaceships in warp drive so that they can arrive at more than one location so that the enemy doesn't know which star system to defend. Then trying to factor this in with the enemies doing the same. And add to this the fact that any and all battles are so critical since the bigger star fleet always completely destroys the weaker one without taking any losses.

I play quickly. The games group plays quickly. We have one chap who likes to pretend that he's thinking, but he still plays pretty quickly compared to some I know. We're quite lucky because we'll usually get through a couple of 'big' games in an evening and still have time for fillers, starters, silly dexterity games and bar snacks.

But when I popped this innocent-looking single-pack game from Adlung onto the table for a 'quick starter', it damn-near made my head explode. I just couldn't deal with it! Every turn I just stared at the cards with a gurning eye-popping expression and absolutely no concept of where best to place my next card. It's not that I wasn't clued up on the rules - I'd taught the game, gawdammit! I just couldn't for the life of me formulate a proper strategy, or even a single round of tactics. My table talk dried up completely and I was reduced to a gibbering monkey with a handful of cards. Everyone else enjoyed a laugh at my expense and then we moved on and played Agricola in less time.

I traded Pompeji shortly afterwards. Just couldn't handle the pressure.

I am generally inclined to not overthing stuff when playing (though I do on occasion).

This might sound silly compared to the brainburners on the list, but I constantly struggle to pick my next tile pick and placement on this game. For some reason, the repeating color patterns make it difficult for me to remember my decision tree, and I find myself constantly reevaluating. I might get lucky on a turn and have a clear placement (e.g an open spot for a primary color pick) but that is rarely the case when playing with others.

One that also amazed me on that end was Shogun. Picking up my actions order was painfully slow! I had a very hard time finishing my picks and the order they needed to go on. This one, however, I thing may improve with plays. Pastiche has not!

The last sector, especially the last round, causes me a lot of AP. I count my total fleet strength, then my ground strength, then the two different ways I could take the one core world I've been aiming for all game, then I gotta calculate my remaining fleet and ground strength and decide if that adds up to the second best planet, then I gotta make sure I still have the energy to use all of those units and if I want to save enough to buy a prestige card. If I'm playing with Galactic Orders I also need to calculate whether using one or more of the tokens is worth the loss of victory points. If someone jumps on my best core world first then I have to recalculate everything.
