In my first GeekList I make my top ten things I look for in a game. Those things that makes me want to play or buy certain games more than others.

Mind you, this is a personal list, with things that I enjoy specifically. I have a certain love for certain games, mechanics etc which might not interest you at all.

And that's ok. Diversity is what makes this world interesting.

Number 10: Multiple Routes to Victory

When a game gives you only one way to victory, it almost feels as a race in wich the most lucky (or smart) one will win.

Giving a game multiple paths to victory immediately gives it more depth, makes it more interesting. Although, there has to be some logic in this so it doesn't drown in it's complexity and overload of choices.

I suck at wargames, heavy eurogames,... because too much options, well, my brain can handle it, but then I lose the feeling of fun and feel more like I'm working. And I do that enough already.

So, a couple of options to persue are something I really like in a game.

Number 9: Immersiveness

I have no idea if the word even exists but it should.

I like games in which players automatically, because of the theme or the mechanic, starts playing a character or even a monster. I've seen it often in King of Tokyo for example: players start to make monster noises when entering Tokyo or roaring when killing another monster.

It adds SO much to the gaming experience, makes it that more fun.

On the other hand, I don't really like when a game forces you to do this. I used to play D&D and I couldn't handle being in a group where roleplaying your character was a must do. I like roleplaying when I want to and when the situation to do it feels natural.

Number 8: Co-op

I play sports, and when I play I'm competitive (but fair and a decent loser if I have to), but when it comes to games, I'm not that of an agressive player. I especially feel kinda bad when having to target a specific player. And when it is a newbie or just a bad player, I really feel sorry and sometimes lower my own play level, which takes away some of the feeling of accomplishment.

That's why I really love co-op games. There mostly easy to teach (while playing a game almost immediately) and when you win, you get to 'high five' and when you lose, you lose together, not leaving one or more people behind with that 'loser' feeling (which often would be me).

Great concept, glad this kind of games are really popular at the moment.

Number 7: Estethics

Oh, I love it when a game looks good. Production value has to be in my top ten list here. When a gameboard has great art, the cards look good, the tokens are of high quality, I feel so much proud to have this game on the table.

Because of that I am a huge 'sleever'. I like to preserve my games as good as I can, I must admit, sometimes a little too much. But that's just me.

When looking for new games to buy on BGG or Youtube, then the games that look great will get my first attention to look further into.

Number 6: Duration

I think I have a mediocre attention span, but many people I know have the focus of... 'hey look, a cloud in the shape of a cat'. You get my drift.

A game that is too long just doesn't work for me and most people I play with. Yes, I can play a long game now and then, but I prefer games that are easy to set up and take less than an hour to play. Games that invite players to say "let's play again" after a playthrough.

I hate it when players (including myself) start to yawn, to look for something else to keep them occupied, shuffle in their seats because their bottoms hurt,...

Number 5: Cards

For years I have been a Magic: The Gathering player. I loved the game, made some great friends with it and I enjoyed handling cards so much.

Shuffling cards, putting them on the table as if you can achieve something with one movement of your hand, arranging them on the play area, even putting them in sleeves is so fun.

The certain randomness and the immediate tactical choices that a hand of cards can give you are just fantastic. Cards have been here for centuries and will be here for many many more.

Number 4: Accessibility

Games that take an hour to teach, that have dozens of pages of rules or have so much mechanics it's just too much to handle won't come on my table.

I like to be able to give a short explanation to new players and learn while they play. This doesn't even mean it has to be a simple game, no, but is has to make sense to begin with.

As I mentioned before in this list, too much choices and options can ruin a game for me. Keep it simple, fun, easy to learn but with enough depth to be special and satisfying.

Number 3: Dice

Tom Vasel would love this one. Yes, I too am a dice man. I love to shuckle them in my hands and throwing them on the table. And although dice actually really hate me, I don't care too much about the randomness... when it makes sense and doesn't destroy the game.

I haven't got the biggest collection yet, but when I look at the games I already have at this moment, I have very few that don't have dice in them (except for card games like Love Letter). Dice make much games feel like games in my opinion.

They're not a must, but a big plus for me.

Number 2: Theme

This one follows a bit in the immersive nature I look for in a game. When there is much theme and flavor, and the mechanics make sence with that theme, I am sold.

I bought Battlestar Gallactica for a friend who is a big fan of this series. I didn't buy it just because it's theme, but the whole mechanics, the whole game fits the theme just right.

A game plays so much better with a theme that completes it. Hereby I'm saying that I don't think a game with only theme is good, oh no, it definately needs great mechanics too.

Number 1: 2 Player Compatibility

One that Richard Ham (Rahdo) will agree with (although maybe not as a number one, but very close to it I'm sure). I live together with my girlfriend who is less interested in boardgames but still enjoys a good game from time to time. And often she's the only 'victim' in my proximity to play with.

So I play a lot of 2 player games. This means when game needs at least 3 players, I probably won't buy it (or it has to be a classic which I will be able to play sometimes).

I'm sure this isn't an issue with much gamers, but for my girlfriend and me, this is very important. A game almost have to be 2 player compatible AND be a good game to play with two for me to play it as often as I would like to.

My (very personal) number 1 reason to choose a game.
