Magazine wargames often suffer criticism for being poorly developed due to the time constraints involved in magazine publishing, but the history of wargaming has featured several great magazines and numerous delightful magazine games. As a fan of light to medium/low counter density games, magazine games are right up my alley. In addition, you get the benefit of reading articles about the very same battle.

Please add your favorite magazine wargames to this list! Please note why you like it, its complexity level and its solitaire suitability.

The best of the best.

Unfortunately it was so so good, that I believed all mag games would be of this quality. I was often disapointed

Originally a magazine game from S&T. Nice fairly simple game, works with three or even four.

I have played this game more times than any other SPI game, period. This is my go-to North Africa game. AH's Afrika Korps is a good game too ... it has all that old game charm, but PAA makes me feel like I'm there, for some reason.

This is just an excellent game and is deserving of the awards that it received.

Michael Rinella made another magazine game that I own and enjoy Birth of a Legend Both have really good quality, tight rules, and the articles that he wrote that accompany the games are awesome.

Highly recommended!

Complexity = med-low (relative to wargames). Solitaire suitability = extremely high. There is one optional rule for a hidden counter. Everything else is perfect for solo play, but why play solitaire? I created a Vassal module for it!

My favorite Strategy & Tactics game and the magazine game I have played the most. Designer Joe Balkoski reworked the Wellington's Victory: Battle of Waterloo Game – June 18th, 1815 game system to fit the magazine format and, in my opinion, improved upon it.

Still, not a simple game but playing it is a great learning experience. The importance of utilizing combined arms it ably displayed. The Battle of Quatre Bras is small and so therefore perfect for the magazine game format. But the battle isn't very well balanced so the French are at a disadvantage. But this also makes it perfect for solo play which is how I usually play this game.

Excellent folio sized game with innovative manpower track. Made WW1 fun before WW1 became a popular hobby subject.

I prefer this magazine version over the goofy DG redo.

Great game on an interesting topic.

My first strategic game with a separate area on the map to conduct tactical battles -- pretty innovative in 1991 and much more common today.
