PART 3 IN THE "EVER." SERIES.

The following games have the potential to be boring, in spite of their high rankings (according to the posters).

You can only add one. And perhaps an honorable mention or two, but only one entry.

Please explain a little about why you were bored. That should be fun.

Hopefully this will create some more great discussion.

Have fun and be nice!

Rated 96 at time of post.

Growing your armies is too slow and painful. Painful because you have to go through an auction process to do it. Then moving them; long, drawn out. And for that matter, you have to go through a slow, auction process to do anything in this game. If you didn't plan super well to win the auction you want this round, you'll just have to put them off longer. Too slow for a battle game, IMO.

After a couple turns, I didn't like the lack of control I had over what I wanted to do, and I got bored. I finished the game, fine. But I was wishing I was playing something else the whole time. That was my first game.

In my second game, I won, and it was close. The ending should have been a tense situation. But really, I was just kind of hoping it would end, because I was a pretty bored.

Besides the things I've illustrated above, I can't articulate exactly why I'm bored when I play this game. But I am.

6 players one Saturday evening.

Interminable down time between my turns as everyone discussed their most likely next actions and swapped details of the kit they'd acquired. This was coupled with my determination to not play "Quarterback" and show the others what they needed to do to win. whistle

I was the only one driving so I was also the only one not drinking... shake

A turn downtime approaching 50 minutes had me screaming inwardly. cry

We kicked off at 7pm and eventually I suggested a few things around 1am, at 1.30am I stumbled out of the house and into the car absolutely knackered knowing we'd got a bunch of stuff wrong and not in the slightest bit bothered. The nightmare was over. Still everyone else seemed to enjoy themselves... zombie

I was hosting a gaming weekend, grilling, late night gaming followed by more gaming, and waffles in the morning! (Thanks Tim!).

So, our first game on Saturday, starting at 10:00 AM?
Dominant Species

How many players?
6

How many knew the game before?
I'm thinking 2, maybe just 1 though.

How long did going over the rules take?
1 hour.

When did we finish?
4:30 PM. Ouch!

I suppose this game might be good, but I am highly skeptical that I will personally enjoy it. The theme didn't come through for me, and I have an ecology background! So much cube pushing, so MUCH AP especially. I got up and cleaned the kitchen and dishes from 7 or 8 people, sat down, and it still wasn't my turn. I might try it again someday, but probably with 3 players, 4 if I'm feeling generous. This might have been the game experience that made me realize the risks of maxing the number of players and that I prefer games that can be wrapped up within 2 or 3 hours max.

Here are my comments from my one play of Eclipse:

The first two hours were mind blowingly cool. Giddy with exploration and alien hunting.

At hour 3, my ally takes galactic center and I'm completely walled off from the rest of the game.

What ensues are hours of ridiculous battles, with tons of dice rolling and no ground being taken. The bombing rules are incredibly stupid (neutron didn't arrive until late). Someone loaded up a ship with 4 missiles, to counter, my ally loaded their ships with 9 hull. Total slow motion lockup. I was taking turns about every 45 minutes and my turns consisted of buying monoliths. Soul crushingly BORING.

All this fighting and nothing interesting happened. I won by a landslide and I didn't care, no one else cared either. We blew 5 or so hours on this, for nothing. I'd like to try again but my god the combat in this thing makes Risk look brisk and elegant.

Now, I do actually enjoy this game in many circumstances—I rate it a 7—but the six-player game can be quite slow. Add in to the mix newbies, borderline non-gamers and/or sufferers from analysis-paralysis and things will pretty much grind to a halt, and possibly even start backing up. I remember one six-player game taking up pretty much an entire game day, and then another where the tedium became memorable in and of itself. It was five years ago, and I can still see that one guy just staring at the board, and staring, and staring.... If he had dropped dead from a heart attack at that moment I am not sure that I would have been able to keep a look of relief from crossing my face.

Honorable mention would be Battlestar Galactica. Certainly it had its fun moments, but there were also long stretches where I had nothing interesting to do.

I was board to tears and banging my head and almost banging my head against the table when I had the misfortune of playing this game. Never been so board in my life, thankfully we moved on to real games afterwords, and the copy we had was a free one from work so it went right in the trash.

As an occasional one off I quite enjoy this game.
Play it twice in quick succession with exactly the same players and boredom ensues. The dynamic is the same and half the clues used first time round are the same. It's like you're just repeating the first game.

Mentioned above - when paired with the Fantasy Flight's Arkham Horror, it is a miracle that I ever returned to boardgaming...

How can a game with a great theme, great artwork and well-done rules fail? It can fail by having a boring underlying game. When you strip away the art, the Arthurian theme, the sculpts, and the traitor, what do you have left? Poker. And, in most cases, it's slowly played out poker at that. There was not enough game in the game.

If nothing else, Shadows Over Camelot taught me that a game company can throw a ton of chrome into the box, but, unless the underlying game engages the players, the chrome is worthless.

I would never suggest this one, not even to someone who is not a gamer. My go-to game for non-gamers is Carcassonne.

This one feels like the 2004 version of one of my childhood games - really dull. I bought it several years ago when I was innocent and naive and new to Euro gaming.

I played my first game of this with five players who were probably not ready for the thought investment that can be Game of Thrones. I don't know if this group of friends is capable of planing their turns ahead of someone saying "Your turn."

For example, mustering was a painful process throughout turn order. You can only do so much with a muster. So once we started mustering, the first player took a little bit to figure what he wanted to do, no harm there in my book. Then it was me, "Here, here, and here. There, I'm done." Then the other three people, each one had to look at their cities like they didn't know they had them or didn't know what they wanted there.

This first game of GoT took our group of five no less than 5.5 hours. This is after the word go and the teaching. Overall it was at least a 7 hour investment of waiting for them to show and get ready to play and learn the game (myself included in learning). I left my friend's house at around 1:40am when I had to be at work at 6am the next day. I hated that, but I wasn't going to leave at 10 because we were only on turn four at that point.

-----------------------------------------

After this bit, I played AGoT at FFG's Days of Ice and Fire this summer and loved it. Even the 6 player base game that took us just barely over 3 hours (with one of my friends from the night above included). That said, I greatly prefer the Feast for Crows expansion, as it cuts to the chase faster. Still, a damn good game that I suffered through my first time at it.

=============================================

Honorable Mentions:

I've had less than ideal games of Dungeon Lords and BSG as well, but nothing in this bracket.

So I've only actually tried playing this once, and we didn't have anyone there that knew the rules, but this is easily the least exciting game I've come across so far.

I got it for Christmas, as it was rated highly and was by a designer I knew and was interested in, so I figured it must be an awesome game. I took it along to the tabletop society I attend a few times and eventually got people to join me to try playing it.

What ensued was a >far too long> amount of time fumbling with rules and trying to work out how things worked. The thing is I think we actually got a lot of it right, but couldn't find anything which interested any of us, and just spent a lot of time being bored. Eventually my girlfriend chipped in with the question 'shall we just give up' and well, I've never seen such a unanimous agreement to do so with any other game.

I don't even care how petty it is, nor that it might be fun if I played with people who know it. I sold it for quite a good price not long after as I couldn't motivate myself to make people go through it again, and have been happy with that decision since. There's so many better games with cooler art and mechanics that don't make me feel like I'm processing a spreadsheet, so this is my entry for this geeklist.

Thanks for reading my whiny complains, Chris out ^^

I am keeping w/ the theme of this GL. I don't really hate this game, but I simply don't care one way or the other whether I win or not. I've played it about ~5 times, and there is nothing about any of those games that stands out. I did stuff, I played cards, but never thought much about it. There never seemed to be any point.

I don't like Catan very much, but I have definite reasons why, and can relate to at least three very specific times I played it where I had a bad time. I remember them, and while they weren't enjoyable, they stick in my head. But PoF? For me, it's the poster child for 'dull, dry, flavorless' Euro.

(and that's coming from someone who loves Euros.)
