Christmas is coming, and I'm hoping to share the fun of gaming with my nearest and dearest (read: cynically buying them games in the hope that they'll play them with me). I haven't decided who's getting what just yet, but I thought I'd list them as I go.

Are you giving games as presents this year? If so, add them to the list along with why you think they'd make good gifts!

For: Son

Age: 9

Because: He asked for it! And he generally likes all things fantasy-themed as long as they don't take themselves too seriously. I've never played it, but it looks like the kind of game he could really get into as a story unfolding on the table.

For: Son

Age: 9

Because: He enjoys cooperative games, particularly Pandemic, and I'd like to give him the chance to try some more. I'm sure he'd enjoy the theme, and what boy doesn't enjoy the fundamental concept of bashing things?

For: Wife

Age: 20-something

Because: She loves H.P. Lovecraft. I can't say I understand it myself. He's always seemed excessively wordy to me, but she's very attractive, so I overlook our literary differences.

I'm not sure which Lovecraftian game to buy for her. The Fantasy Flight ones seem very thematic, but the game mechanics seem a little tacked-on to my mind. Investigators chasing generic "clues" doesn't seem like a very fun way to spend an evening to me. If anyone has any suggestions for alternatives I'd welcome them!

Her favourite game is Alhambra, if that helps.

For: Sister

Age: 20-something

Because: She has always been interested in the Venice carnival. She's visited the city and has a collection of masks. I also think she'd really like the artwork.

For: Mother-in-law

Age: 60-something

Because: It might seem an odd choice, especially as she's never actually seen a kaiju film, but we recently played King of Tokyo together for the first time. Upon unexpectedly winning the game with an amazing dice roll, my mother-in-law leapt up from the table and charged around the room in celebration. Frankly, I'm willing to pay whatever this game might cost if it means I get to see that again. :-)

Not actually a gift, but I'd like to have this on-hand to play with all of the kids in the family in the run-up to Christmas. I can't imagine anything more atmospheric than a darkened room, a flickering candle, snow falling outside the window and a bunch of children eagerly awaiting the big day.

I bought one for $5 at a local overstock/discount store and found I got back a lot more change than I expected. When I checked out my receipt I found that this five dollar game was only ringing up at 99 cents on the register.

I bought a stack of them and have given one copy to a half dozen boardgamers already.

Still have a couple so one will be going to the guy who sets up my end-of-the-month board game meet despite the fact that he owns very few games.

Additionally, I do genuinely like the game and play it solitaire every week or so.

For: Wife

Age: 20-something

Because: As well as H.P. Lovecraft, she's into all sorts of classic horror and supernatural literature. The Bottle Imp isn't one of her all time favourites, but the game itself looks pretty intriguing for what it is, and the older edition with the wooden bottle looks quite nice.
