This is Captain, my dog. He's a cocker-spaniel / poodle mix (a cockapoo, which is hard to say without giggling).

BGG, say hi to Captain. Captain, say hi to BGG.

Don't let the cute fluffy exterior fool you. This foul beast yearns for sustenance. Never mind that we actually feed him too much (according to the vet) - if you were to see the way he devours anything loose in our apartment you would swear that he is starving.

Captain has a special knack for finding loose bits and pieces of board games. Last night, as I unboxed and punched The Manhattan Project: Second Stage, Captain literally licked his lips. Not that he would be so foolhardy as to try and eat it when I'm staring at him - he's much sneakier than that. When my attention is elsewhere, I will find him chewing on a bit or mini. He has plenty of toys and other things to chew on - but for some reason he harbors a special hatred for the things he shouldn't eat.

He doesn't just eat board game parts either. A small sampling of his attempted diet from the last year:

An USB Drive
A box of pens
A box of kindling
3 blankets
8oz of Dark Chocolate (that was a fun emergency vet trip)
A wicker basket
A spider
An apple, and the backpack that the apple was firmly hidden in
A ballot

So, I present to you this geeklist. May it serve as a word of warning.

P.S. Feel free to add your own stories.

This was the first game that Captain mercilessly attacked. In the midst of playing, a few coins fell to the floor. None of us noticed because they were from the bank.

When I was cleaning up the game, I found a couple pieces of soggy cardboard on the carpet. They were vaguely coin shaped. I shrugged it up to us not paying attention to Captain while we were playing, and ignored it...

A late night game of Apples to Apples was not put away properly. People had stashed their cards in strange places near their seats, and one person forgot to return them to the box at the end.

We found what remained the next morning.

Farewell, "Sassy" and "Smelly."

A few nights later, I was playing Flash Point with my wife. We had just purchased and punched the game, and were excited to try this new coop. In our excitement, three flame tokens fell to the ground.

These were larger than 7 Wonder coins (thus taking more time to chew and digest), so I actually caught Captain in the act and I managed to save one and half tokens.

I can't be sure that Captain ate anything from Pandemic, but it seems likely. We were playing a game of Pandemic, and paused to refresh our drinks and use the restroom and whatnot. I had learned my lesson a bit by this point, so I made sure Pandemic was in the center of the table and there wasn't anything near the edge of the table.

I walked out of the room for mere seconds and returned to find Captain standing on the Pandemic board. He wasn't focused on the eating anything from Pandemic - at this point he was focused on the bowl of chips next to the board.

To put some perspective, this table is much too high for my little dog to get up on. He had managed to jump onto a chair and then jump from the chair to the table in the manner of seconds - and did so silently. He even kindly managed to sweep all the cubes off the board without us hearing him.

Ah... Captain's first mini. I'm glad that it came with a game like Zombies, where the mini's are low quality and numerous. The bottom half of Lady Zombie #48 is forever gone. I rescued her top half (i.e. stepped on it in the dark and swore).

Galaxy trucker baffles me to this day. At this point, I am well versed in making sure Captain does not get onto the table and that we don't drop anything. We push in the chairs (so he doesn't have the ability to jump up) when we leave the table, and we don't leave things on the edge.

Nevertheless, I found Captain chewing on a blue cube about an hour after playing Galaxy Trucker. It was none the worse for wear, but I was still perplexed.

Two days later, I found him chewing on another blue cube from Galaxy Trucker. The more perplexing thing was that we hadn't played another game of Galaxy Trucker - I assume he stashed the extra cube for later.

I feel guilty about the War of the Ring orc. Obviously, I did not chew it. That was my dog. But I feel guilty because it wasn't my copy of WOTR, it was a friends.

I feel less guilty because this was a two part job. Jim's dog Gus is much taller than Captain; and it was Gus' tail that swept the orc off the table to his doom.

Captain is smart enough to lie in wait for his moment. He's also dumb enough to get scared of himself in the mirror. In this case, it was his speed that surprised me.

We were playing a hearty game of Eclipse at guy's night when a beverage was spilled. The guy's in my group reacted very professionally and quickly - they prevented the spill from spreading and contaminating other pieces (and also verbally berated the spiller). In the chaos, one player board got swept off the table; we quickly handled the spill then picked up the board and all the wooden cubes and circles.

"Uh, guys, I'm missing one green action disc."

We searched high and low and did not find it. I shrugged and gave him an extra disc from another game for the time being.

The disc did reappear a day later or so; the bright green was hard to miss when I took my dog out to go to the bathroom. I let nature keep the disc.

This is Torquemada, a cocker spaniel.

He is a big fan of dice. He especially likes D20s because they are a good size for his mouth. Magic the Gathering uses promo D20s as life counters. We used to play MtG on our landing with our life counters sitting beside us. Toq would run upstairs, grab a life counter in his mouth, and sprint downstairs again.

One of us would have to chase him downstairs, bribe him with cheese to drop the life counter... and remember how much life we were on before the game was interrupted.

***

Toqey also hates being excluded from rooms. Anywhere we are, he wants to be. We played Arkham Horror in the spare room with the board on the floor. Toq broke into the spare room by hurling himself at the door, kicked over a cup of coffee (thankfully onto the carpet, not the game) and ran right across the board. It now has fine claw marks on the bottom of the board... near Lost in Time and Space.

***

We now game on the kitchen table. Toqey leaps into my lap, flops his head onto the table, and drools on the game board/card tableau.

****

When Toq is not gaming, he has chewed:

1. Two computer login tags, preventing my husband working from home;
2. Two £60 ($90) dog beds;
3. Four sofa cushions, worth £500 (about $700)...
