Wow! I cannot believe it is almost that time again.....BGGCon!!! surprise

As I have done the last 3 years, I create this geek list as a way to document what games I am most looking to play at the con. This helps my group of friends and I to plan our time accordingly. It also helps to make sure that I have all the rules read ahead of time so that I am able teach if I need to.

I'll use the same priority rating system I've used in previous years:

- A must play game. I will stalk the game if I have to.
- Very interested in playing it, but won't be overly disappointed if I don't
- It's on my radar and would join in a game, but I won't make an effort to seek it out.

Games are listed in priority order and may change as the con gets closer and more information comes out regarding all the new Essen games.

It just doesn't feel like BGGcon without a new release from Uwe Rosenberg to get excited about. This year, to make up for not having anything new last year, he's giving us 2!

Caverna looks to be Agricola with some tweaks. Instead of a family farmers, you are controlling a family of dwarves where half of you home board is in a mountain with tunnels and caverns. Still present are round cards, animals (now with donkeys and sheep dogs!) and the pending harvest/feeding.

One of the biggest changes is the doing away the the occupation/improvement cards. I happen to really like the variability that the cards in Agricola created so I'm curious to see if all the other additions make up for that. One of the additions is the ability to forge weapons for your dwarves. The better the weapon, the better the spoils when you send him out on an expedition.

Pretty excited to try this one out, but I have a feeling that when its all said and done, I will still prefer playing Agricola.

As for the other new Rosenberg release, Glass Road also has some elements that will feel familiar to his previous games. It has the resource management and the constructing of different buildings for benefit like Ora & Labora or even Le Havre. He has also included resource wheels that may seem at first glance at be similar to the one in Ora, but these are in fact used very differently. Here, each player has their own personal wheels used to indicate how many of each resource they have collected and to indicate when collected resources are converted to more valuable resources. Seems so simple but very clever.

All the being said, the core of the game revolves around the action selection mechanism. Each player chooses amongst 15 specialist cards each of which perform different actions. If you are able to choose a specialist that no one else is able to, you will get a better benefit from the card. Trying to guess what others are going to do so you can get the most out of your actions seem to be name of the game here.

I kept hearing alot of buzz about this one and from the name assumed it was more of a traditional rail game. This is actually a worker placement game with a rail theme, not unlike last years Snowdonia. In this one, players are all competing to expand and modernize railways on their own personal boards. There appears to be a lot of different ways to score points in this one, which a generally like. We'll see if this one lives up to the hype.

Woohoo, another Gerdts rondel game! Except this time instead of an actual rondel each player has a set of cards to play actions with. Once a card is played, it can't be played again until you play a specific card that lets up you put played cards back into your hand. As the game goes on, players can add additional action cards into there hands to give them more flexibility. I have high hopes for this one.

This is a big year for new Feld releases and I'm hoping to get the chance to try them all at BGG this year. The first one is Amerigo which features the use of the cube tower formerly used in Shogun/Wallenstein. Here the tower is being used as a way to set which actions are available to each player during a round.

After reading the rules, it feels to me like the use of the tower is a bit of a forced novelty and not all the important to the game play. However even if the tower ends up being a dud, its still a Feld game so chances are high that I will enjoy it.

A civ card game that looks very similar to Through the Ages, with I'm a big fan of. One big difference is the way conflict is handled. Here you aren't directing specific attacks at other players like in TtA. Rather when a War occurs, then each player must have a certain military strength or suffer the consequences of defeat.

Another feature of Nations that looks interesting is the fact that each player can choose to play at different difficulty levels. This way an experienced player can play with a newbie and still expect to have a close contest. At least that's the idea.

On my radar but need to read the rules.

Edit: Just read the rules and this game looks really cool! Its actually a race game instead of a typical VP game. There are a bunch of different character cards that will assist you on you journey that apparently all correspond to real historic figures. Along the way you need to decide when best to setup camp, which allows you take character cards played back into your hand, but also takes up time if you have a lot of supplies weighing you down. This is moving up in priority.

This game has been out for a few months, but I have not had the chance to play it yet. This has a similar action selection mechanism to Egizia where you can make different selections along a defined path, but each selction must be further along then all of your previous selections. With these selections you are gathering supplies and crew for an upcoming voyage. The game will consist of 3 of these voyages where you will be attacking towns and fortified cities for fame and riches.

This is fast little filler by Scott Nicholson that involves 5 simultaneous, real-time auctions. You bid by quickly dropping bidding cubes into different cups. The auctions only last a few seconds so you have to think fast.

It looks like there is an official scheduled tournament for this game on Friday where the final will use a giant sized version of the game. Even if I don't sign up for the event, I really want to try this one out.

This one caught my eye purely because it was designed by William Attia, who previously brought us Caylus. The rules left me a little underwhelmed but after reading a few positive reviews I'm interested in giving it chance.

The core of the game revolves around a market of cards, laid out in a 3x3 grid with spaces between them. Players can either place new workers in the market between the space of 2 cards or remove them to either build or use the ability of one of the cards its next to. However once you start removing workers, you can no longer place any new ones. The cost of building/using a card goes up based on how many other workers are adjacent to it. Looks a bit like a game of chicken as you have to decide how early you want to stop placing new workers so you can grab that card you really need be someone else does.

Pick up and deliver game where instead of delivering little cubes, you are delivering tetris pieces! laugh

Since players are smugglers though, there are customs officers to deal with and avoid (or send to a rival smuggler) as you try and make you deliveries. I've read mixed reviews on this so far but it looks interesting enough to give it a try.
