Yes, as an insufferably ignorant Yank who's only been to Europe once* my knowledge is sadly deficient. Fortunately, logging 53+ hours in the fantastic game Euro Truck Simulator 2 has enabled me to visit a large part of Europe and learn much in the process. Herein, are the top 5 things I've learned.

* 3 days in London (which is very similar to New York only older) and 4 days in Edinburgh which is the most amazing city I've ever been honored to visit

Hot air balloons are more prevalent than birds and airplanes combined. They float like watchful sentinels over every countryside.

It is a rare event to drive more than 30 miles (or 50km to those unenlightened heathen who drive on the correct side of the road yet still use the soulless twice be-damned metric system) without seeing a plethora of piñatas hot air balloons drifting across the sky.

Here is a balloon playing hide and seek.

Peek-a-boo, I see you.

Even more numerous than balloons are the vast numbers of ninja cops that infest the EU. There must be at least 1 ninja cop every 200 meters and they are undisputed masters of both concealment and pedantic enforcement of minor offenses.

Even in the dead of night with no sign of civilization in sight, they are waiting to electronically assess you a fine for failing to turn your headlights on quickly enough at dusk. And don't fall for that green light on the traffic signal in town. As it turns red just as you begin to accelerate, the ninja cops will be there with a citation.

Because, you know, they're ninjas.

European motorists are the WORST drivers in the world, far worse than road-raged Americans ever dreamed of being. And the legal system is a travesty.

I am traveling the autobahn at 90km and a car enters the roadway directly in front of me at 5 km...and I am found at fault for the resulting carnage? With no oncoming traffic, a motorist stops in the middle of the intersection in front of me and sits there until after the light changes before proceeding. Result: I get fined for running a red light. I am completely in a round about when a car fails to give way and slams into my trailer...and I receive a €550 fine?

Where is a ninja cop when you need one?

There are an unbelievable amount of jobs to be had delivering forklifts. Having previously noted the driving habits of our friends across the pond, I can only surmise that this insatiable demand is the result of an equally unbelievable amount of forklift wrecks.

If ever I land upon hard times financially, I shall move to western europe to become the king of safe forklift operation and all shall bow before my yellow carriage.

A morning delivery of forklifts to the local florist. They shall require 2 more loads by the afternoon.

And the final thing I've learned is that traveling the autoroutes, Bundesstraßen and motorways of Europe delivering goods here and there is an enjoyable and relaxing way to spend a few hours. The driving simulation,RPG-ish elements of improving your playable driver, and the strategy level of building your own shipping empire combine in perfect blend of engaging, addictive and challenging gameplay.

Don't judge this one without trying it. Give the demo a try and you just might be pleasantly surprised. Happy trucking!

The biggest lesson I have learned so far is that being a truck driver in Europe is an amazing way to get mad cash yo. Most jobs I take are worth well over 10.000€. And even accounting for expenses, I can usually pull in well over 20.000€/day just driving my own truck. If I could earn that kind of money in a job in real life, I'd already have built up enough of a bank balance to be retired.
