I started thinking about all the games I have played over the years, only recently thinking of it as a hobby. As far back as I can remember I have played board, card and role-playing games, but it was just something I did with friends, never considering it to be more than that.

I then tried to think back to my earliest memory of games and tried to pin point what really got me into them. Sure, as a kid I played all the usual games like Sorry, Ludo, Game of Life, etc, but they were things I played with my siblings, they weren't games I thought about long after we stopped playing.

So here is my list, with the first item being the first memory aged 5 or 6, and the 'choose your own adventure' being at about 8 or 9 (it sticks in my mind as my parents had a brief separation at that time and a couple of these kept me company over those very strange few weeks). The list starts somewhere around 1979...

So wow, this started out as just a way to kill some time and try and remember the different games I have played. One memory sparks another... and I know there are more. I know some people have crazy ideas about re-playing and reviewing all their games... I am not sure I could go there.

Please enjoy and comment, it is nice to hear from people have played some of the older ones especially.

Wow, so this states a release of 1975. I would have been two years old at the time, so assume this was in print for a while. It would have to take top slot (bumping sorry)... for this truly was the first game I ever recall playing.

I was not going to add these kind of games, but this and one other I do have fond childhood memories of.

I have since tried to buy the game, but man it is an expensive collector's item.

I am putting this at the top, only because I remember this always being at my Grand Parents house and is the first game I played that was not Monopoly, Battleships, Cluedo... you know the usual ones (yes Sorry may be considered usual, but we did not own it and I don't know anyone else who does).

Another early childhood memory. Odd, a game where you are being hunted by a vampire specifically targetted at young kids. Gotta love the 70s!

We did play this a lot as a family, so it is all good.

The very first game book I read. I would have been about 9 at the time, though I definitely thought I was a little younger than this. Anyway, I had a couple in this series and read the hell out of them. The Horror on High Ridge is the most memorable for me.

I think perhaps one of them was a freebie gotten through saving tokens on cereal packets...

From "Choose Your Own Adventure" books I moved onto the ultimate in game books; Fighting Fantasy.

My neighbour actually refereed this for me the first time I played it and from then on I was hooked. I bought all in the series up until somewhere in the 20s when I finally decided enough was enough. I wasn't playing them, just collecting and my interest slowly faded (a couple of entries down is the reason why).

The first proper RPG I played. I absolutely adored this game, I just couldn't get enough. I would have been about 10 years old, somewhere between 1983 and 1984.

As much as I loved this game, it was a short lived affair due to another, more popular RPG that everyone was playing. No points for guessing what it was!

The grand daddy of them all and of course it would have to feature somewhere. Star Frontiers gave way to basic Dungeons and Dragons. Aleena, how many times did we adventure together? How many Kobolds did we slay?

This lead to me creating my own monsters handbook, long before there was such a thing. It had me painting (badly) figures with enamel paints from my airfix models... it would be many years before I discovered acrylic, still they were good days.

For once it seems my Mum had paid some attention to what I was doing and this little gem popped into my Christmas present pile. Though I never actually got to play a campaign with other people, I read it and re-read the rules. I loved the freedom with which this book approached magic. It inspired me into creating my own RPGs (none of which were particularly good, but you have to start somewhere).

Finally I graduated. Advanced Dungeons and Dragons... dual class heroes! Amazing.

I played AD&D from 1st to 3rd edition, all through my teens and well into adult life. I had a brief foray back into this a couple of years ago, but it wasn't the same. Many a great adventure; laughter and tears were had. Though I stopped playing I went on a mission to collect AD&D stuff... all those old modules I couldn't get as a kid, well I have most of them now.

Oooooh, Christmas time. Our little group met up for our regular AD&D session, but the DM (the elder brother of one of the players) said "Not today."

Instead, he had us play this little game our of a White Dwarf magazine. It was silly, but fun.

I have this somewhere in my loft, printed out and mounted on to card. I will find it and put the components up.

How could I forget this game. I would have been about 11 or 12 when we found this at a jumble sale. At the time we only had a couple board games (not including dross like Mike Reid's Pop Quiz!) and this was very different to all the other.

I found one of the playing pieces a few months back (when clearing out a cupboard at my Dad's house) and it sparked a search, if somewhat fruitless, for the rest of the game.

I did look at picking it up on e-bay, but it is now considered too collectible for me to be able to afford this over something I would much rather have.

My sister acquired this from somewhere and I remember we did play it a few times. Like the Dad's Army game, we found the character cards for this game not so long ago (probably at the same time actually), but could not locate the board / box they they belong to. It was probably for the best.

Edit: November 24th 2013 - I just found this game in a random box at my parents. I am actually going to play this for better or for worse!

Somewhere in the midst of the RPG's I met a friend who had a seemingly inexhaustible supply of board games, most of which I had never heard of (actually, I hadn't heard of any of them).

There were no Monopoly's, Cluedo's, Game of Life's in his collection. The first one I recall playing was Dark Tower, It was so much fun then and we cracked it out a few years back and had a blast then too (amazingly it still worked). I love the bazaar and the fact some people just want a better deal and end up with nothing. Great game.

So then came Risk. I played it once with my friend before he declared "we aren't playing this anymore, there is too much luck involved."

At about 12 or 13, having never played a game like it, I was a little taken aback. "Too much luck?" You mean there are games where dice aren't involved (or not to the extent of Risk at least?)

Honestly, I still enjoy Risk and only really played to any extent when I was in my late 20s.

Kingmaker, my favourite childhood game. The dodgy mechanics didn't matter back then, the fact that someone would sit on the Isle of Douglas with a huge force, while someone else wandered the British country side with an equally formidable force didn't matter. The lone suicide runs to take out your nobles, that was fine too.

This game appealed to me on every level. I loved the history, the theme. Being Lancashire born (if not bred), the fact that I could fight those Yorkist dastards was great, Oddly, in our games, everyone else always favoured the House of York.

I don't think we ever finished a game

So the same friend of Risk, Diplomacy and in fact most of the board games on this list, then produced this.

Another game I loved. Another game we never really finished, with everyone eventually just chancing their arm with the 'do or die' cards in an effort to just get the game ended.

I now own 2 copies of this myself. I have yet to play either of them, but fully intend to one of these fine days.

This one is most definitely out of place. It is one my earlier game memories and I recall never really having a clue what or how I was supposed to win. That and the game owner seemed to exploit the game with some odd buy and sell loophole that the rest of use were not familiar with.

I would love to play it again, perhaps one day I will if I can convince the owner to bring it to the table.

This was wonderfully new to me. Being able to design your own car with which to destroy your opponents, how could things get better?

I would soon find out!
