While the past week was more known for being Halloween week, for us here in the Philippines (and maybe for some other predominantly Catholic countries) it was more known for being All Saints and All Souls Day. As such, families trouped to the cemetery to visit their dear departed loved ones. For many families it is a joyous event, as it is an excuse to meet up with relatives and kin and to renew family ties.

In the US I know that Memorial Day is similar, but for those who live in other countries do you also have this tradition of visiting your dear departed dead?

Holidays are also for an opportunity for families to do things together. One classic option which seems to be done less and less these days is to go out and watch a movie together. Is this activity still an option for your family?

Games, games and more games!

First Saturday of the month, so a good day of gaming, and then Sunday I spent some time gaming with my husband and children. It was half-term last week, but we did surprisingly little gaming - we were out and about three days (visiting my sister, swimming and going to Leicester Space Museum), and on the middle day the kids were too tired for much - they spent a lot of time on the Wii playing Endless Ocean instead (my favourite Wii game!), and we got all the boring jobs like haircuts out of the way!

Played with other adults:

25 x Magic the Gathering (my husband and I spent a couple of hours on Sunday morning playing this)

1 x 23, Agricola, Amun-Re, Augustus, Alles im Eimer, Colosseum, Core Worlds, Eminent Domain, High Society, Innovation, King of Tokyo, Love Letter, Macao, Palaces of Carrara, Power Grid (on the Japan map), Saint Petersburg, Suburbia, Through the Ages, Ticket to Ride:Europe, Tigris & Euphrates, Turfmaster

Played with my children:

2 x Regenwurmen Junior
2 x Ingenious (introduced it to my 6 year old son - although he wasn't too happy in the second game when his 3 year old brother won, with my help)
2 x Quit

1 x Creationary, Flash Point Fire Rescue, Gulo Gulo, Ramses Return (I hate this game, but the kids pull it out every so often)

The new and shiny Francis Drake was definitely the Game-of-the-Week at the Saccenti home. Time will tell if the game play holds up as well as the beauty of it. So far we like it.

3x -7- Hey, That's My Fish!
2x -7- Francis Drake
2x |9| Race for the Galaxy
2x -6- Times Square
2x -8- Tzolk'in
1x -6- 1775: Rebellion: Provisional rating. Played this as a four-player at game night. Best co-op experience I have had to date. Co-op games are not my thing, at least so far.
1x -7- Bruges: I need to start considering this as potentially entering my Top Twenty. Antony (age 14) is consistently asking to play this. Awesome.
1x -4- Formula D
1x -5- Gulo Gulo
1x -8- Settlers of Catan
1x -2- Shadow Hunters: The boys played this at game night. I know better.
1x -7- Stone Age
1x -6- Takenoko
1x -8- Ticket to Ride
1x -7- Village

Not that many games played this week. Got Onirim in a trade and tried it solo two times. Looks good and I'll probably play it more often. Found King of Tokyo at the local thrift store and grabbed it quickly! Tried one solo game to see how it was. My guess is that it's not something my group will enjoy, but we'll see.

I finally got to play Small World last week, having had it on my radar for some time. I really enjoyed it, and it clearly has lots of scope for different combinations of powers and races to make it different each time.

Also new to me was Starship Merchants, which I'd acquired in a recent Maths trade. The rules were a bit imprecise at times which made it more difficult to pick up than it might have done, but once we got going we enjoyed it. Again, there are clearly different strategies possible, and I think it will play quite quickly now we've got our heads round it (and looked up our rules queries).

Also on the table were Race for the Galaxy and 7 Wonders with Helena, as well as Cosmic Encounter with Daniel and Matthew and The Awful Green Things From Outer Space with Matthew. My AGTFAS slaughtered most of his crew, and he then had fun trying to get them home in the programmed escape scenario - so much so that when they all died he tried again with several more boatloads until some of them survived!

Last week also saw the start of my boardgaming lunchtime club at our local primary club, in which 10 Primary 6 children shouted their way to success at Pit and braved zombies, spiders and falling rocks in Diamant. It seemed to go extremely, so I'll be back this week for another installment. Wonder what to try next?

I held our latest 3rd grade game day last week, and we played:
- Hurry Up
- Stacrobats
- Perfection
- Tumblin-Dice
- Villa Paletti
- Tiddlywinks
- CooCoo the Rocking Clown!

My son and I finally got to try a new (old) game when his grandma was in town: Gem Dealer. He and I also played Elk Fest & Mahlzeit!.

Both kids and I played O Zoo le Mio, and with a little help from me, my 3 1/2 year old was beating us soundly. She quit halfway through the game, and still almost won!

Our local gaming group’s occasional game day happened last weekend while my mom was in town, so I could only sneak over for a couple of hours after the kids went to bed, but got to learn Lords of Waterdeep. Yay! An adult game!

Made it to game night Monday. Played Firefly and Council of Verona, which had just arrived in the mail.

Firefly is a pickup and delivery game with a lot of theme. It really felt like I was flying around trying to get contracts and hire crew and evade the Alliance and the Reavers. (If you haven't seen the show, think Han Solo.) I didn't get hit with any bad events, but the game has potential to be pretty swingy--you could lose all your cargo in one shot. I enjoyed it a lot and will think about getting this one.

Council of Verona is a mini-game along the lines of Love Letter. It was pretty neat but I'm not sure it will have the replay value of LL. There are a few characters with agendas (more Capulets on the council; more Montagues; equal numbers (or 4 neutrals); Romeo and Juliet are together...) and it's fun to try to fulfill the agendas of the characters you are influencing, but you can only put influence on 2 people (3 but one is a zero so it only matters if you play it in a +1 spot). I will definitely try it some more.

Also played Undermining (2nd play). It's fun to upgrade your mining robots but you can only do it once or twice and the game is over. I feel like the game should go on a little longer (maybe until two stacks of contracts are empty?) for there to be a real sense of accomplishment.

I also don't know how many of our members are in a country that celebrates Halloween, but for those who are, I'd be curious to see pictures of what you or your kids went as this year! At the very least, give us a description!
