You know the one. You're teaching someone/people a new game and you go through all the rules but there is always 'that one rule' they'll forget that will be a crunch rule. It might be a certain condition for point scoring for those last few valuable points. Or it could be a seemingly small mechanic that you know through experience can have a major effect on a game turn.

This is one I found just recently. Koiogran Turn: Advances the ship
straight ahead, changing its facing by 180°. The other player forgot about the turn so had a round where several of his ships were facing completely the wrong way unable to attack and were sitting ducks for that round and the next.

Being in debt at the end of the game costs you victory points. I've seen this affect players at least once. Also I've seen players not take in that completed links score victory points at the end as well.

En Passant rule. Because that one catches everyone the first time it's used on them If a pawn moves two spaces on its first move it can still be taken as if it had moved one spaces.

Claiming/using a residence (income track) card can either be used to move you up the income track or for VPs equal to your current spot on the income track. I always forget the part after the "or".

Inevitably every time I play, someone manages to put a ‘G’ on the board which of course just throws everyone off the rest of the game.

When bearing off, you may only take off men from a lower-numbered point than the die shows if there are no men remaining on any higher-numbered points.

Actually pretty simple, but nobody seems to understand it on their first try. Or after shown an example, they'll say they get it, but then will violate it at the first opportunity.

When air raiding amphibious units in port, do not roll for damage after achieving hits, apply only 1 damage point per hit.

Especially since it often doesn't come up at all in any given game.

When you go to close a gate, it's a Fight or Lore check. Not a Combat check. You don't get to use your tommy gun to close the gate.

Some players will forget the rule that you always put a card in your discard pile after taking or showing it. It's a simple rule and essential for how the game works, but some people seem unable to remember it.

You cannot bribe the palace guard if you do not have a token there.

If a player's token is greater than or equal to the palace guard, the player may enter the palace.
If the player's token is less than the palace guard, the player may pay a bribe of the difference between the guard's strength and his token's strength.
Often, a new player will assume that if they don't have a token there, it is like have a token of zero strength, and they erroneously believe they can just pay a bribe of the guard's strength.
If I notice a new player hasn't put a token there late in the placement round, I will repeat this rule to make sure they understand.

* Of course, a player with a Key artifact may use it as an alternate way of getting into the palace.

Rule: you can't have 2x buildings with same name / illustration.

I emphasize it every time I teach the game. Always someone gets it wrong.

There is one rule in all of boardgamedom that is UNLEARNABLE.

You cannot do anything to the territory the king is in. Ever. I mean it.

Can I put caballero's in the territory with the king? No.
What about my grande? Nope.
I know, I'll move another player's caballero's out? No.
So I can put my own in? No, I already told you that.
Well, what if I change the score board? No, absolutely not.
Gah, this is hard. Okay, I'll just move some of my caballero's into the King's territory I guess. NO YOU CAN'T DO THAT GODDAMMIT!!!
What if I moved another player's cubes out....

I've literally had this exact conversation. Many times.

The maximum number of advisers in any capital cannot be more than the MAXIMUM number of cloisters OF ONE COLOR in that country. I try to explain this rule carefully but sometimes I am the one that breaks it! Great game by the way!

INTERNAL conflicts are always decided on Red tiles, no matter the color of the leader. It's EXTERNAL conflicts that depend on tiles of the same color as the leader.

Whenever a newish player starts a conflict I always try to repeat that before they pull tiles out from behind their screen, until I'm sure they've totally gotten it.

You can't play the joust field if you don't have a blue cube from the previous turn! Cloth farms are activated after the field. One person will sometime it wrong when I teach the game.

A bit more advanced: you also need 1 coin. It's a bizarre to find yourself in the joust field with a blue cube but no coins... has happened to me.

You can only harvest fields with at least 2 cards, with the exception that you may harvest a 1-card field if none of your fields have 2 cards.

Runner-up rule: you may plant traded cards in any order, and even harvest in between, since you can harvest at any time.

You can't turn a newborn animal into food during breeding. Inevitably, someone will attempt this, realize when we tell them that it's not allowed, and complain they would have played the entire season much differently had they known

Do not put defeated villains into the discard pile. This happens every game guaranteed. I even catch myself doing it haha.

Healing is only possible when NOT in Tokyo.

I always emphasize this rule when i explain the game to someone new but you can bet that someone will EVENTUALLY try to heal himself while in Tokyo...
