We've all been there. Maybe you spent all your IPCs to research nuclear bombers only to fail to achieve it. Maybe you've fortified an area to look impregnable and someone's luck allowed a meager force to break through. The result is always the same: Your opponent making a wryly congratulatory remark while you blink at the board incredulously wondering why in the wide world of sports your best laid plans didn't flopped like a de-boned chicken.

You deploy Faramir's Rangers. There is a frightening volley of arrows and confusion as Faramir's men emerge from the shadows and underbrush. The Rangers quickly return to hiding, leaving their enemies completely unscathed and yet very bewildered.

Sheriff awesome possum was perfectly positioned in a building to shoot out of a window at the stream of zombies flowing towards Sally the bait standing in the open. He then proceeds to roll a 1 on his attack 6 turns in a row. Undead Sally proceeds to eat his face.

Up until Turn 5 everything goes well for the USSR. Needing only two more Victory Points, they disregard the overwhelming presence of the US in Europe, being confident that the recently played Europe Scoring card wont come up again for a while. Then, at the beginning of turn six the US player scores Europe for the Victory, leaving the USSR player in shambles.

Fighting the space marines nemisis, the orks, I had a great plan going outflanking the orks and inflicting substantial losses and finally bringing the full weight of an Imperator to bear down on the helpless ork scum. Line up the shot at a cluster that would surely kill if not inflict enough blast markers to send them running for the hills when WHOOPS... a catastrophic damage roll resulting in the demise of my huge war engine. At that point, the tables turned and I was screwed. I ended up suffering a major defeat!

Okay, so this is completely my fault but here goes.

A game over the weekend with both expansions and 5 players, heading for 10 VP.

Using the "Imperial 2" card that allows you to qualify for multiple objectives and give you a point for holding Rex. I look at my options, pause, look again. Yeah, I can do this.

The current scores are 3 of us on 4 points and 2 on 2. Four of the top 3's points also come from artefacts.

I grab Imperial 2, take Rex, complete my preliminary objective and (due to an incoming law) sell a tech to immediately spend 12 trade goods.

4 VP in one turn, pushing me to 8.

Heads are spinning my way, but my newly received secret objective only require me to build 5 dreadnoughts (I already hold Rex and have 3 space docks). However I am rather poorly defended. So I grab initiative in the strategy phase with a plan to pump 4 dreadnoughts out at my (currently undefended) home system

The player to my left plays a card allowing him to take one action before me.

That's okay, even though he took warfare that fleet can't reach my home system, and it's only one carrier.

He plays Flank Speed, dropping a troop straight onto my home world, destroying my space dock and striking me a blow that's going to take several turns to recover from. And then another player sweeps in and seizes my artefact.

I ended the game on 7 VP. And, despite a brief resurgence, with a giant hostile fleet in my home system.

Lesson learnt.

Late 1970s, 5 player game; down to two. I was on the verge of victory attacked with 30+ armies against my sister's 3 in Mongolia…she won. Then turned in a card match for a horde of Mongols and swept the board…Epic Fail before the term had even been coined.
