In which Sai and Erick TIED, with Oz finishing third an I way behind.

We played half the game with one too few cards in our hands. Thanks to Goo for pointing that out. This despite being the first game where everyone had played before (or perhaps it was that that caused us to not double-check the rules)

New Kramer/Kiesling. First play for all three of us. Sai edged me, with Kevin trailing.

All three took different approaches and ended up with similar results.

3-player game

I'm still uncertain about this one. Ultimately, I don't think it's any deeper than coup despite the longer play time, but gives a bluffing/tactical game without the necessary lying of Coup.

Fun, quick game that is all about timing. I liked it. I like when a game is distilled down to just a few elements that work well together. No fiddly, no fuss.

market manipulation + set collection

Simple and focused.

I can never articulate what I love about T&T.

One of the elements I like is what I think helped me win. Part of the game is controlling game length. It's not about scoring as many points as you can, it's more about scoring more than your opponents.

I was on pace to play all of my houses. I started off with great footing by picking up some of the hard to reach cities (Basel, Salzburg, Lodz) so I was in position to eventually pick up all but one area chit (either purple or orange/red). But Erick and Greg both went for early, long white routes (Erick's was all 8 whites and Greg's was 7 whites). Amazingly, btw, they both completed those routes at the same time which means they were both getting the white cards they needed at the same time during the game.

Anyway, with both of them playing early long routes and being very concentrated in white, I figured a bums rush to the endgame would catch them hanging. So, I started pushing the carriages by using the Cartwright whenever possible. Next thing you know, I've got my 6 carriage and they're both just picking up the 5.

The game is so tactical. You have to be fluid with your routes (looking to make lemonade out of lemons). You need to know when you can take your time lapping up little points here and there or when it's safe to play a long route (early long routes always set you back in carriages, so you need a plan to get back up to speed).

It's so strange I'm still not sick of this game.

Okay, finally, the mustard is a little bit off the hot dog on this one.

I still really like it, but I am much less enthused about the 3-player game. With 4-5, I'm still into it, just not as ass-over-teakettle about it as I was.

Although, I think the game really needs 4-5 players who know it well. The 3 of us were on our 1st, 2nd, and 3rd games of it respectively. So, each game I've played it has been a teaching game and there are a lot of subtleties that come to life with experience.

Don't get me wrong, I still like it a lot. I just moved my rating from an 8 to a still-respectable 7.

I am pretty sure Erick and Oz were among those playing this when I left last night. I would like to know more about this one, since I usually like Feld.
