I got ahold of an early copy when the game was totally fresh and in the cult of the new. I had no intentions of getting rid of it because I loved it from the first play.

He wanted it. And I quickly learned that when he wants something, he gets after it. He made me a trade offer I couldn't refuse, and I just decided to wait until Z-Man brought it stateside.

Then, a miraculous series of events happened, and I don't remember exactly how it happened. But I was able to purchase a Pearl Games edition only a few weeks later.

I still have my second copy with no plans of trading it away.

One of my favorite games.

The first time I owned it, I had a rough night trying to work through the rule book. Man that thing is the perfect example of a mess in writing. It's like the editor(s) took all the information needed to know the game, segmented it into small sections, tossed all those segments into the air, and put them in the order they fell. I can't, for the life of me, understand any logical explanation for the (lack of) organization in that little book.

So after a miserable night of trying to figure it out, I traded it away.

Then, a year or so later, I was looking for a small-box soloable game. I decided to give it another try because it's reasonably priced, and I thought that with the extra experience I had as a gamer I should be able to handle the rules better than before.

I did, a little. The rulebook was still mind-blowing bad. But I managed to understand things and get in a play or two. But I learned quickly that I don't like rules that require you to manage several characters at once (I might be okay with 2, but not 3+).

I traded it away a second time. I won't try to convince myself about this one again.

The first time I owned it, I played it a ton with my family and friends. I think it's a great game to pull out around Halloween time. But when it's not October, there are better games to play for the hidden-identity fix ( hello, The Resistance: Avalon).

I eventually traded it away.

But then, last year, I was going to a Halloween party and my friends told me to bring a game that would work well for a large group that was Halloween appropriate. I wanted to please, so I ran out and bought a copy at my FLGS.

A couple months ago, my nephew was choosing the game. He chose Shadow Hunters. We played a quick session, and he won. Afterwards, he said, "This is my favorite game of all time!" I was blown away that someone could love it so much. So I figured the only right thing to do was give it to him on the spot. And I did.

Owned it twice. Don't currently own it. It's a good game for exactly one month out of every year.

When I bought it the first time, I just didn't understand what kind of game it was. I thought I was getting a strategy game with a good theme. So I was disappointed. I traded it away for something else I wanted.

Then later, when I learned how the game should be approached--that is, as a B-grade horror simulation with a touch of strategy--, I discovered the fun there is in the game. So I picked it up again.

I had success using it as an English-teaching tool to kids in Guatemala. It worked surprisingly well for that and they all loved it.

I still have it, and like it for the right settings.

I owned the JKLM version and fell in love with it. After that I was on a constant search for the original edition. I eventually found the right offer and got one signed by M. Wallace.

I love this game. It packs more difficult decisions into a quick-playing game than any other I know. Very fun and tense economic game. Glad to have owned it twice.

My AstroNuts copy needed pieces. So I bought another copy of Nautilus after selling the one that I had. Then in they went. And for the low, low prices of 5 bucks I could then make my Nautilus copy that I stole the pieces from complete. The game is okay. Probably a lot better with more than 2 players. I don't think that I like it a whole lot. Which hurts because I love the theme and the bits, and even the look of the board. I like the fantasy that it takes me too, but I do not like the gameplay and wish for something different.

This isn't a particularly interesting story, but I think this was the first game that my wife was so excited about, that we created our own print-n-play version. Then bought the game when it finally came out. It still sees a lot of table time as a good quick filler.

This was one of the first games I ever owned, and the one time we played it was glorious and engaging. It was so fantastic, yet it took about three and a half hours to go through. After a few months went by of it sitting on my shelf, unplayed, I started to get the itch that only a new game could alleviate. I scanned my collection and eventually came to terms with the fact that FoD probably wouldn't get played very often, so off it went.

I immediately had traders remorse (a possible idea for another geeklist?? It's MINE!) and regretted the decision to move it. Like a new car where once you own it you seem to see it EVERYWHERE, the second I traded FoD away it just showed up in every thread/geeklist/head of lettuce at the grocery store.

...It must be mine again...

Back when I got it the first time it was still in print and could be readily purchased anywhere vampire media was sold (not really). After I foolishly traded it away it disappeared as if everybody held a mirror up to their copies!

I wept.

Fast forward a year or so and I'm randomly at my FLGS browsing their stock when out of the corner of my eye I spot it. "IT SHALL BE MINE!" I exclaim as I triumphantly hold it over my head as if it were the last piece of the tri-force and I had just murdered Ganon to get it.

I go to pay for it and BAM! card declined...

The end.

So back a year or so ago I really started getting into dice games. I made a large order and got Alea Iacta Est, King of Tokyo, Quarriors!, and Dice Town.

I played all of them, LOVED KoT, REALLY LIKED Alea Iacta Est, felt "eh" about Dice Town, and HATED Quarriors.

A few months after I had the game, it became hard to find (I also had the expansion) and I took advantage of its trade value and scored a couple of sweet games which I still have and love. I wasn't immediately upset that I traded Dice Town, tho I probably should have given it a few more tries. It just underwhelmed me a ton. That being said I always kind of wanted it again, but not really, but I did, but I didn't, but I wanted it, but nah I didn't care, but sort of I did, but whatever, you know?

So along comes a math trade. I put up Memoir '44 in the trade, and I have about six thousand games I said I would trade for it. ONE of those, and probably the last one I checked, was a copy of Dice Town. Guess what trade happened?

You send Memoir '44 to Sweettrademaker
You received Dice Town from lolbetyadidn'tthinkthatwouldhappensucker!

(facepalm)

Why did I bother putting Dice Town as a game I wanted? Read the last sentence of two paragraphs above.

I seriously had about a hundred other games I listed that I wanted to trade for Memoir, with multiples of each one, and only ONE of Dice Town.

So I got it and played it again thinking "Hey maybe this is a blessing in disguise!"

Nope. It was pretty weak.

Traded away a week later.

.............I kind of want it again..........but I don't............

We played it a few times over the years, but Mike didn't game with us as often, and it got stale as a three player game, so I traded it to

Steph became one of our best gaming buddies over the next few years.

In the last year I bought a Among the Stars as a thank you present for Gary, as he has helped me with a few projects around the house (he's much handier than I am). We played it twice and since he didn't care too much for it, he asked me to get a copy of Puerto Rico and trade it to him for AtS. I did just that.

So now I have two friends who I have traded PR to, and I see no reason to buy it again.

Played the heck out of it, so I sold it off (along with two expansions).

I moved halfway across country and, after enough time had passed, suddenly had the urge to play it again and wanted it in my collection again. Bought it used for a good deal, though I still haven't played it yet.

And I still want to reacquire all the available expansions now.

I got my first copy in 1962, and we played it a lot as kids.

While I was in the Army ('73-'76), my mom gave most of my old games away (probably yard sales or church bazaars.) Fortunately, my wargames remained.

Around 1999, my wife and I discovered eurogames, and pondering on my old game collection, it seemed to me that Square Mile was very euro-ish -- decades ahead of its time.

About 4-5 years ago, I mentioned it on BGG that I was in the market to buy a copy, and Ben Baldanza was kind of enough to sell me a used but excellent condition copy at a very reasonable price.

That second acquisition has joined hundreds of other games in our collection.

Among other games that I had once owned as a kid in the '60s and reacquired in the '90s for our children:

Mouse Trap

Clue

Sorry

The Game of LIFE

Lie Detector

Game of the States

I don't have any interesting or sexy story. shake

But I sold Through the Ages just because of the language. I bought one copy in french, but I haven't played it and so I sold it. Thereafter I bought an english edition to can play it with my group.

Carson City

Well, I don't like the 1st edition box. When I compared the two boxes decided to buy the 2nd edition. So I sold one and bought other!

Middle-Earth Quest

Two years ago I was planning to play for the first time in a brazilian game convention. A fan saw the game and offered R$ 300,00 a few more than U$ 150,00... so the decision was easy and I sold the game at same moment! One month later I bought the game again and won some money in the transaction.

Saboteur

I don`t know I sold it, but I sold. So I missed the game and bought again!

Galaxy Trucker

I sold this one and bought the Anniversary Edition. No mysteries or interesting stories

Used to play this, Uno, and Skip-Bo - albeit horribly incorrectly - with my late grandmother back in the '90s.

Technically, she owned them, and then I got updated copies of all three in the past year (usually it was from Amazon... I needed an extra $5 item to hit free shipping, and these fit the bill nicely).

Uno is about what I remember. Skip-Bo isn't terribly exciting. Phase 10 isn't awful, but it's pretty mindless to play as designed (not many interesting decisions).

Technically still waiting for my friend to get my replacement copy.

A few months ago, I was asked by a friend to run some tournament games at a one-day min-con. As a "thank you," I got to pick something from the prize table at the end of the night. I had heard of Trans America, and this caught my eye, especially as it was shrink-wrapped and brand new. What a find!

I played with my fiance the next night for a good hour and a half (it took quite a while to finish; we only fell short by 1 city a lot of the time, tended to alternate wins, and you need the score to drop -13 for a full-blown winner). I bagged up all the components nicely. Everything was all set.

It turns out the set was never supposed to be donated to the prize table - it was the personal copy of the president of the organzation running to the con, and someone had mistakenly walked off with it, thinking it was a donation. Although I didn't have to, I gave it back as a good-faith gesture; my friend promised he'd pick me up another copy when he could find one.

Probably my favorite "light" game, and one that's making me consider look at other, more complicated train games.

24. Board Game: Lord of the Rings [Average Rating:6.76 Overall Rank:760]
Happily owned this game, complete with Friends & Foes and Sauron expansions all packed into a single box.

Unfortunately, during a move across the country, space/weight were at a premium and my board game collection was already pushing the limit. Ended up donating the game to a co-worker who was a big Lord of the Rings fan. He (apparently) has played it with his family and they all enjoyed the game, so that's a win. But I eventually ended up replacing it in my own collection.

Not the best co-op game nor the best use of LotR license... but a landmark title with beautiful artwork, and still fun to play.

Other games that I've owned more than once:
* StreetSoccer - Sold it, then almost immediately regretted the decision as I've yet to play a more enjoyable sports-themed game. A year later bought it back, and am currently the proud owner of two copies of this out-of-print gem.
* Razzia! - Got great mileage from this game with my wife, but eventually traded it for something different. Replaced my copy a few years later and it's still just as fun as ever.

Would you believe -4- copies?

Let's review...

1977, high school. Bought it when it 1st came out, before GEVs were Nerfed, paper map, counters you cut yourself. Played lots. Wrote many many handwritten (this was before home computers) fan letters to Metagaming about Ogre. Game lost, disposed of, vanished some time in college.

Late 80s, early 90s. Found in FLGS. Ogre + GEV. Interesting use of videocassette case. While I was at it, bought Shockwave, Ogre Reinforcement Pack, and Ogre Battlefields. Still have non die-cut counters. Discovered that Steve Jackson actually paid attention to all those high school fan letters because I am mentioned in the acknowledgements. Traded entire collection away for Phantom Leader when Kickstarter campaign for Designer Edition (aka Ogre 6e) began.

Nov 2013, the Beast arrives a year late. This is the most massive, overbuilt boardgame I have ever seen. 28 pounds. 5 mounted maps. 1000+ counters. Not 1, but 3, custom counter trays. 3D Ogres. Includes Ogre, GEV maps, parts of Shockwave and Battlefields. I am still mentioned in the acknowledgments on p2. I also have my name on the box, once for being a KS backer, once for being a member of Black Rose mercenary regiment (side campaign run on BGG-- for $64 you could name a unit, naturally I did this-- see my avatar).

Nov 2013. One of the stretch goals for the Ogre KS campaign was to reprint the original 1977 microgame. Included at certain levels of KS support (which I did, need something for when I don't want to lug 28 pound box around), will be sold separately after KS shipments are finished.
