Last Tuesday was election day, and my kids also had the day off from school. I took the day off, and we ended up playing a lot of games. Maybe we can call it Election-con, and who knows, maybe we'll make it a tradition!

We don't currently have any co-ops in our rotation, and this is the latest candidate. Because they were out of school the next day, we had some extra time in the evening.

We didn't get to finish, but we got pretty much owned. We played the first scenario, and of 3 characters, 2 were "bleeding out" and the third was nowhere nearby and far away from the objective.

My oldest son (11) hates co-ops, but he was slightly interested, since he recognized the name from the video game. In the end, he concluded, "The video game is much better." My youngest son (8) was the real target of this game. He seemed to like it well enough, though neither of us know squat about GoW.

My youngest played this when he got up. For some reason, the TV remote was nowhere to be found... whistle

I thought this counted as a game, but this is actually the named game by BGG rules of what is not a game. Anyway, it's a good puzzle. Good enough that we actually got the game due to playing the app.

My youngest and I tried this game again. As newly-minted veterans of the Locust war, we thought we might fare better.

Once again we tried the first scenario. (The first is the easiest, right?)

This time, we completed the first objective - closed the emergence hole - and had only one locust on the map at that time. Things were looking good!

Unfortunately, 2 consecutive bad AI draws of drone attacks enabled that one drone to chase me down in the middle hallway, where there's no defensive cover. It knocked me out.

My son's guy is up at the top, having just closed the emergence hole. A final set of 2 boomers and 2 wretches popped out, and if you defeat them, you win the scenario. Alas, 2 consecutive bad AI draws of boomer attacks, with me wasting my turn dragging myself around uselessly, means they were all over my son, and he went down. Once again, we lost.

This game might go up for sale. I can tell if my son likes a game bec he will bug me to play it over and over again. This one, I've suggested a couple times since then, and each time he says, "Maybe."

After the longish game of Gears of War, we went out to learn to ride a bike. The 5 yo next door is riding his bike now, so it doesn't look good that my 8 yo is still on training wheels.

It went quite well, and by the end of a couple hours, he was whizzing along. He can start on his own (eventually), stay up (mostly), but still has some trouble with sharp turns and stopping (of course). All in all, a big success.
cool

I also remembered to vote in the midst of this.

I took a nap and my youngest son solo'd the Cataclysm as the Undead. He won it by knocking out Master of the Hunt, which left no more events to draw, which wins the game. He is quite good with the the Daqan and Waiqar factions.

This game gets an A++++ from me. thumbsup Any game that my son will play by himself makes me feel good about his future as a gamer. And behind For Sale, this is by far the next best value game (price / plays) in our collection.

I have the Oath and Anvil expansion hiding in the closet, probably a Christmas present. I told him I was waiting to find it for a good price (found it new for $8!!!!), and he asks me about it about once a week.

My older son had set up an excellent Heroscape map on the floor while
Gears of War was going on. I had just recently, finally, picked up a Road to Forgotten Forest on ebay, so that piqued his interest. I was still napping, so my 2 sons played head-to-head.

Apparently McDirk and his clan were the big winners of this one, carrying my older son to victory.

The hilarious part is that they had this beautiful map with the tricky bridges in the middle and trees and ruins providing cover. Then, they both decided to start in the corners of the same side, so the bridges, ice, or lava sections never saw any battle. laugh

A+++++ to Heroscape: any game that my older son will play (he's gone gone gone for video games), plus any game my two sons will play without me just flat out means it's a great game. There are only a handful of games in the world that my sons will play without me, and this may be the only one other than LotR: Confrontation that aren't primarily card games.

As a side note, I will say that Forgotten Forest seems like the best terrain expansion. It adds a lot more to the game than the volcano or even the fortress. I still like the ice terrain / glaciers quite a bit.

Just before bedtime, my youngest and I squeezed in a game of Revolver. (Someone scheduled soccer practice in the middle of our mini-con, which took up most of the evening!)

As the bad guys, I derailed the train, wiped out a huge contingent of deputies and good guys there, and had saved a big hand to rescue my remaining gang members. It might have been the first time I won this game.

I like this game for its western theme. It seems surprising there aren't more of those. Then again, the wife refuses to even look at it because of its theme, so maybe there's something to that.

Sadly, I'm not sure this is a keeper for long, as my youngest only seems to want to play when he's trying to delay bedtime.

Equally sad, this was the end of the "con". I tried to get my wife to play a game with me, but we had just played Ticket to Ride a couple days before, so that one was out, and that's pretty much the go-to game for her.
