Highlights of games played 11/5-11/11:

Continuing through the new releases, with a few more winners identified...

Isegrim (Joe=1) - decent but uninspiring memory game

Käse Würfeln (Joe=1) - too long a dice game for what it does

Loreley (Joe=2) - a real surprise; I traded for it because (1) it's a Rudi Hoffmann game which (2) was published by Pelikan. It looked too abstract and Ludo-like to be likely to hit home with me. But - it did; we enjoyed it enough to immediately play a second time. Not _new_, but new to me, and definitely a WINNER

Artifact (Joe=1) - a poor rule book detracts from this simple and reasonably elegant game. I need to try it a second time, but I suspect it doesn't stick.

Kohle & Kolonie (Joe=2) - even with a full complement of five players, worked very well; I believe I can now safely call this a WINNER

Patronize (Joe=1) - I need to play this again; it has promise, but it didn't really impress the first time out.

Händler der Karibik (Joe=1) - I wasn't expecting much from this, and was pleasantly surprised. I still need to play again, but it's got a better chance with me than I expected

1846: The Race for the Midwest (Joe=147) - it was fun to play this with a different group

Russian Railroads (Joe=6) - moved up to a 9 rating for me (already declared a winner)

Downtown (Joe=1) - might be my biggest disappointment, of the games I bought in Essen. Just didn't really work, and definitely wasn't interesting enough to play through

Bluff in Zoo (Joe=2) - fun little game; not sure where it ends up, but for now it's going to collect some plays

L'Aéropostale (Joe=2) - the rules make the rules for Artifact look clean and clear. Unfortunately, what's hiding beneath the rules is a simple, lighter game, which is actually kind of fun - but desperately, desperately in need of further development. As it is, it's too complex to teach due to niggly rules that often aren't necessary for what you get out of it

Koryŏ (Joe=4) - a very nice little filler, which is definitely sticking around WINNER

Café Melange (Joe=2) - the game I've been waiting for Stephan Riedel to follow up Old Town with. Good, clear game, with a good theme and a very different feel from his other proof games, even if it builds on the same mechanism WINNER

Nauticus (Joe=2) - it's been a while since one of Kramer's designs really struck home with me; this one does WINNER

BancoBanco (Joe=2) - a second play with the right rules was better - but not enough better

Gear & Piston (Joe=2) - a nice balance; this is really a filler game, but with a good theme and enough going on to stick WINNER

Eggs of Ostrich (Joe=3) - I wasn't sure about this - actually, I'm still not sure about exactly where it sits for me, but I think it has a niche WINNER

AttrAction (Joe=1) - after seeing this demoed in Essen, I finally got to play. Fun, but not the kind of game I need to own

Strajk! Skok do wolności (Joe=1) - a deckbuilding game - themed around Lech Walesa. As a deckbuilding game, it has limitations - there are only nine types of cards (only 8 of which go into your deck). But - it's perfect. Not a perfect game, but a bizarrely wonderful creation, which will be fun to pull out on occasion. Oh, and quick enough to not outstay its welcome WINNER

Steam Park (Joe=1) - I want to like this game. Actually, I _do_ like this game. But - I'm not convinced I need this game, which is a disappointment. If the game can be played in 30 minutes, it's a fine game, and a keeper. If it keeps taking an hour, it's too long for what it offers. Very pretty, in any event

For Shane, we finally got this to the table. It has a lot of working parts. It is badly in need of a player aid. Some of the chits are tiny (although not as tiny as in Bremerhaven). Somewhat fiddly but not too bad.

That being said, the games works pretty smoothly. Point salad again (I feel like a boardgame vegetarian!) but it has some interesting mechanisms like secondary actions. If you build on one of the action spaces and another player uses the spot in the future you gain a secondary action. The variable market grid is also interesting but doesn't quite feel entirely new. The action board grid is also variable from turn to turn.

Speaking of Bremerhaven...it has blind bidding, but like Aladdin's Dragons the numbers available to bid with are limited so I didn't mind it too much. I liked it. The game is a pretty smooth pick up and deliver with a nice timing mechanism. I enjoyed the game. It's important to remember your dock has to have enough bollards to receive a ship. Some of the bits are really tiny. If you don't go into this game expecting the second coming of Le Havre you'll be ok.

Concordia has a deck building mechanism similar to Lewis & Clark. That being said it felt much less thematic and more dry to me. I think it's a nice departure from the rondel for Gerdts. Plays fairly quickly.

Adaman (I had lots of sitting around time)

4
Roll Through the Ages: The Bronze Age

2
Cribbage
Triumvirate

At the Gates of Loyang
Pauntel's Got Talent
Race for the Galaxy

I chose RftG as my entry because I've set an official goal of 100 plays by next year. It should be doable since it is one of my wife's favorites. The fact that she likes it so much is proof of the concept that once you learn the icons the game is very very good. She originally hated it because of the icons but I eased her learning with San Juan, which taught her some of the basic concepts of the game.

Another highlight was playing with my friend over happy hour. We played Triumvirate and then Pauntel's Got Talent, a decktet game of my design based on Triumvirate, and compared and contrasted them afterward. I still enjoy PGT better because of the scoring structure (all suits score points vs. one winning suit) but it hasn't been tested nearly enough to work out the kinks. In any case I do enjoy playing it so it's nice to have a willing opponent.

Games Played (11/3 - 11/9)

Carcassonne: Hunters and Gatherers x1
I don't actually remember anything about this game. Hmmmm....maybe I should give Hunters and Gatherers a rest for a bit.

Combat Commander: Europe x1
This was probably round 2 of my VASSAL tourney. This time my opponent was in England. I ended up resigning (I don't usually do that no matter how dire, but it was just slow going online that day, and my wife was being very patient.) Turns out that opponent won our group (there are two groups) for the preliminary rounds. The top 4 from each group advanced to a single elimination format. After the 3rd game of the preliminary round, the standings were assessed. I won't spoil the surprise, and will announce my results as they occurred. (At this point I was 1-1.)

Here I Stand x1
This was me calling it on a long/slow PBEM game where we ultimately decided the Pope had quit on us. I may have logged this prematurely as it appears not that a replacement player has been found.

Thunderstone x1
The theme of this week was me not playing any games face to face. Here was a Yucata game that I lost badly.
