Everybody on BGG seems to love mechanics in board games. However, I have a hard time finding games with mechanics that I really like.

I started with some games which have awesome mechanics - feel free to add more if you come up with additional ones.

1. Board Game: Forbidden Desert [Average Rating:7.24 Overall Rank:263]
This is one of my favourites: The players fix a broken vessel with treasures that have to be dug out of a desert. Every player controls a different mechanic and therefore has some quite unique ways to influence the game.

2. Board Game: Formula D [Average Rating:7.05 Overall Rank:432]
This is a fast racing game full of thrill and tension. You can try to use high gears in order to outrace your opponents, but if you push your luck too hard your car will get damaged. There are some mechanics to fix these kinds of problems though: Just drive into a pit stop and you will get some new brakes and tires.

3. Board Game: Through the Ages: A Story of Civilization [Average Rating:8.03 Overall Rank:26]
I was contemplating a lot if I should add this one to the list. I decided for it, basically because Newton really adds some classical mechanics to the experience.

4. Board Game: RoboRally [Average Rating:7.12 Overall Rank:336]
A fun and quick and mean racing game where you can damage your opponents in a variety of ways, for example by shooting lasers at them. Some spaces on the board show a wrench where you can trigger the game's mechanics to fix your robot.

5. Board Game: Saboteur [Average Rating:6.62 Overall Rank:854] [Average Rating:6.62 Unranked]
This is a neat and tiny filler where players can block each other by breaking a mine cart, lamp or pickaxe of another player, preventing him from digging a tunnel. Thankfully repair cards can be played by any player; this mechanic fixes the broken tool.

I have to admit that I have neither played this game nor do I know a lot about it, but it seems to meet the criterion for this list quite well.

In this nostalgic and fun card game, players drive through France trying to be the first to travel 1000 kilometers. If another driver plays an accident card on you, you'll need to find a mechanic to make the necessary reparations.

This is a clever game in that it uses aging and death as a key mechanic to playing the game as well as winning!

Every action cost "time" (as well as a number of various resources and whatnot), and once your worker has lived a full, long life, it dies, scoring potential points. Also, your workers are numbered according to generations, so there is a certain amount of overlap and planning and timing as to when or how fast you kill them off.

The "wake-up" mechanic is a first, I think.

Players place their worker to get up at various times in the morning. The earlier they wake up, the more choices they get (should they *need* to be first somewhere) but they pay through the nose. Eventually, you lose a worker if you do this too often.

On the other hand, the later you wake up, the more workers you have because word gets out that you are an easy boss and your workers can "sleep in". However, you get sloppy seconds and the market and everywhere else on the board.

Players are trying to cooperatively lay down sequences of numbered cards in order to score points based on a sliding scale.

The catch: your cards are facing away from you. So, in essence, everyone can see everyone else's cards except their own. You have to carefully give clues to players about their hand without running out of clues, or having players play a card incorrectly.

What a clever concept, it almost seems gimmicky it's ridiculous it hasn't been done before.

A great blending of card play tied to board play.

In each of 12 rounds, players bid cards from one of the suits in their hands to win tokens and place palaces on the board. Unlike poker, when a player 'withdraws' (folds), he/she may win a token if the number of the specific symbol represented on his cards is more than the opponents have played.

I remember there was one building that allowed to repair another destroyed building. Or maybe it was cemetery to get the other building back from dead.

This is a token placeholder for two things I love in games: the multipurpose usage of cards found typically in CDGs and simultaneous action selection.
