Well, in real life, I am not someone who ever stops talking, really. But when I am hosting the Beehive, it isn't easy to think of a topic to start; normally, things just materialize, but they don't necessarily do here. I had been thinking about Essen which was, of course, a major event for me two weeks ago, but that was already covered last week.

So I will go for something very simple first: Tell us about your weekend. Anything interesting happening? Because to me, it did...

The play that we went to was "The Gruffalo" (what an appropriate game title for my experiences - The Gruffalo: Everything will be fine!). I dearly love this fantastic children's book, and I was wondering how it would be presented in a play. Well, I cannot praise the theater troupe enough for their interpretation. A regular actor was set up as the Gruffalo with clothes pins. And how perfect that worked! Stunning. Really creative ideas.

So here's my question: Do you know the modern classic children's book "The Gruffalo"? And in what ways do your children's books differ from what you read as a child? There were some controversies in Germany recently about racist (and other) undertones in popular books from the current parents' generation's books, such as Pippi Longstocking and so on. While every generation loves their classics, parents should move on and acknowledge that modern books are often better or at least, well, more modern. So tell us about literature!

I don't know a good third topic right now, so I will leave it at two for now. I might add something later. Or not. Hope nobody minds! So onward to my playlist:

I had a good gaming week for sure. Not only could I play for money (I ran a gaming night for the students of our language school during my working hours - played games are in italics), but I could also try out some new games (bold), including two Essen novelties, Wooolf and Mayday!Mayday! The two of them are somewhat similar in concept. While Wooolf! has the more interesting deduction mechanisms, Mayday! Mayday! was more interactive and caused more laughs, so I rate it slightly higher. But both are fun games for larger groups (we played with seven). Bunny Bunny Moose Moose fell flat with us, though.
There is still some unplayed Essen loot, but I am eager to try more!

7 x Love Letter
2 x Funny Bunny
2 x Kakerlakenpoker
2 x Mayday!Mayday!
2 x Piece o' Cake
2 x Playmobil Soccer Match
2 x Wooolf!!
1 x Ahoy
1 x Bunny Bunny Moose Moose
1 x Fauna
1 x Koffer packen
1 x Memory
1 x Piratenbillard
1 x Stake Your Claim

We used the aliens for the first time this week. Not as much of an extra complication as I thought they might be, so we got on fine. Sadly all of the three voyages were milk runs, with hardly any pirates, meteors or anything interesting at all. I think I was the only one who lost any bits of my ship at all (due to sabotage) in the entire game!

We also played

The Great Dalmuti (Matthew had been asking to play this for several days, we finally managed it on Sunday afternoon)
Space Beans
Nur die Ziege zählt (known by us as the goat game)
It Happens..
Ticket to Ride: Europe
Lost Cities
Starship Merchants

Rokoko arrived on Saturday and got two "learning game" plays on Sunday night. Divided the kids up so that we could learn it as a three-player game. I have had enough experience now to know better than to teach a brand new game to my kids at the highest player count. The potential for an excruciatingly long, fun-killing first play is high in that scenario--possibly ruining the game for my kids going forward.

It was the right call. This is a long-playing game! Both the teaching sessions (Me, Antony & Holiday first, Me, Antony and Donte second) ran two-and-a-half hours. That's too long as a rule in the Saccenti home.

We will be quicker next time of course, but I think this is a 90-minute game only under particular conditions. Enough about the length.

I liked it; the kids liked it too. A really great theme. You are a top fashion-designer in the center of the fashion universe in 18th-century France. It is an area majority game at the most basic: you are looking to get exposure for your designs by attiring the elite guests at an upcoming palace ball. There are a couple other ways to gain exposure as well. The game has a bit of a deck-building element as well; this could have been done a bit more in my opinion: I like that game mechanic a lot.

Will need more plays to be sure that the decisions you make along the way are as important to your success in the game as the time it takes to make them. That balance is important to me. I enjoyed the decisions in the game, but I was worried that I outscored Donte in our game, even though to my eye he outplayed me. So this needs watching. I need to figure out what I did right, in other words. In the meantime, this beautiful-looking title rates my Game-of-the-Week.

4x |9| Race for the Galaxy
3x |9| 7 Wonders
2x -7- Bruges: Very close to admitting this game into my Top Twenty. The designer's decision to amend the "Engraver" card was a wise one.
2x -10- Dominion
2x -8- Ivanhoe
2x -7- Rokoko
1x -7- Android: Netrunner
1x -8- Carcassonne
1x -7- Chicken Cha Cha Cha
1x -6- Eight-Minute Empire: An entire empire. Eight minutes. What's not to love?
1x -4- Formula D
1x -7- Glory to Rome
1x -7- Guillotine: As long as it is played rarely, this is a favorite.
1x -5- Gulo Gulo
1x -5- La Boca
1x -8- Love Letter
1x -7- Stone Age
1x -8- Yspahan

Games, games and more games!

A full weekend of gaming, plus the odd game midweek. My daughter discovered a new game she liked - Bloody Legacy - from "helping" my friend play, and then demanded to play it two more times before bed! We also tried Space Crusade, which we picked up at a car boot sale with lots of expansions years ago but haven't played - I don't think we were missing much - we had hoped for another HeroQuest variant, but it wasn't nearly as enjoyable.

Gaming with other adults:

34 x Magic the Gathering
4 x Boku
2 x The City
2 x Core Worlds

1 x Bloody Legacy, 7 Wonders, Articulate, Ascension, Betrayal at House on the Hill, Boggle, Burn Rate, Carcassonne, Cities and Knights of Catan, Cutthroat Caverns, Dominion (Prosperity), Egizia, Esacalation, Evo, Innovation, King of Tokyo, Liar's Dice, Lords of Waterdeep, Mastermind, Metro, Pandemic, Quarriors, Race for the Galaxy, Rage, The Resistance, RoboRally, Space Crusade , Stone Age, Take it Easy, Taxi, Tension, Tichu, Time's Up Title Recall, Well you Bowled, Royal Turf, Yes!No!Game

Gaming with my children:

2 x Bloody Legacy (my daughter's new favourite!)

1 x Love Letter, Magic Cauldron

I think the only games we got to play this week were at the family game day we hosted last weekend. With the one friend of my son’s who came with this mother, we played PitchCar Mini & Forbidden Island. Then they played Forbidden Desert, while I played a bunch of little kids HABA games with my daughter: Clumsy Witch, Käpt'n Kuck, Knuckling Knights, and Rhino Hero.

Maybe I’ll have better luck this week!
