Following on the steps of the dice tower, here are my top 10 underrated games.

My criteria was: The game must be ranked over 1000, and my difference with the average rating must be high (over 2.0) points.

I do rate my games using the standard BGG ranking, with a couple exceptions; Games that my wife enjoys get ranked high. A 9 is almost guaranteed to be liked by both of us. A 10 is a game that I don't care what other think, whether I play it enough times or not, etc ... this is the type of game I just love for what it is.

Feel free to add your own!

I love games that allow me to act and play silly roles, and I think this is the best. I had a bit of a sad instance where I figured out that it is not for everyone, but I still love the game despite that. I would jump at the opportunity to play this with anyone that is cool with getting hit on the head with a blow up cave man club!

For whatever reason, this silly two player trick tacking game was a great success with me and my wife. I have not played it in a while, but I would jump at the opportunity to do so. Where most trick taking games really don't work well (or at all) with two, this one seems to do just fine and I like that. There is a high level of uncertainty due to some of the rules, and the inclusion of three "special" cards that allow you to alter the game rules gives this one the variability that both my wife and me appreciate in a game.

I am pretty sure this game ranking is due to a bad combo of subpar components (some of the most useless and tiny counters ever!) and a really poor manual.

The first was easy to fix with crystal stones and other little things, and the second was addressed thanks to the geek and the amazing video by the great Undead Viking.

Once you address these, this is a really great game of chase, where the players feel constantly stalked by the wolves, and frantically search around for their lost friends and the way out. Nights are bad and people will get hurt, possibly end up joining the baddies team! The game plays long but it feels like nothing. One great experience that really manages to recreate the ambiance of those slasher movies of old.

If I want to do a brain burn simultaneous puzzle session, this is my go to. Everyone in my family likes this very much, and it has been one of our favorite games to play together. There is some need to clarify a couple rules, but one can find those discussed in the game forums. I even wrote a review for the game. The game can be tailored to many levels of difficulty, from relatively trivial to very, very hard. I can understand how this will not grab people attention, but to us one of our favorite acquisitions.

My wife and me both are frantic die rollers. We love dice, and particularly custom dice. This little game is nothing more than a funny variant of Yahtzee, possibly even simpler, but it is great for that particular reason. Just roll and hope to get that coveted Cha-Cha-Cha set, or try and get a Tango going. Since the set selection is done behind curtains, and one has two sets of dances, deciding which order to place them is key, and that double-think is what sets this one apart from similar light games. Not a gamers game, it is perfect for my light play cravings, particularly good for late night when euros are not well received.

I am quite sure this one is ranked low because of the mix of theme and general unavailability.

"Jane Austen - The Board Game", this overlooked jewel is a pretty good light worker placement game with a very high likelihood of interaction. The theme is very well integrated with the mechanisms used, and the artwork is just perfect for the type of game this is.

I would put it along there with Langfinger as being one of the best worker placement gateways out there.

This little card game in which you are essentially trying to build a little town with buildings and people while dealing with constant monsters and villain attacks, is the perfect type of light game where there is a good deal of luck, but enough illusion of control to have a good time without burning many brain cells. The artwork is really pretty and the scoring favors specific goals which allow players to diversify their strategies. Works really well with two players which is always a plus for me.

This silly push your luck game for two is a really neat thing. Very old mechanics and absolutely nothing more than luck, it has that lightness and silliness acting on its favor. Just pull it out, roll dice and decide whether to move your pieces, push the other player back and when to stop. Simple, quick and sweet. A throwback, but one I enjoy very much.

We have a soft spot for kid games, and though they are not our bread and butter, we play them on occasion, usually as fillers or to end a game session on a lighter note.

This game is a dexterity game to play in the dark. You are trying to get pieces of garlic out of the vampires castle. The pieces are fluorescent, and to move them out you use a same polarity magnets on a rod and the playing piece. Maneuvering the pieces out of the castle is tricky as there are holes all over the board. Pretty neat, with some dexterity requirement and light enough to play with any kid, yet intensive enough for grown ups to play among themselves and have a good time! The type of game that shows me how lame were the kid board games I grew up with.

The best simulation I have seen of the hardships that navigators, explorers and conquistadors suffered during the time of the discovery of the Americas. At the core, this is a big race game for points. There are multiple ways to go about things, and a lot of options on what to pursue. The gaming mechanics are really simplistic and there is a ton of luck on every turn. Once can hedge the bets but just so much. Will I be able to circumnavigate the globe as Magellan did before my wife empties the mesoamerican treasures as Cortez did?

This is more an activity than a game, but one that really has gotten my attention and that of my wife, the kind of perfect game to play in a rainy afternoon.
