That said, I did enjoy two very full, satisfying days at BGG.Con. Plenty of of old friends, games, and good times all around. This year, I went 'structured' and mostly played pre-arranged games. The network and phone reception ranged from non-existent to horrid, to merely sucky. Heck, I ended up nick-naming the exhibit hall "Utah" coz it had no bars... Anyways, here is my list:

Stephen was new, so we stuck to just 1 power, but used all available powers, hazards, rewards. Dwayne used the mind to good effect, but Loser can mess with that a bit. I had fun w/ Schizoid, nerfed though he was from the original game. I chose '4 bases, fail to make a deal'. The key point was when I refreshed to an attack 20 and attack 40. This nerfed Mind, as when the power activated, I had no cards to 'read', so this was a blind as I could get him. I chose to go w/ the former, in the hopes of then getting a nearly auto-win w/ 40 to go to 4 bases. I had negotiates and quashes to manipulate any deals. I nearly pulled it off, except for nearly 15 points in reinforcements against me and Gary (who kicked in a +5). From there, I go pounded to losing my power (the best way to beat Schizoid).

Bob, Dwayne, and Gary shared the win. Byron had 4 bases and I limped in w/ 3. Still, it was a great game of cosmic, and thanks to Dwayne for organizing.

I was hurt early on, but not taking domination actions AND getting COMPLETELY shut out on coop scoring opportunities. I made a play for survivor, but Nathan nailed that down good. Still, I managed to establish decent position. At the end, I managed to get the final survivor bonuses and decent end game scoring. Still, it was too little, too late. That said, I haven't played DS in a year or so, so it was GREAT to get a play in, and the table was a fantastic group of gamers who were clearly passionate about this wonderful game.

This was a combo East/West epic using Mark's homebrew transcontinental rules. We used the transcontinental barons, but the main differences were opening the west once a 4 engine was built and having double sets of cubes and empty cities to make for surprisingly, a faster, yet epic game.

Money and shares were reconciled separately during income and end game, but money combined during turns and endgame.

I started in the midwest, and in general, got boxed out, but got some decent runs going. I really came into my own once the West opened up, cashing in the Tuscon bounty via Deming. From there, I staked claim to the Denver/Cheyenne region and then powered down to complete the Tuscon/Cheyenne line. I also cashed in the Passenger lines focused on the other lines such as Grand Junction-Oklahoma City, and Promontory to Omaha. I ended up 2nd best in the west and 3rd overall.

I really like Mark's rules and would like to try them again.

Pre-con, it was determined that most had played the base game and early expansions, and wanted to explore the PG-verse a bit more. Hence, we settled on the Korea map with its tight connections and split market.

Grant was located in the NE and the other Davids in the middle. Kel went down the SE coast and inland.

My plants:
03: 2O --> 1C and a build to 2 cities to stake out turf in the SW.
21: 2H --> 4C a solid mid-game plant to take me through Step 1 and into Step 2
I got boxed in a bit, and had to wait out the Step 2 stall. Once that passed, the race was on.

26: 2C --> 5C
31: 3C --> 6C
at this point, I had 15 Capacity on a 14 City endgame, so that was where I wanted to be. Bill and Dave K had board position and Bill had money. Kel ended the game, and Bill needed to build 6 cities to reach 15 capacity. Since he built before me, he was able to do that. I was 6 electro short of 15, so I ended up w/ the silver at 14 (and money).

Grant was located in the NE and the other Davids in the middle. Kel went down the SE coast and inland.

Another, taut to the wire finish for yet another epic experience. Same time, next year, David? I love playing w/ these guys and did I mention it was great to finally take in the Kel Experience?

More railways, this time w/ JanealK hosting a full complement on the Canada map. I've played this w/ 2 and 3, but never 5. Several were new to railways, but ChrisT was a pro. He won first player (I dropped out at 9 or so) and he cashed in the first delivery and a bounty. He also snagged the Quebec hotel where I was clearly going to deliver. My tycoon was Quebec to Iquilot, so I made sure to get that ferry and stake out turf. Diana got the St. Johns Quebec line and competed w/ me in the east. The others were all western based with lots of early mining. Diana also did the E-W line. I went the 'lines n bounties' route cashing in Repulse Bay and Goose Bay bounties and the Winnipeg-Repulse Bay line. I had a good supply of cubes for 3 and then 4 deliveries. Christ, alas, was able to plop a bunch of 5ers to seal the win. Diana snuck in at the end, so I ended up in 3rd. I do like this map and the challenges it offers.

and Michael Shinall who is not particularly active on BGG, but is well-known elsewhere through his CoolMiniOrNot work.

Alim borrowed my Collegium New Front Shooter and Richard a Whateleys Extended Family terror/puppet deck. My best competitive deck these days is also WEF, but I dislike mirror matches, so I went with a Work in Progress Sioux War Party shooter.

I used the Ante system, providing ante:

Alim (Collegium New Front): Box of Commons, Flock Starter, and Collegium mon-back
Richard (Whateleys Extended Family): Joker, Signed Joker, Agency Starter
MikeS (Blackjacks Rachel's Gang): Signed Austin Stoker, ?, ?
Davido (Sioux War Party): Jack's Left Shooter, Corky's Side Arm, Sioux mon-Back

Richard and I went on forever, and Mike and Alim played 2 games.

Mike-Alim (split) Mike won the Collegium mon-back and Alim won the signed Austin Stoker

I was able to grind down Richard (albeit he wasn't used to the deck), using Higher Learning to discard his shadow man. I also hid out in the Mission House or St. Martin's Chapel and buffed the studs w/ shaman boosters and the War Party ability. I took the signed Joker back.

I was happy to give out plenty of HEG swag: Greedy Jokers, One Ranger/One Riot, and Key to the City cards as well as plenty of leftover swag from the ante table. It's always great to play Doomtown, and I appreciate Mike's patience and formally welcoming Alim to Gomorra.

Still to come: summary of David-Mike

coming out w/ a game under his arm. Richard and I are long-time gaming compadres from the Central California/Bay Area convention scene, so I was more than happy to close out the con w/ him

Triassic Terror has bits to die for, straight from the kiddo's toy chest. The Dino-meeples and sculpts are just too much. Underneath the claws and fangs, however, beats the heart of an area majority game. No surprise as Richard and I clash most often over El Grande (Richard plays a lot of games well, El Grande just happens to be our main point of intersection). Three others joined us.

I got the 'put pieces on the board' part, but didn't fully get the power of 'scatter and move in' of the Raptors and other manipulation options until too late. Since Richard had a flight (and the weather was about to sock it big time), we only played through 6 turns and 2 scoring rounds.

Is this El Grande meets Ameritrash? not really? Is it fun? Yes. Would I play again? Certainly. Oh, and I was too fried to get other names and scores, but I lost by a big margin.

The travel to and from was de suk. My inbound made good time, and I happily skipped off the plane to baggage claim. Population Loser-ME. Ghosttown. Turns out the plane was diverted to Lubbock. gulp. Turns out you can't get through security w/o a boarding pass for a flight. My boarding pass was no longer valid. gulp. Turns out others were in the same boat. Got that sorted out and back on the plane. Hit big D around 11pm, get checked in, grab some food about 5 minutes before service stopped. Oh, and my Doomtown box o commons attracted the attention of TSA, and now had an inspection re-tape on it.

Outbound: Weather canceled/delayed a bunch of flights. My 5:30pm got bumped to 9:30 and then 10:30pm, but finally got off the ground and to Sacto around midnight and home c. 1 am. A small price to pay for two great days!
