While mucking about on the intarwebz last night, I came to a link which took me to a link which took me to a website that celebrates famous Belgians, named (naturally) Famous Belgians. This website maintains and updates a list of the current Top 10 Famous Belgians (utterly unscientific, based on internet voting - so you know, don't read too much into it). It is conveniently in English - no doubt to avoid exacerbating any linguistic wars between Belgians who speak Flemish and Belgians who speak French. It also interestingly includes zero politicians and zero members of the Belgian royal family, one athlete, one actress, two inventors, two musicians, three scientists, three artists, and one author (adds up to more than 10 because some qualify twice).

Now, I love lists (yes, really) and this was too good to pass up. The Top 10 are the Famous Belgian website's Top 10 list as of December 1.

#1 - EDDY MERCKX

This is a pretty good start to the list. Eddy Merckx (b. 1945, Meensel-Kiezegem, Brabant, Belgium) was a professional road bicycle racer, one of the best ever. He won the Tour de France and the Giro d'Italia five times each, was World Champion four times, and broke many bicycling records. His 19 victories in the "Five Monuments of Cycling" (one-day races; Milan-San Remo, Tour of Flanders, Paris-Roubaix, Liège–Bastogne–Liège, and the Giro di Lombardia) are the most ever (the next guy, Roger de Vlaeminck also of Belgium, had 11 wins). He retired from competitive bicycling in 1978 and opened a bicycle factory (Eddy Merckx Cycles).

Fun Fact: His parents sold off vowels to buy the young Eddy a new bicycle.

#2 - ADOLPHE SAX

Antoine-Josephe "Adolphe" Sax (1814-94) was a musician and a designer of musical instruments. His fame comes from having invented the instrument named for him - the saxophone. He invented various other instruments and parts of instruments (including a variation on the clarinet, which he played professionally) though his saxophone was his biggest hit.

Sax was born in Dinant in Wallonia (the predominantly French part of Belgium). Sax wasn't born in the Kingdom of Belgium though, because Belgium didn't come about as an independent state until 1830. Sax moved to Paris in 1841 and died there in 1894.

Fun Fact: Sax patented an improvement on the bass clarinet at age 20.

#3 - HERGÉ

Hergé is the pen-name for Georges Prosper Remi (1907-83), the famous cartoonist best known for The Adventure of Tintin series. Hergé (born in Etterbeek, Brussels) had other cartoons and was also a painter, but he will always be identified with Tintin, which has been translated into over 70 languages and has sold over 200 million copies.

Fun Fact: His pen name Hergé was the French pronunciation of his initials backwards (RG).

#4 - AUDREY HEPBURN

This one surprised me! I had no idea that Audrey Hepburn (1929-93) was born in Brussels - but she was. Her father (born in Austria-Hungary) was British and Austrian, her mother a Dutch aristocrat. Hepburn (née Audrey Kathleen Ruston) lived in Belgium and the Netherlands as a child (she was in Amsterdam during the entire German occupation) and spoke Dutch, French, English, Spanish, and Italian. She trained in ballet as a child and of course went on to great fame and fortune in movies (and as a fashion icon), starring in hits like Roman Holiday, Breakfast at Tiffany's, and My Fair Lady. Hepburn also did a great deal of humanitarian work during her life, starting with work for UNICEF in the 1950s.

Fun Fact: I didn't know Hepburn was born in Belgium, and I didn't know her parents were members of the British Union of Fascists (when Hepburn was a small child).

#5 - PLASTIC BERTRAND

I have never heard of Plastic Bertrand (b. 1958 in Brussels, real name Roger Jouet), but he's been voted #5. He is a musician, producer, and TV host. In 1977-78, he had a hit with his song "Ça plane pour moi" (it's all going well), though it was actually sung by Lou Deprijck. It rose to #8 in Britain and #39 in the US on Billboard, and did well on charts through-out Europe. Plastic Bertrand has released ten albums, lots of singles and apparently the Presidents of the United States used to cover one of his later songs, "Slaves to the Beat".

Fun Fact: Plastic Bertrand is apparently a very dedicated and good Scrabble player.

#6 - PETER PAUL RUBENS

Most people who know anything at all about art will have heard of Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640). He is one of the most famous painters in history and probably the most famous of the Flemish baroque painters. Is (was) he Belgian? He was born in Siegen, Westphalia (now part of Germany) but his parents were religious refugees from Antwerp, now of course in Belgium but then part of the Spanish Netherlands. Rubens was educated in Antwerp and lived much of his life in that city - so I think claiming him as Belgian is reasonable.

Rubens' Self-Portrait

Fun Fact: The adjective rubenesque is derived from Rubens' name and the way he painted women.

#7 - RENÉ MAGRITTE

Another world-class artist, the surrealist painter René Magritte (1898-1967) was born in Lessines, Belgium, and studied at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels. Famous for his visual paradoxes in his works. He's one of my favorites, I'd put him ahead of Rubens and Plastic Bertrand at least!

The artist posing by one of his famous paintings.

Fun Fact: "This is not a pipe" in French is "Ceci n'est pas une pipe."

#8 - GEORGES LEMAÎTRE

Georges Lemaître (1894-1966) - I didn't recognize the name, but I definitely recognize his top claim to fame. Lemaître (born in Leuven, Belgium) was a Roman Catholic priest, astronomer and professor of physics at the Université catholique de Louvain. And he was the guy who first proposed the Big Bang theory of the origin of the universe, which Lemaître called his "hypothesis of the primeval atom".

Fun Fact: Some guy called Einstein was initially dismissive of Lemaître's theory but eventually came around.

#9 - ALBERT CLAUDE

Another one I wasn't familiar with. Albert Claude (1899-1983) was a biologist who in 1974 won (sharing with two of his students) the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, for his work on the structural and functional organization of cells. Over his career, Claude studied medicine in Belgium, and worked in Germany, the United States, and Belgium (he was Director of the Institut Jules Bordet, Centre des Tumeurs de l'Université Libre de Bruxelles of the Université Libre de Bruxelles from 1949 to 1970).

Fun Fact: The Institut Jules Bordet was named after another Belgian who won the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine.

#10 - LEO HENDRIK BAEKELAND

You probably haven't heard of Baekeland (b. 1863 in Ghent, Belgium; d. 1944 in Beacon, New York). You may not recognize the word Bakelite, his 1907 invention. But you DO know what Baekeland and Bakelite wrought - Bakelite was the first "synthetic thermosetting plastic" ever made. It essentially was the first product of the Plastic Age. Baekeland, a chemist, also invented Velox photographic paper in 1893. Belgium has to share Baekeland with the US I think; he was born in Belgium and received his PhD from the University of Ghent. But at age 26 he visited New York City on his honeymoon, and was offered a job by the head of an American photo film company. Baekeland became an American citizen and lived the rest of his life in the US.

Fun Fact: The Plastic Ono Band would not have been possible without Bakelite.
