2015 Challenge: Play 10 Games 10 Times Each

Background:
For 2013, I participated in the challenge to play all my unplayed games, which wasn’t easy since, like many people, I kept buying more. But I feel good in having met the spirit of the challenge in consciously keeping up with the new games I bought through my own tracking geeklist. I even focused on replaying games, but usually only once.

This left me with an empty feeling, of not being able to get into the meat of some of the games. We hardly ever play a game more than a couple of times before we move on to something else. And I don’t want to do that this year. Nope, this year I’m going to focus on replaying games a lot and getting into the strategy of them. It’s not going to be easy, especially with fantastic new games always coming out, but I’m going to pick 10 and stick with it.

2/25/14 Rules Changed - Read the bolded sections carefully!

The Challenge:
If you’re interested in joining me in this challenge, it’s pretty easy to do so and may even hold some small prizes at the end. Anyone can join at any time in 2014.

1. Add an item, either a game from your list or create your own Geeklist and enter its ID.
2. In the comment form for the item, write down your ten games.
3. Under each game, write 1-10 to track the number of plays or use stars.
4. When you play the game, enter the date next to the highest empty number (if you want to).
5. You may include any plays that happened in 2014, even if they were before you joined the challenge.
6. If you don't like a game on your list, you may add a new one to your list. You can do this change as many times as you like. As long as you play 10 games 10 times by the end of the year, it doesn't matter if it was the original 10 you chose to list. If you do change a game, please send a Geekmail to BK (user:Vacabck) as he's collating data on this challenge.
The game list must be finalized by midnight of December 31st, 2013. Except those who join in 2014, your list must be finalized before you begin tracking games. No plays before joining count towards this challenge.
7. The challenge starts January 1st, 2014 and ends December 31st, 2014. Do not count any games played before January 1st, 2014 or after December 31st, 2014.
8. When you have completed the challenge, played all 10 games 10 times, send me a GeekMail with a link to your item on this Geeklist. (Click on the number of your entry and it will give you a permanent hyperlink.)
9. If you have any questions, please send me a Geekmail or post in the comment section at the very bottom of this Geeklist. Due to my current health issues, I cannot keep up with how big this list has become. I do want to be here to help, but I just don't have time to regularly read through every page.

Note: If you want to enter the challenge more than once, it is allowed. You may create as many lists of 10 as you like. However, to make it fair for those whom this is a real challenge, prizes will be awarded for the completion of one list, not each list.

Prizes:
At the end of 2014, I’ll review the entries and anyone who has completed the challenge will get a prize. I’m going to start with Geek Gold. I’m putting in 20 GG to get started and will add to it any GG donated to this Geek List. The total amount will be split among those who succeed at the challenge. While I will be tracking my progress here, I will not be eligible for the prizes. And depending upon how the year goes, I may include more prizes, but no promises right now.
Jamey Stegmaier has donated a copy of Euphoria: Build a Better Dystopia to be given to one random person who completes the challenge. Thanks so much Jamey!
Darrell Louder has donated a copy of Compounded with Compounded: Chemical Chaos to be given to one random person who completes the challenge. Thanks so much Darrell!
Eric Jome (user:cosine) will give 50 GG to anyone who succeeds on the challenge with more than 5 games that were published before 2004 on their list. No games released in 2004 count. It is okay to play a new edition of a game if the original came out before 2004.
BK (user:Vacabck) will give 63 GG to the participant with the most entertaining thread/geeklist chronicling their 10x10 journey. This will be decided by him. Check for his thumb on your GeekList to see if he's tracking it. If not, send him a GeekMail.
Mark Walker (user:Mark Holt Walker) of Lock 'n Load Publishing (www.lnlpublishing.com), will donate two boxed games to one participant that completes the challenge with at least 5 war games in the 10 games. The winner will be selected randomly.

Final Stats:
Thanks to Pasi Ojala, we have the following, mostly accurate, stats:
889 total users
1,644 different games
10,321 total in 922 items
4 empty or not understood lists

286 users completed the challenge (as of 1/24/15)
32% of users completed the challenge

Etc:
Let me know if you have any questions. Hope you’ll consider joining the challenge, but most importantly – play games!

--If you play a game multiple times in a row, each completed game counts as a play. Partial games do not count, but can be added together to count as whole games.

--Feel free to include expansions in your games. I would recommend to record plays under the base game, though, and not have an entry for the expansions themselves. The exception is game expansions that can be played on their own. One example is Dominion since you can play each expansion as it's own focus as long as you have the base cards.

--Any games in a series still count as their own game. For example, the Tempest line of games. However, the exceptions are D&D, 18xx, Dungeon Command, Heroscape and GMT Coin. Brass and Age of Industry can be on entry as well. If you think of any other exceptions, please let me know.

--If you feel that step 3 & 4 above will make your entry too long, feel free to record it some other way such as using 10 stars in a row or just recording the number of plays instead of a vertical list with dates.

--Feel free to play your games in any order that you like. You don't have to start with #1 and play all 10 games before going to #2. Unless that is how you want to do it.

--Role-playing games count. Each session counts as a play. So if you meet 10 times, that's 10 plays.

--For games that have scenarios, playing through a scenario counts as a play.

--Online/digital games count regardless if you are playing against a person or the computer AI. The game just has to be a digital implementation of a physical board game.

I really like this challenge, thanks Sarah! I really want to get my 'H-Index' going up!

It's very hard for me to get to play games: just not enough time and not enough time with boardgame-friends. This is a great incentive for me to 'stop buying and get playing' (maybe not so much on the 'stop buying' part...) If anyone wants to help me play these games in 2014 (at my or your table), please PM me!

The number in brackets tells you how much I played the game from when I started logging plays (somewhere from 2012, I believe). I will not update these numbers here for reference purposes.

At the end of 2013 I'll finalise this list. And this list is finalised. I have only 3 games on this list published before 2004. Good luck and have fun everyone!

Caverna (the one that is on pre-order right now) And the game is finally here!

Blocco (4)

Hive (8)

Tokaido (9)

Star Wars X-Wing (4)

We did it! Jaipur, one of the smallest games among those in the list, dragged us into december, but we did it. Interestingly enough, had I understood the "hardcore" challenge part, we would have completed that as well (we did play 10 games from the original list)

TOTAL PROGRESS: 100/100 (non-hardcore)

Edit: the list was changed on 2014.12.17 due to the impossibility to complete it in hardcore mode. Main problem was the lack of time in the last month and a half, and a general lack of time during the year (it's the first time ever that Descent gets less than 20 plays in one year). Still, the challenge was fun, and I learned a lot of things about many of the games we have.

(between brackets, the number of plays during 2013)

01. Eldritch Horror (3) completed on 2014.08.11

(all games played with: Eldritch Horror, Forsaken Lore and Mountains of Madness)
2014.02.27 - Finn, Ursula, Daisy and Patrice faced Cthulhu. Difficulty of the Mythos deck: easy. After 2h30', Cthulhu woke up destroying the world (only one Mystery solved, Threatening Seas)
2014.03.01 - Tommy, Agnes, Daisy, George faced Cthulhu. Difficulty of the Mythos deck: normal. Gameplay: 2h40'. Final outcome: victory for the investigators by three mysteries solved (Queen of the Deep Ones, The Deep Ones attack!, Watching the Stars)
2014.03.02 - Patrice, Agnes, Ursula and Wilson faced Cthulhu. Difficulty of the Mythos deck: hard (no starting rumor). Gameplay: 3h15'. Final outcome: victory for the investigators by three mysteries solved (The Deep Ones attack!, Queen of the Deep Ones, R'lyeh risen)
2014.03.14 - Tommy, Finn, George and Wilson faced Yig. Difficulty of the Mythos deck: normal. Gameplay: 2h. Final outcome: defeat for the investigators after one mystery was solved (K'n-yan unearthed).
2014.07.20 - Finn, Agnes, Tommy and George faced Ithaqua. Difficulty of the Mythos deck: easy. Gameplay: 3h. Final outcome: defeat for the investigators by final mystery.
2014.07.27 - Wilson, Patrice, Tommy and George faced the Rise of the Elder Things. Mythos deck: easy. Gameplay: 2h20'. Final outcome: victory for the investigators by resolving four mysteries.
2014.08.02 - Agnes, Patrice, Wilson and Daisy faced Ithaqua. Mythos deck: normal. Gameplay: 4h. Final outcome: victory for the investigators by resolving three mysteries (fantastic game, possibly the best Eldritch Horror game played so far).
2014.08.09 - Ursula, Wilson, Finn and Agnes faced the Rise of the Elder Things. Mythos deck: normal. Gameplay: 3h30'. Final outcome: victory for the investigators by resolving four mysteries.
2014.08.10 - Ursula, Daisy, Tommy and George faced Ithaqua. Mythos deck: hard (no starting rumor). Gameplay: 40'. Final outcome: slaughter, ehm, defeat for the investigators with zero mysteries solved.
2014.08.11 - Tommy, Ursula, Daisy and Finn faced the Rise of the Elder Things. Mythos deck: hard (no starting rumor). Gameplay: 4h. Final outcome: victory for the investigators by resolving four mysteries.

2014.05.22 - Game 3: third and last game with Agency + Shub (hubby) vs Miskatonic + Yog (Julia); after going 0-1, this time I got my revenge and won 3-1. Too bad the next plays will be done with different decks.
2014.05.23 - Game 4: changed decks, Miskatonic + Shub against Agency + Hastur; hubby went 1-0, only to lose 3-1 after one hour and a half of strenuous struggling. Great game!
2014.05.24 - Game 5: same decks as game 4, in an incredibly close game. Andrea lead 1-0, 2-1 and finally won 3-2.
2014.06.02 - Game 6: same decks as game 4 and 5. An incredibly short game (bad starting hand for me, incredibly good for Andrea) that ended 3-1 in a few moments.
2014.06.02 - Game 7: we swapped the decks, so that I played Miskatonic + Shub and Andrea played Agency + Hastur. Quite a balanced game until I fell into a trap and had Y'golonac destroyed by Thomas Malone. Won hubby 3-1.
2014.06.04 - Game 8: same decks as in game 7; hubby led since the beginning, going 1-0 and then 2-1; with a good combo (Agoraphobia + Scothophobia) he forced Y'golonac back in my hands and scored easily the last story card for the final 3-1.
2014.06.04 - Game 9: same decks as in games 7 & 8; terrific starting hand for Andrea, terrible for me. In very few turns I was under 2-0 and couldn't do anything to avoid the unavoidable final 3-0.
2014.06.06 - Game 10: changed decks, this time it was Miskatonic + Hastur (Julia) vs Shub + Syndicate (Andrea). A neverending match lasted for 2h 45' and ended up with Andrea winning for 3-2.

06. Doom: The Boardgame (5) completed on 2014.06.03

2014.01.13 - Game 1: Core game only, 2 marines entered The Shores of Hell (Scenario 2) and died prematurely for 6 frags in Area 3.
2014.01.17 - Game 2: Rematch of Game 1, with swapped roles. More interesting game this time, but ended again in bloodhsed.
2014.01.19 - Game 3: Third attempt at completng The Shores of Hell. Another victory for the Invader player. Great game, with a terrific start. Marines have lost only because of a bad reading of Area 5.
2014.01.25 - Game 4: Fourth (and last for now) attempt at completing The Shores of Hell. Victory for the Invader player by scoring six frags while still in Area 5.
2014.05.21 - Game 5: We started playing with material from the expansion so that Scenario 6 was on duty. 2 Marines (Julia) were fragged to death before reaching the final area and leave the sector victorious.
2014.05.21 - Game 6: another Scenario 6 game. Gameplay went smoother this time, with my marines able to enter the two protected areas and stockpile armor and healing tokens, but still they were fragged immediately before scouting through the last area.
2014.05.22 - Game 7: third attempt at Scenario 6. Lost on the very last die: fumbled the final attack to the Hell Knight blocking the exit to the next level, received the 6th frag on the counter.
2014.05.24 - Game 8: fourth attempt at Scenario 6. The game started smoothly, but I lost time on the starting area to clean an Archvile. Hubby promised me this would have costed me the game, and he was right. 6 frag before revealing the final area.
2014.05.24 - Game 9: fifth attempt at Scenario 6. A great start, and then everything went more or less smooth up to the last area, where marines risked another loss before scoring the victory. Tense game.
2014.06.03 - Game 10: first attempt at Scenario 7. Lovely scenario in a totally claustrophobic setting, where marines have to explore a level filled with cobwebs, merging every instant more into a living Hell of demons and pain. Invader won by 6 frags at Area 3. A very tense and fun game, again.

08. Nexus Ops (0) completed on 2014.11.01

2014.04.22 - Game 1: A 3p game ended up in a very close call won by Cat. Standard rules and no variants in play.
2014.04.24 - Game 2: Breathtaking 3p game played with my sister Silvia, ended up with my victory after being cornered and almost destroyed in the previous rounds.
2014.05.04 - Game 3: Another 3p game played, Cat back in the mix. A very short game, characterized by the almost total absence of Rubium dragons on the battle field.
2014.05.19 - Game 4: A 2p game played against hubby. A smooth start for me, going 3-0 very soon, then Andrea pushed, I did a stupid error and he stomped on me scoring 7 points in one single turn and ending up winning 12-5. Surprisingly good game even 2p.
2014.06.03 - Game 5: Another 2p game played against hubby. Totally skewed board: I got the army, he got the most rubium. Crazy game, with two very long battles that decided the final outcome. Hubby won 12 to 9.
2014.06.04 - Game 6: Another 2p game, with the new Units in. For now, we like the classic version better: it was more strategical and less luck dependant (here you roll a lot more dice to trigger or resolve special abilities, and this creates a lot of uncertainties on how to prepare for battle). Hubby won 12-10. Still a close call, tho. We'll be playing 2 more games with revised units, and then try a different variant.
2014.06.30 - Game 7: Another 2p game, with variant units and additional tokens seeded during the setup. The new tokes are nifty, some more rubium, some energize cards, but also less rubium refineries, and this made the battle more cruent. I won 13-10, after hubby dominated the whole game. After seven plays, some defects of the game become clearly visible.
2014.10.28 - Game 8: Another 2p game, with classic units in, but testing the vortex variant. It was fun and short, with a lot of Energize Cards being dealt during the game (we almost farmed the whole deck, something never happened before). Hubby won, 12-10, in 6 rounds.
2014.10.31 - Game 9: Another 2p game, testing another variant. Bad Neighbors in play, with alternate tokens. The game was skewed due to the asymmetric distribution of resources, and I won by a landslide (12-7, but it could have ended 12-3).
2014.11.01 - Game 10: played the 2p variant called "Energy dependence": the board was shrinked by removing the external rows of hexes. Terribly gruesome game, ended up with a lot of bad luck on a single side. Julia victorious by 12 to 10.

09. Wiz-War (eighth edition) (43) completed on 2014.01.12

2014.01.05 Game 1 and 2 played: red wizard vs yellow wizard (and then the other way round, we switched boards and wizards)
2014.01.06 Game 3 and 4 played: purple wizard vs green wizard (and then the other way round)
2014.01-09 Game 5 played: purple wizard (board A) vs yellow wizard (board A). we focused on "hit and run" and for the first time in a long while, the game ended without anyone being killed (won purple 2-1)
2014.01.11 Game 6, 7 and 8 played (with purple and green wizards the first two rounds, with yellow and blue the third one)
2014.01.12 Game 9 and 10 played (purple wizard vs red wizard)

2014.01.12 - Andrea: 208; Julia: 179; Cat: 182
2014.01.26 - Andrea: 248; Julia: 214; Cat: 188
2014.02.01 - Andrea: 217; Julia: 195; Cat: 186
2014.02.03 - Andrea: 208; Julia: 198; Cat: 177

Back-up game:

11. Descent: Journeys in the Dark (first edition) (12)

2014.06.22 - Game 1: Mordrog, Eliam, Laurel and Ronan tried to save the Duke and kill the leader of the Blacktooth Ogre Tribe in the Buried Alive scenario from Well of Darkness, but were defeated after revealing the final room.
2014.06.29 - Game 2: Grey Ker, Nanok of the Blade, Battlemage Jaes and Runewitch Astarra felt prisoner of the Spider Queen while trying to rescue a wise woman from a nearby village. Nonetheless, they were able to free themselves and triumph over the Evil Queen, saving the poor woman's life.
2014.07.13 - Game 3: Karnon, Shiver, Steelhorns and Kirga tried the Raiders of the Lost Temple scenario from Well of Darkness (according to our revised version). They ended up losing after revealing the final area of the dungeon.
2014.09.22 - Game 4: started a Road to Legend campaign, with Nanok, Nara, Mad Carthos and Andira Runehand vs a Dragon Overlord. Played 4 hours of campaign, coming halfway through the first dungeon. Overlord leading 13-6.

These are all time favourite, but also all but two are really time demanding, so the challenge should be fair, I hope!

ABANDONED GAMES
These are the games that I had in my original 10x10 and that didn't receive enough plays during 2014. I'm leaving them here as reference for the progresses done.

04. Mansions of Madness (7)

2014.11.01 - Game 1: Ashcan, Monterey, Mandy and Jenny tried to solve "A Cry for Help", Scenario 1 from Call of the Wild. The game was lost to the Keeper who managed to have one ally killed by the Dunwich Horror after the Objective card was revealed.
2014.11.02 - Game 2: Ashcan, Mandy, Amanda and Darrell attempted to save the world from destruction in "The Stars Aligned", Scenario 2 from Call of the Wild. A tense and close game, decided at the very last turn: sadly, Yog-Sothoth woke up and destroyed everything.
2014.11.03 - Game 3: Mandy, Gloria, Kate and Harvey woke up on a ritual space and tried to tear The Mind's Veil apart, Scenario 3 from Call of the Wild. Once more, the Keeper won.

07. Battles of Westeros (2)

2014.01.19 - Game 1: Clash on the Kingsroad Scenario played. Ended up with Lannisters winning the two objectives at the end of the third round. Short game, but returning to Westeros was awesome!
2014.01.21 - Game 2: Clash on the Kingsroad Scenario played again, with swapped roles. Stark won by Lannister routing at the end of round 4.
2014.01.26 - Game 3: Third try at Clash on the Kingsroad. Much a closer game, with Lannister victorious on the very last dice roll of the entire game.
2014.01.27 - Game 4: First attempt at Paying the Piper. Much more difficult to read than the first one, essentially because the strongest units have marginal positions on the board and move slowly. At the end of the 4th round we were tied, so that an overtime was needed to assess Lannister victory for 4 objectives won to 2.
2014.02.03 - Game 5: Second attempt at Paying the Piper. We swapped roles but Lannister won again. This time no extra time required. My first Battles of Westeros victory over my husband. Yay!
2014.02.05 - Game 6: Third attempt at Paying the Piper. I was Stark again, and hubby Lannister. Completely different game this time: I tried to accept some attrition in order to gain the objectives and then defend, but I wasn't able to penetrate Lannister's defense in the proper way so that, in the end, Lannister won again.

10. Fortress America (0)

2014.05.20 - Game 1: victory for the US after ten rounds of intense struggling and sufference (and an overall 8 hours and a half due to having the rules down once and for all. Had a great time, tho)
2014.05.23 - Game 2: victory for the US after nine rounds (Invaders forfaitted due to their armies being unable to conquer any further territories). Long game: 4.5 hours.
The game simply is horrible. Too long, too slow, too boring in its second half and too nerve wrecking in the first half.

This is going to be difficult, but well worth it! Now to get some people to play on the other side of the table. I guess there is always the cat...

Star Wars: The Card Game

1. 21Jun14 - Finally a play in of one of my favorite games! I taught a good friend of mine how to play. He won! When I asked how he liked it he said it was, "Okay I guess." soblue Maybe I'll have to join the darkside and just play Netrunner... or learn Jedi Mind Tricks
2. 05July14 - A good way to celebrate the Independance day weekend, with star wars! And the rebels won
3. 06July14 - Played with my wife for a second day in a row. I keep hoping she will learn to like the game once she gets the hang of it, no luck. Maybe my challenge should be to convert one other person to this game soblue

Ticket to Ride: Nordic Countries

1. February 21, 2014
My cat is a Maine Coon. Since his breed may be descended from Norwegian Forest Cats he endorsed this game. It got two dewclaws up.
2. February 22, 2014
My wife had so much fun playing she wanted to play again! The cat attempted to make off with one of the plastic trains that fell on the floor - he thinks he is a robber baron. I am starting to suspect my wife is a Euro gamer and I am American...
3. March 1, 2014
My two game winning streak is over, my wife beat me. The blue trains failed me and my passengers are stuck in the frozen north...
4. March 9, 2014 - We liked the Nordic version so much we bought the original version.
5. March 16, 2014 - Lots of choo-choo-chooing going on the last few weeks.
6. March 30, 2014 - We bought another expansion, the Switzerland expansion. I think this one was one of the most cut-throat yet, but maybe our Tickets just lined up to cause direct competition.
7. 06July14 0 Wow time flies! It doesn't seem like 3 months since we played this last!
8. 04Oct14 - Another three months since we've played last. Since right before Gen Con through now we haven't gotten much game time in. I don't think I'm going to complete the challenge...

Star Wars X-wing Miniatures

1. May the 4th Be With You! A fun event, got to play a few rounds at a game store. I love this game!
2. May the 4th Be With You!
3. May the 4th Be With You!
4. May the... oh, you get the idea already!
5. May the 21st of May also be a Star Wars Day
6. May 26th - I haven't been feeling well, and my wife decided she wanted to give the game another play. I don't know if it was sympathy from me not feeling well or cause she really wanted to play again. Either way, I'll take it! Now to get her to play the LCG...
7. July 23rd: They started a league at a local game store. I will be able to get much more X-wing in now, although I am a bit outclassed!
8. July 23rd
9. July 30th - Second week of league night! Still enjoying it, and got some nifty tokens!
10. July 30th - Game 2 of league night, and the completion of this part of the challenge!

Playing this game 10 times has really opened it up. I see things more clearly. For example, the movement I can begin to visualize better so I don't hit asteroids as often! I am also glad this was my first game to hit 10 olays because it is one of my favorite on the list.

Star Trek: Attack Wing

1. February 16, 2014
My cat wanted to play the Kilrathi faction. When I told him they weren't in the game yet he refused to play so I played with my wife instead!
2. March 2, 2014
Played at a store which forgot it was having an OP game that day. They made it better by handing my friend and I a Ferengi ship.
3. May 18, 2014 Tholian Web OP It's difficult being a bigger Star Wars than Star Trek fan with more trekkie wife and friends
4. May 18, 2014 : Tholian Web OP. IF you've ever seen the original series Tholian Web episode the Web was about as pointless in this OP as it was in the episode soblue
5. 08 Jun 14
6. 08 Jun 14
7. 08 Jun 14 - Arena OP Sets. Gornlicious! I think I was the only one who was a fan of the scenario, but it may be because I am partial to Gorn. Or is it Gorns? Gornians?
8. 20Jul14 - The store lost the OP kits, we played one big game with three people.
9. 14Sep14 - OP3 of The Collective. Store never got 1 or 2!

Cowboys: The Way of the Gun

I had originally had this game, removed it, and brought it back. I thought there was no way my wife would like this game, but she actually does!

1. 13 Apr 14 - First play, scenario one. Cat wanted to be Sterling Price but there was no cat in the game.
2. 13 Apr 14 Played Scenario one again, Wild Bill keeps winning
3. 13 Apr 14 Scenario One one last time, took away Wild Bill's +2 and he still won.
4. 13 Apr 14 Scenario Two, Deadwood, Wild Bill vs. Jack McCall. My wife and I managed to play without cursing. Al Swearengen would be disappointed. Also, due to optional rule 7, Wild Bill won. My wife won each game we played that day. Maybe I should be a School Marm...

Trains

1. March 30, 2014. This is the first time we played the game since GenCon last year. We bought it right away when it went to general release but never got a chance to play it. The cat came upstairs when he heard us setting up. He's been watching the trailers for Godzilla and heard we were going to play the Tokyo map...

OK, I'll try this challenge. Maybe it will help me to play more games, instead of just buying them!

1. Imperial Settlers

2. Splendor

3. Coup

4. Legendary Encounters: An Alien Deck Building Game

5. Tsuro

6. Heroscape Master Set: Rise of the Valkyrie

7. Summoner Wars

8. Star Realms

9. Hull Breach: Loyalty and Vigilance

10. Marvel Dice Masters: Avengers vs. X-Men

I've decided to substitute a few games on my original list with some that are getting more play time. It seems like that will give me the best chance of completing my quest.

I also made a Geeklist to chronicle my adventures.

12/29/14 - Done! The list doesn't look much like the original I posted almost 12 months ago, but the challenge has been completed!

I am in. Great, now I am meta-gaming my meta-gaming.

My H-Index since I started recording plays is at 8. Rather than list all of the heavier/longer games that I want to play but might not make 10 plays of each, I am listing games sitting under the 8-play mark that will help raise my H-Index a few points and provide a foundation for doubling it.

(I am reformatting the layout to make better use of horizontal space so it won't be so long)

Challenge accepted Sarah! Here's my ten that I'd like to give a proper airing to.

And here's my geeklist that I'll use to track plays in more detail than on here:
Ten games, ten plays, one year

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Progress as at 22 December 2014: 100% !!!!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

thumbsup#1 Euphoria: Build a Better Dystopia
Euphoria is a recently arrived Kickstarter that I've played a couple of games of - enough to show that it would be great to play a whole lot more to really get the strategy nutted out.
achieved on 5 October 2014
Extras:

thumbsup#2 Lords of Waterdeep
This is a recent acquisition that I haven't played yet. I really want to get it to the table and understand it properly. Looking forward to ten plays!
achieved on 22 December 2014
Extras:

thumbsup#3 Flash Point: Fire Rescue
A *very* recently arrived Kickstarter that I've been looking forward to for ages! Knowing how many times I played Pandemic when it first arrived I'm hoping that this has the same sort of appeal and replayability. And I have a whole stack of expansion boards (Yay!) which I'll also count as plays.
achieved on 6 December 2014
Extras:

thumbsup#4 Pandemic: On the Brink / Pandemic: In the Lab
I *love* Pandemic. It is my go-to game and I've played probably 30-40 games with a wide range of people since I got it this year but I hardly ever get the two expansions out and have barely played either of them. My current perception is that I prefer the base game to any of the expansion variants but I don't think I've really given any of them a fair go. So next year's the year!
Note: I will not be counting plays of the base game without expansions against this - *only* when I'm using it with either of the expansions.
achieved on 22 November 2014
Extras:

thumbsup#5 Coup
Coup is a recently arrived Kickstarter that is yet to hit the table. However, it looks like it should be a good match for my gaming group.
achieved on 19 December 2014
Extras:

thumbsup#6 Carcassonne
Ok, I know this is a classic but I haven't had it all that long and it hasn't been played a huge amount due to everyone continually getting new games. I also specifically want to try and get my young niece (14) and nephew (11) playing this more to introduce them to other gaming genres apart from the Munchkin/Fluxx style of games that they are currently fixated on.
Note: I will be counting plays that include expansions.
achieved on 8 June 2014
Extras:

thumbsup#7 Seasons
Seasons was the gift from my 2013 AU/NZ Secret Santa. Looking forward to learning and understanding the game in 2014!
achieved on 8 November 2014
Extras:

thumbsup #8 Hanabi
We've played a handful of games of Hanabi and I think it's a game that deserves more plays. It's such a deceptive little game - it looks so easy but it can be sooo difficult!

thumbsup #9 Council of Verona
Council of Verona is a recently arrived Kickstarter that I've played a couple of times. We were rather tentative in the games that we played and very polite. I think we need to play it a lot more to bring out the sneakiness and bluffing ability in everyone. ;-)
Note: I will be counting plays that include expansions.

thumbsup #10 Viticulture
I've played Viticulture once so far at a games convention. 2014 will be the year to learn how it's *really* played!

Alternate game: Stone Age
This is my alternate game in case one of the above games turns out to be a bust and I really can't bring myself to play it ten times.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Personal challenge #1: Sid Meier's Civilization: The Board Game
Civ was, and is, my all-time favourite PC game so when I realised it was available in a table-top game it was a must-buy for me. Unfortunately, its length and complexity means that it isn't to everyone's taste and finding enough people interested in playing it has proved a challenge - and in fact it took over six months before I could even get it to the table. So my added personal challenge is to play Civ more times in 2014 than I did in 2013.
thumbsupPersonal challenge #2: Firefly: The Game
Another recent acquisition, as yet unplayed. But, it's Firefly ... shiny! And it appears that it can be played solo so that might be an option if need be. Although I don't usually play solo so I'll be looking for other victims ... er players to play it with me!
After a great deal of thought I've dropped this out of the main ten since the reality of when and where I play games with my friends means that hitting the table with a 2hr+ game ten times in a year is unlikely - no matter how much we may all like the theme.
However, I refuse to drop it off the list altogether! So my second personal challenge is to ensure that this hits the table at least once in 2014.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

And just because apparently I like making things hard for myself ... I decided to put all of my other underplayed and unplayed games on a list (well, not all, only the ones I actually *want* to play!) to try and work towards at least ten games for all of them as well. But there's no time limit for achieving *these* ten plays. ;-)

Underplayed and unplayed ... an ongoing saga

There are a number of games that I can play 10 times in a month, never mind in a year. But, that would be too easy. Instead, I chose the 10 games that I most want to play 10 times in 2014. This will be much more challenging.

Memoir '44
I chose M'44 as the signature game for this list because it's my favorite game, and I just don't get to play it that much.

1. 1/27: Counter-Attack at Holtzwihr. This was the battle where Audie Murphy earned his Medal of Honor. The battle went back and forth. The Germans reached the forest edge and then got pushed back. The Germans tried again, making it into the forest this time, and then got pushed back again. The Americans won 6-2, but it felt a lot closer.

2. 2/3: Battle of Warsaw. Probably the best defensive positioning I've seen in a scenario - tons of towns, fortresses, sandbags, wire, and hedgehogs. Still, the Germans had an overwhelming number of armor and infantry. Both sides took a beating, but the Germans prevailed 6-4, including the bonus medal for capturing 2 of the fortresses.

3. 2/5: Russian Breakout. The Russians basically had to race across the board and get off the other side. Except there were a gazillion tanks and infantry in their way. One unit made it across. The rest got pummeled. Germany won 6-2.

4. 2/6: Lipovec. Another scenario featuring Germany on the offensive against Russia. Another wave of German tanks and infantry swarming well-defended Russian troops. The Commissar proved to be a thorn in my side, but Russia still eeked out a 6-5 victory.

5. 2/12: Sea of Azov. An open-board slaughter. The Russians started with some great cards, but eventually, the Commissar impeded their momentum. The German tanks entering the board caused all sorts of chaos, and the Germans won 6-4.

6. 2/16: Knightsbridge. A good ol' fashioned tank battle! The Allies got off to a hot start, but their lack of command cards eventually caught up with them. The Germans fought their way back to a tie, and then just overpowered the Allies for a 6-3 win.

7. 4/6: Ponyri. The 6-4 advantage the Germans had in command cards made a world of difference. They were able to put together a cohesive plan, while the Russians just played whatever maximized unit activation. The Germans pushed on the left flank first (with mixed success), then the right flank (with no success thanks to mines and sandbags), and finally the center (with great success). The Germans won 7-3 after eliminating a Russian unit in Ponyri and taking control of the city. Very fun scenario for the Germans!

8. 4/14: Mont Mouchet. A very tense battle between the Germans and the French resistance. Only 4 medals needed for the win, plus German tanks count as 2 medals, plus only 3 figures per French unit, equals a very defensive game where every hit counts. The Allies won 4-3 after playing a barrage on a German infantry unit that was down to its last figure.

9. 4/26: Carentan. The Allies opened the game with an Air Power card and a perfect 8 hits. The Germans never recovered after that, despite a good hand of cards. They just didn't have enough firepower to put together a serious offensive. The Allies picked them off, one unit at a time in an orderly and efficient fashion. The end result was a total blowout, a 5-0 win for the Allies. Still fun to play, though.

10: 5/14: Vassieux. An all-infantry skirmish between the Germans and the French resistance. As expected, the French were highly mobile and very pesky. But their reduced unit strength also made them very vulnerable. Almost all of the action happened in the middle of the board. Lots of back and forth, with the score going 1-0, 1-1, 2-1, 2-2. Eventually, the French had to pull their weakened units out of the way and rely on the flanks. Instead of engaging the flanks, the Germans opted to chase down the weakened units and scored 2 more medals for a 4-2 victory.

Star Wars: X-Wing Miniatures Game
One of my new favorites. I've had very few opportunities to play.

1. 1/5: 2v2 with my brother-in-law and 2 friends. My team flew Luke and Wedge. The other side had Vader and 2 Black Squadrons. The Rebels managed to shoot down Vader and 1 BSP. Luke and Wedge still had plenty of hit points left, and we called the game for the Rebels.

2. 1/12: Han Solo + marksmanship + gunner and 2 Gold Squadron Pilots + ion cannon turrets (basically, 3 ships with 360 degree firing) vs. Boba Fett + draw their fire + gunner and 3 Alpha Squadron Pilots. The Alphas didn't last terribly long. The ion cannons worked really well on them. Han took a lot of damage but hung in there. I called the game when it was down to all 3 Rebels vs. just Boba Fett.

3. 1/29: "Battle of Yavin, Wave 2". Garven Dreis and 2 Red Squadron Pilots vs. Darth Vader and 3 Black Squadron Pilots. Vader did some awesome maneuvering and barrel rolling to finish off the last X-Wing.

4. 2/9: Wedge + shield upgrade, Biggs, and 2 Rookies vs. Vader + squad leader, Howlrunner + stealth, and 4 Academy Pilots. Howlrunner was well protected, thanks to stealth plus a free action from Vader. At the 60-minute time limit, The Rebels were down to Wedge and a Rookie, while the Imperials had only lost 2 TIEs. So, the Imps got the "modified win", but it still felt like it was anyone's game.

5. 2/13: I went to an X-Wing game night at an FLGS for the first time. Met some nice people, and got in 3 games in 3 hours! In all 3 games, I flew Wedge + R2-D2, Biggs, and 2 rookies. In the 1st game, I played against 5 TIEs and a bomber. A frustraing start, as I shot 3 times in the opening round of fire against Night Beast and scored a grand total of 0 hits. But, I hung in there and managed to take out 4 of the TIEs by the time my last X-wing was destroyed.

6. 2/13: A rematch, with my opponent making a slight modification to his upgrades. This time, I shot down the bomber in the first round of fire before it had a chance to fire its missiles. That pretty much set the tone for the rest of the game. Biggs once again frustrated him by dictating his shot selection. In both games, R2-D2 more than pulled his weight, bringing back multiple shields.

7. 2/13: My last game at the FLGS was against my gaming buddy Ron (jude007), who was also making his first appearance at X-Wing night. He flew 5 Black Squadron pilots and Soontir + PTL. My X-wings worked very efficiently, taking out roughly 1 TIE every round. I only lost Biggs in this game, wrapping up my first X-Wing night at 2 wins and 1 loss.

8. 2/20: Playtested the same 4 X-wing squad as above against an Imperial list I've been tinkering with - Kath Scarlet + marksmanship + gunner, Howlrunner, and 3 Academy Pilots. I have a lot less experience flying the Slave I and TIE swarms, and it showed in my playtesting. I hit asteroids with 2 of the TIEs and the Slave I. It was a massacre. The Rebels did a good job at dispersing damage while managing to take out a TIE every round. None of the X-Wings went down, though Biggs was down to 1 hull, and the 2 Rookies were both damaged.

9. 2/21: Playtested the same 4 X-wing squad against a traditional Han Shoots First squad - Han + Chewie + gunner + marksmanship and 2 Rookie Pilots. My 4X squad annihilated the Falcon with some excellent focused fire. Han's wingmen didn't last long after that, and my 4X squad didn't lose a single ship.

10. 2/22: One more playtest for the 4x squad, this time against a TIE swarm of Howlrunner + shield upgrade, an Alpha Squadron Pilot, and 5 Academy Pilots. The 4X squad struggled all game. When I reached the time limit, Biggs and a Rookie were destroyed, as were 3 TIEs. A modified win for the TIE swarm. I have to do a better job with staying at a distance from the swarm and forcing them to break formation and make mistakes.

Dominion: Guilds
It's the newest Dominion expansion and the one I've played the least. For record-keeping purposes, I'll say if I play a game of Dominion that includes at least 1 Guilds card, then this will count as a Guilds play.

1. 1/1: 3-player game with my wife and a friend, featuring Candlestick Maker. He was used plenty of times. The wife had a resounding victory. I finished a distant 2nd.

2. 1/3: 2-player game with my wife, featuring Taxman. He was overshadowed by Altar but still used a few times. I won.

3. 1/3: 2-player game with my wife, featuring Soothsayer. I bought 2, and my wife bought 1. The Curses ran out, but we both did a good job trashing them. I won by 3 points.

4. 1/3: 2-player game with my wife, featuring Masterpiece. Neither of us bought one. There weren't any cards that trashed treasures, and there were definitely cards at $4 and $5 that were better than a Masterpiece plus a Silver or two.

5. 1/12: 3-player game with my wife and a friend, featuring Journeyman. On the whole, I like this guy. He's a Smithy that helps you avoid drawing something you don't want. Though, in this particular setup, there were a number of better $5 cards, and nobody bought the Journeyman. I won the game, with our friend finishing second.

6. 1/12: 3-player game with my wife and a friend, featuring Plaza. This one was a hit, as the 3 of us bought out the pile. I won the game, with our friend finishing second.

7. 1/19: 3-player game with my wife and son, featuring Advisor. Everyone bought at least one.

8. 1/22: 2-player game with my son, featuring Baker. He clearly doesn't understand the concept of "saving for a rainy day", as he spent the Baker's coins immediately.

9. 2/22: 4-player game, again featuring the Plaza. Again, all of them were bought up. In fact, it was the only pile to be depleted (other than Provinces). They worked really well in a game that also included Cache, but no trashers.

10. 5/10: 3-player game, featuring Baker and Soothsayer. By the time I managed to get a Soothsayer, I already had 3 curses in my deck from other players' Soothsayers. That pretty much set the tone for the rest of the game. Baker is one of my favorite cards. I bought a couple, but there were lots of great 5's in the setup, so I didn't go overboard with them.

7 Wonders: Leaders
I got it for Christmas. My wife was getting bored with plain 7 Wonders. Hopefully, this gives the game some new life and more play time.

1. 1/5: 3-player game with my wife and mother-in-law. I had a very hard time getting the resource cards I needed and also generating money to pay for the ones I didn't have. Should have been more conscious of my money rather than spending it all on the leaders. Mom-53, wife-49, me-48.

2. 3/30: 4-player game with my wife and a couple of friends. It was their first time playing with Leaders. I got the leader that reduces the cost of blue cards, the leader that gives 1 VP per blue card, and a leader that gives a science symbol. This led me to play a very different strategy - lots of green and blue cards with chaining. I only played 2 resource cards the whole game. Still managed to build my wonder at minimal expense. One of my neighbors had some military bonuses, so I abandoned military altogether. My wife won with 52 points, and I had 51. Our friends had 45 and 40.

3. 4/19: 5-player game with my wife and her family. It was the first time playing Leaders for 2 of them. I had a couple of very useful leaders and won all the military battles, then got a bonus for all the military wins on top of that. I won with 58 points.

4. 6/12: 2-player game with my wife. This was our first time using the 2-player "expert variant" rules. Managing a neutral player to my advantage and my wife's disadvantage was pretty interesting. I went after the green buildings because I had the leader that gave a bonus for them. My wife went after the blue buildings and racked up 38 blue points! She won 67-45. That's a new house record for most points.

5. 6/15: 3-player game with my wife and mother-in-law. I drafted 3 leaders that gave science bonuses. I was able to get 2 of them in play, plus a boatload of science buildings, resulting in 55(!) science points and 70 points in total. I broke my wife's 3-day-old house record. Still, I view science as a high-risk, high-reward strategy. I'll only go for it if I have something that helps, like leaders or a wonder.

6. 6/24: 2-player game with my wife. We used the B sides of the wonders for the first time. I had 2 leaders that worked with blue cards. Of course, my wife also went for blue cards. I had a little bit of everything in the end - just enough resources to build my wonder, a handful of blues, 4 greens of the same symbol, just enough military to beat my wife but lose to the "free city", and a couple of yellows that gave coins and points. Somehow, it worked, and I won 67-56.

7. 6/28: 2-player game with my wife. I was working on a balanced approach to get the 7 points from Plato. My wife and I tied every age on military. In fact, we were close in every category. She won 54-53.

8. 7/4: 3-player game with my wife and mother-in-law. I set a new house record with 72 points (mostly from blue, leaders, and wonder). My wife came in second with a respectable 60 (mostly blue and science), and my mother-in-law had 46 (mostly military and wonder).

9. 8/2: 2-player game with my wife. At the beginning of Age I, I played the leader with +1 point per blue card. My wife tried to thwart my blue strategy by building them herself. She succeeded in limitng me to 4 blue cards, but she had no real synergy to pull it off, and she paid for it in other areas. I ended up with the max 18 military points vs. her -6, and that was good enough for a 68-56 win. That one leader was the only one I played. I didn't care much for the others, discarding one for coins and using the other to help build my wonder.

10. 8/11: 2-player game with my wife. I had Halikarnassus, side B. The free build from the discards is certainly lacking in a "3-player" game. Definitely a much bigger bang for the buck with 5-7 players. I also had the leader that gives 2 coins for each card you build by chaining. I used that ability 4 times, so well worth the 1-coin investment. In the end, I came up short by 1 point, 56-57. I have a feeling that my last card choice was wrong, but it was difficult to do the math because paying/receiving coins were involved, and I couldn't control what my wife was doing with her coins. After 10 Leaders plays, my wife has gone from "I don't really care for 7 Wonders" to "I like it with the Leaders, and the 2-player variant is very interesting". Mission accomplished.

Qwirkle
My son got this for Christmas, but I have a feeling it will be played without him as well.

1. 1/5: 2-player game with my mother-in-law while my wife put one child to bed. Mom won by about 20 points. Great 2-player game!

2. 5/24: 2-player game with my wife. She won 253-217. I definitely need to work on my strategy in this one!

3. 6/7: 4-player game with my wife, brother-in-law, and father-in-law. Too many people setting up others for Qwirkles. My brother-in-law won, and my wife and I tied for 2nd. I gave her a fair amount of heckling for long turns resulting in 3 or 4 points.

4. 6/8: 3-player game with my wife and brother-in-law. He won again, and I came in 2nd. My wife was getting smoked, but came back late in the game with back-to-back Qwirkles and almost took 2nd.

5. 6/25: 2-player game with my wife. I won 242-206. My first win!

6. 7/23: 2-player game with my wife. Very back and forth. I took the early lead, she got a few quirkles, then I got a few qwirkles, she made a run at the end. I was able to hold her off for a 233-203 win.

7. 7/30: 2-player game with my wife. I was playing catch-up the entire game. I did manage to get within 2 points towards the end, but then she ran away with it. I had 3 qwirkles, and she had 5 plus the end-game bonus. She won 193-169.

8. 8/22: 4-player game with my wife, her mom, and her uncle. First play ever for her uncle. My wife spent the whole game showing her family how they could score more points and ironically, she finished last. My mother-in-law won, and I finished 2nd.

9. 9/7: 2-player game with my wife. She won 249-221. She was in the lead for the entire game (except for me going first). Qwirkle count was 7 for her, and 6 for me. I did back-to-back Qwirkles at one point, including a 17-point turn.

10. 9/25: 2-player game with my wife. I won 241-209, with 7 qwirkles to her 5. Plus, I got the "going out first" bonus. We had some unusual patterns in this game. All of the + symbols were clustered together, and the X symbols were, too.

Kingsburg: To Forge a Realm (replaced by Saint Petersburg)
I've been using a "print & play" version of some components, and I absolutely love it. I got the real deal for Christmas, so I'll have to play it with the real components, plus the parts I've never tried before.

1. 1/4: 2-player game with my wife. We used the governors, the reinforcement tokens, the expanded board, and 1 replacement row. It was a very different game, indeed. I had the heiress and went big on military and religious buildings. My wife had the prince and went for the new top row (and a little bit of everything else). I won 59-51.

2. 1/23: 2-player game with my wife. We used the governors, the expanded board, and 1 replacement row (row G). I chose the princess, and my wife chose the philosopher. It was tough going early on, as the king gave us 1 reinforcement "batallion" in each of the first 2 years. Things picked up after that, and my wife won 54-51.

3. 5/25: 2-player game with my wife. We used the expanded rows plus the alternate row C, the event cards, and the governors. My wife chose the carpenter, and I chose the priest. I didn't really like any of my advisor choices, and the priest didn't work out that well. I only got 4 points from his special ability. I loved the alternate row C, but my wife didn't bother with it. I won 59-51, but it was still possible for my wife to win going into the final winter battle.

4. 6/5: 2-player game with my wife. We used the governors, the events, the expanded rows, and 2 alternate rows. All of the events were negative. First 2 dice rolls in winter were 1's, which resulted in 2 ties for me to start the game. I was behind the entire game until autumn of year 5. I ended up winning by building a church in that autumn, while my wife didn't have enough resources to build anything.

5. 6/17: 2-player game with my wife using the expanded rows, 2 alternate rows, and the governors. I went for the Embassy row. She went for military. It came down to the final battle - level 9 demons. Ugh. I managed a tie. She easily beat them and picked up enough points for the win.

6. 7/11: 2-player game with my wife. We limited our governor choices to just those that triggered on player decisions. Neither of our governors gave us many points. 4 out of 5 destiny cards were helpful, and the lone negative one set king's reinforcements at 2, so not really that bad. It was easy building this game. I built all of the fortress row, embassy row, basilica row (alt row b) and a few others. My wife built all of the wizard's guild row, basilica row, and port row (alt row c), plus a few others. Her dice rolls generally were not great. True, you can still make low rolls work, and the trader's market helped her a lot, but high rolls definitely open up more options. I won 61-47.

Saint Petersburg
My wife and I played it at a friend's game night. I liked it so much that I tracked down a used copy (it's currently out of print). Both of us are looking forward to playing more games, especially with 3 and 4 players.

1. 1/11: My first ever play at a friend's game night. It was a 5-player game using both expansions. Only 1 person had played before, but we all got the hang of it. I liked it so much, I bought a used copy through BGG.

2. 2/8: My own copy of the game finally arrived! A 2-player game with my wife. I was way outproducing her in workers, but she had some great buildings and aristocrats to offset my buying power. I won by 6 points.

3. 3/8. 3-player game with my wife and a friend. It was the friend's first time playing as well, and she enjoyed it.

4. 5/24: 2-player game with my wife. I got 10 aristocrats for the first time ever and won by about 30 points.

5. 6/28: 2-player game with my wife. I was earning way more money, thanks in part to the tax man. My wife made up a lot of points in the end with 10 aristocrats, but it wasn't quite enough. I won by 5 points.

6. 7/5: 2-player game with my wife. The tax man strikes back! This time, my wife grabbed the tax collector, collected a ton of money, and helped her win the game.

7. 7/15: 2-player game with my wife. Return of the tax man! I got him back, raked in a huge pile of rubles, jumped in it Scrooge McDuck-style, and won the game. Verdict - tax collector is overpowered if he comes out early in a 2-player game.

8. 8/8: 2-player game with my wife. My wife managed to get the tax man, but it was later in the game, and he had a material but not game-breaking impact. The game was neck and neck from beginning to end. My wife held and maintained a 2-10 point lead throughout, ultimately winning by 3 points. We both finished with 9 aristocrats. The tax man is 4-0 in 2-player games.

9. 8/14: 2-player game with my wife. Total blowout. I won by at least 30 points. We stopped paying attention to the score at the end since she couldn't catch me, and we had the same number of aristocrats. I'm surprised this one was a runaway game, as I usually only had one more worker than her. I noticed I was doing a lot of hand management to play certain cards at the best times. I also used the $2=1 pt. building 3 times at the max benefit, so that helped widen the points gap.

10. 8/26: 2-player game with my wife. Both of us were at the 3-card hand max for most of the early game. My wife tried a little too hard to get 10 aristocrats and actually ended up with too many in the end. She got the tax man, but it was the 2nd to last round, and he didn't make a big difference. Both of us had the "$2 for 1 point" building. I used it 3 times, and my wife only once. She should have used it more as she ended up with a ton of money in the end. I won by 10 points.

Chronology
I got it for Christmas. Never heard of it before. Looks like a mix of Wits & Wagers and Racko. Should be fun, especially with non-gamers.

1. 1/1: Played a 3-player game with my wife and father-in-law. He NEVER plays games with us, so this was a bit of a suprise. And he actually won! I had 9 cards, and my wife had 8. Everyone enjoyed it.

2. 1/18: 3-player game with my wife and a friend. Played surprisingly quick with 3 players - about 20 minutes.

3. 3/30: 4-player game with my wife and 2 friends. I fell behind early but made a comeback in the end and won by guessing the timeframe for when Levi's riveted jeans were patented (it was mid 1800's, don't remember the exact date). The other players finished with 9, 8, and 7 cards, so a close game all around.

4. 4/29: I decided to try a solitaire variant - get to 10 cards with as few incorrect guesses as possible. A perfect score is 10. In my first try, I got to 9 before getting one wrong. Almost a perfect score on the first try! My final "score" was 12 (10 in the correct order, plus 2 incorrect).

5. 4/29: Another solitaire play. This time I only got to 6 before my first wrong answer. Final score - 15.

6. 4/29: Solo play. Only got 5 before my first wrong guess. And then it totally fell apart after I hit 9. I just couldn't get that 10 card for the life of me. Final score - 20. I'm going in the wrong direction here.

7. 4/29: Solo play. Only got to 3 before my first wrong guess. Yikes! But I finished strong with a final score of 13.

8. 4/30: Solo play. Got the first card wrong, and then struggled the rest of the way, finishing with a score of 16.

9. 4/30: Solo play. First card wrong again?! Though, I pulled it together and finished with a respectable 12.

10. 4/30: A perfect 10! And very fitting that it happened on the 10th play. The 9th card was the hardest - Cartier designs the first wristwatch for men. (1904) Finished the game with an Empire State Building question.

Castle Panic
My wife got this for her birthday. We've played a handful of times and never lost. I'd like to try some of the more challenging variants. I'd also like to introduce the game to my son.

1. 1/11: 2-player game with my wife. We used the "Dwindling Resources" variant that reduces the number of brick and mortar cards as you reshuffle the deck. It didn't matter, as we still easily won. We lost just 1 tower, and there were maybe 2 or 3 rounds where things looked scary. My wife finds this game too easy and too scripted, but I have a feeling my son will like it when we start playing with him.

2. 1/18: 3-player game with my wife and a friend. It was the friend's first time playing. She definitely liked it. It got a bit crazy at the end when 2 different sections had no wall and 2 trolls coming at us. We somehow managed to take care of them and won the game with 5 towers standing. Still undefeated.

3. 2/23: I played a solo game and tried to make it as hard as reasonably possible. No discarding, and since it was solo, no trading either. Well, that was a little too hard. I had a turn with a "draw 4 more" comboed with a "draw 3 more", and that totally wrecked my castle. I hung in there all the way until all the monsters were on the board, but it was too much to overcome, and the last tower finally fell.

4. 2/23: A 2-player game with my wife, and my son and I played as a "team", counting as 1 player. It was his first time playing, so he needed someone to help him go through the steps, make the trades, and play the right cards at the right time. He absolutely loved it, and I'm guessing this will be in heavy rotation for awhile. This was the closest I ever came to losing with playing standard rules. We had 1 tower standing, and a monster in the inner circle. Luckily, a boulder took him out before he could reach the tower.

5. 3/5: A 2-player game with my son. He's been playing a lot with my wife while I'm at work, and he pretty much has the rules down, plus a little bit of strategy. I still have to help with the discards and trades. A few tense moments in this game. Towards the end, we had 3 trolls and an orc in the green section. Luckily, we had saved the barbarian and "drive him back" for just such an occasion. We finished the game with 4 towers standing.

6. 3/8: A 2-player game with my son. Panic ensued, but we managed just fine. We finished off the monsters with 3 towers and 3 walls standing.

7. 3/9: Another 2-player game with my son. The panic moment: 2 trolls and an orc, in the same section, all at full health, move into the swordsman ring. Very ugly, but we do have 2 swordsman to take down the orc next turn. First monster token - swordsman plague. Oh, boy. Panic level just went up to 9. Next monster token - giant boulder, and it rolls down the section with the trolls and orc. A gift from the Panic gods! Crisis averted. We lost some walls during the game, but by the time the last monster was slain, we had rebuilt them all, finishing with all towers and walls standing. I've never seen that before.

8. 3/30: It finally happened. My first loss using the standard rules. Playing with my son and wife, we drew the boss that adds +3 monsters, which led to drawing the +4 monsters token. Part of the problem was that we started the game with lots of mortars, which made us hold onto important cards we couldn't use right away. Slow hand turnover = bad news.

9. 3/30: One more game with my wife and son. We were down to one tower standing with a monster in the castle ring. A well-timed "drive him back" ended the panic, and we won with the one tower standing.

10. 4/2: Another loss! I'm chalking this one up to statistical outlier. By the end of the first 2 turns, we had drawn 3 of the 4 boss monsters and the draw 3 tile. I'm surprised we actually made it to turn 5.

Zooloretto (replaced by Star Wars: Epic Duels)
I might introduce this game to my son. Also, I'd like to get in some more plays with the expansions.

1. 1/16: 3-player game with my wife and son. It was my son's first time playing all of the money actions. He loved the exchange action and swapped tiles every chance he could, even when it was unnecessary. I suppose that's one way to learn how to use the actions!

2. 4/22: 3-player game with my wife and son. My son wanted to take a truck ASAP every round. He didn't care what type of animal it was. Result - unfilled enclosures and lots of animals in the barn. Still, he had a good time but felt the game took too long.

3. 5/24: 2-player game with my wife. We added in the petting zoo and the Iberian lynx. I got the lynx, but I couldn't use him in the end. My wife did a better job managing zoo capacity and had an almost perfect score. She won 46-33.

4. 6/6: 3-player game with my wife and mother-in-law. We also used the petting zoo and polar bear. I got the polar bear, which saved me 2 points in the end. Close game all around - my wife won 31-29-29.

5. 7/1: 2-player game with my wife using the extra mini-enclosures and the petting zoo. She took advantage of both expansions, and I used neither. She won 36-33.

Star Wars: Epic Duels
I got this one way back when it was available in stores. I've played it to death, but my son is now a Star Wars fan and a board games fan, so it's back in the rotation.

1. 1/4: 2-player game with my son. He was Luke and Leia. I was Vader and the storm troopers. I had Vader's "All Too Easy" card in hand (his best card) but was forced to discard it when my son played Luke's "I Will Not Fight You" card. How's that for theme? I was legitimately playing my best, and he still beat me. I got beat by a 3 year old! And I was trying my best! A very bittersweet moment.

2. 1/11: 2-player game with my son. This was a 2v2 game with the master play rules. Mostly just a teaching game to show him the new rules of drawing from either deck and managing a larger squad.

3. 1/12: Another master play teaching game with my son. He's really starting to get the hang of it and held his own with the master play rules.

4. 1/18: Another master play game with my son. I'm letting him win to keep him interested as he learns master play. The Fetts are clearly his favorite characters because of the rocket retreats and other jet pack maneuvers.

5. 1/19: Another master play game with my son. Still holding back a little, but he's figured out master play.

6. 1/25: 2-player game with my son. He was Darth Maul and Count Dooku. I had both of the Fetts. I held back a bit to keep things interesting and ended up winning with just 1 hit point left on Boba Fett.

7. 2/1: 2-player game with my son. We kept switching sides because he really liked both teams. So, I let him playe a few turns as one team and then a few turns as the other team. Palpatine and Dooku defeated Yoda and Obi-Wan.

8. 5/24: 3-player game with my wife and I (Anakin and Obi-Wan) vs. my son (Vader and Maul). My wife and I didn't hold back, and my son definitely held his own. It came down to Anakin and Maul, with Anakin taking advantage of Maul's lack of defense in the end.

9. 5/25: 2-player game with my son. I was Jango Fett and Darth Maul. He was Obi-Wan and Han Solo. I eased up a bit to keep it interesting, and my son won with 5 hit points left on Obi-Wan.

10. 6/14: 2-player game with my son. He played Yoda and Obi-Wan. I played Dooku and Jango Fett. I'm still holding back a bit in master play to keep it interesting, and he won a pretty close game.

Harry Potter Trading Card Game
I've been tweaking my decks recently, and I'd like to get them some play time. Also, I might introduce this game to my son.

1. 1/24: Rebuilt 2 decks. One is Harry Potter with Quidditch and Charms. The other is Draco Malfoy Slytherin with Potions and Charms. I played them against each other. Draco won, but it was close. I wasn't overly impressed with either deck.

2. 1/25: Another game of trying out the 2 new decks against each other. Both decks struggled to reach their potential. Harry won this time in another close one.

3. 1/28: Played the Harry Potter deck against a Hermione Granger creatures/charms deck that has lots of dragons. Hermione won, but it was close. Getting 3 dragons in play for 21 damage per turn led to a huge come from behind victory.

4. 1/28: Same 2 decks as above, but this time Harry won in yet another close game. I was glad to see the Harry deck can at least hold its own against a decent creatures deck.

5. 1/28: The Harry deck got another test against a formiddable creatures deck. This time it was a Neville Longbottom creatures/transfiguration deck. Harry absolutely crushed it. Part of this was luck - Neville didn't draw enough lessons to get going. Still, Harry did a great job dealing a healthy mix of offense and defense.

6. 1/28: One more test between the Harry deck and the Neville deck. Harry won again, but this time it was much closer. If Neville survived to have one more turn, he would have won instead. I was pleasantly surprised at how well the Harry deck matched up against 3 different decks that each had a different style of play. The Harry deck is a keeper.

7. 2/1: Playtested the Harry Potter deck against a Madam Hooch deck with quidditch/charms/potions. It was pretty close from beginning to end, with Hooch getting the win.

8. 2/1: Played the Hooch deck against the Hermione deck. Hermione actually won without any of her 8 dragons and instead relied on Gryffindor lions, viscious wolves, cunning foxes, and doxies. It was good to see the Hermione deck isn't a "one-trick pony".

9. 2/1: Played the Hermione deck against the Neville deck. Neville got off to a very slow start, and picked it up at the end, once the unicorn was in play. Neville capped off an amazing comeback with 2 steelclaws to finish off Hermione.

10. 2/18: Played the Harry Potter deck against the Madam Hooch deck. Hooch got an easy win, as Harry struggled to get out enough lessons. It didn't help that the Hooch deck played a couple "discard from play" cards.

(Note: follow along here!)

I also like a challenge! I've recently started gaming a bit more, so 10 games at 10 plays each over the course of a year might be within my wheelhouse. I'll start off with a few games that I'll probably hit my target for no problem:

1. Blue Moon (Plays in 2013: 24)
Number of plays: 0/10 (Dates: )
Comments:

2. Jambo (Plays in 2013: 9)
Number of plays: 2/10 (Dates: January 11th; January 11th)
Comments:

3. Innovation (Plays in 2013: 34)
Number of plays: 3/10 (Dates: January 16th; January 16th; January 16th)
Comments:

4. San Juan (Plays in 2013: 3)
Number of plays: 0/10 (Dates: )
Comments:

5. Jaipur (Plays in 2013: 6)
Number of plays: 0/10 (Dates: )
Comments:

Followed by the games that I believe will be a bit more of a challenge (that I would still like to explore a bit deeper, while 10 seeming like a feasible target in one year)!

6. Seasons (Plays in 2013: 2)
Number of plays: 0/10 (Dates: )
Comments:

7. Factory Fun (Plays in 2013: 4)
Number of plays: 0/10 (Dates: )
Comments:

8. At the Gates of Loyang (Plays in 2013: 2)
Number of plays: 0/10 (Dates
