2015 Challenge: Play 10 Games 10 Times Each

Background:
For 2013, I participated in the challenge to play all my unplayed games, which wasn’t easy since, like many people, I kept buying more. But I feel good in having met the spirit of the challenge in consciously keeping up with the new games I bought through my own tracking geeklist. I even focused on replaying games, but usually only once.

This left me with an empty feeling, of not being able to get into the meat of some of the games. We hardly ever play a game more than a couple of times before we move on to something else. And I don’t want to do that this year. Nope, this year I’m going to focus on replaying games a lot and getting into the strategy of them. It’s not going to be easy, especially with fantastic new games always coming out, but I’m going to pick 10 and stick with it.

2/25/14 Rules Changed - Read the bolded sections carefully!

The Challenge:
If you’re interested in joining me in this challenge, it’s pretty easy to do so and may even hold some small prizes at the end. Anyone can join at any time in 2014.

1. Add an item, either a game from your list or create your own Geeklist and enter its ID.
2. In the comment form for the item, write down your ten games.
3. Under each game, write 1-10 to track the number of plays or use stars.
4. When you play the game, enter the date next to the highest empty number (if you want to).
5. You may include any plays that happened in 2014, even if they were before you joined the challenge.
6. If you don't like a game on your list, you may add a new one to your list. You can do this change as many times as you like. As long as you play 10 games 10 times by the end of the year, it doesn't matter if it was the original 10 you chose to list. If you do change a game, please send a Geekmail to BK (user:Vacabck) as he's collating data on this challenge.
The game list must be finalized by midnight of December 31st, 2013. Except those who join in 2014, your list must be finalized before you begin tracking games. No plays before joining count towards this challenge.
7. The challenge starts January 1st, 2014 and ends December 31st, 2014. Do not count any games played before January 1st, 2014 or after December 31st, 2014.
8. When you have completed the challenge, played all 10 games 10 times, send me a GeekMail with a link to your item on this Geeklist. (Click on the number of your entry and it will give you a permanent hyperlink.)
9. If you have any questions, please send me a Geekmail or post in the comment section at the very bottom of this Geeklist. Due to my current health issues, I cannot keep up with how big this list has become. I do want to be here to help, but I just don't have time to regularly read through every page.

Note: If you want to enter the challenge more than once, it is allowed. You may create as many lists of 10 as you like. However, to make it fair for those whom this is a real challenge, prizes will be awarded for the completion of one list, not each list.

Prizes:
At the end of 2014, I’ll review the entries and anyone who has completed the challenge will get a prize. I’m going to start with Geek Gold. I’m putting in 20 GG to get started and will add to it any GG donated to this Geek List. The total amount will be split among those who succeed at the challenge. While I will be tracking my progress here, I will not be eligible for the prizes. And depending upon how the year goes, I may include more prizes, but no promises right now.
Jamey Stegmaier has donated a copy of Euphoria: Build a Better Dystopia to be given to one random person who completes the challenge. Thanks so much Jamey!
Darrell Louder has donated a copy of Compounded with Compounded: Chemical Chaos to be given to one random person who completes the challenge. Thanks so much Darrell!
Eric Jome (user:cosine) will give 50 GG to anyone who succeeds on the challenge with more than 5 games that were published before 2004 on their list. No games released in 2004 count. It is okay to play a new edition of a game if the original came out before 2004.
BK (user:Vacabck) will give 63 GG to the participant with the most entertaining thread/geeklist chronicling their 10x10 journey. This will be decided by him. Check for his thumb on your GeekList to see if he's tracking it. If not, send him a GeekMail.
Mark Walker (user:Mark Holt Walker) of Lock 'n Load Publishing (www.lnlpublishing.com), will donate two boxed games to one participant that completes the challenge with at least 5 war games in the 10 games. The winner will be selected randomly.

Final Stats:
Thanks to Pasi Ojala, we have the following, mostly accurate, stats:
889 total users
1,644 different games
10,321 total in 922 items
4 empty or not understood lists

286 users completed the challenge (as of 1/24/15)
32% of users completed the challenge

Etc:
Let me know if you have any questions. Hope you’ll consider joining the challenge, but most importantly – play games!

--If you play a game multiple times in a row, each completed game counts as a play. Partial games do not count, but can be added together to count as whole games.

--Feel free to include expansions in your games. I would recommend to record plays under the base game, though, and not have an entry for the expansions themselves. The exception is game expansions that can be played on their own. One example is Dominion since you can play each expansion as it's own focus as long as you have the base cards.

--Any games in a series still count as their own game. For example, the Tempest line of games. However, the exceptions are D&D, 18xx, Dungeon Command, Heroscape and GMT Coin. Brass and Age of Industry can be on entry as well. If you think of any other exceptions, please let me know.

--If you feel that step 3 & 4 above will make your entry too long, feel free to record it some other way such as using 10 stars in a row or just recording the number of plays instead of a vertical list with dates.

--Feel free to play your games in any order that you like. You don't have to start with #1 and play all 10 games before going to #2. Unless that is how you want to do it.

--Role-playing games count. Each session counts as a play. So if you meet 10 times, that's 10 plays.

--For games that have scenarios, playing through a scenario counts as a play.

--Online/digital games count regardless if you are playing against a person or the computer AI. The game just has to be a digital implementation of a physical board game.

Right now it's mostly about playing with my 8 year old son.
Plus one or two for me too!

1. Castle Dice - this one is currently my son's favorite. But man he hates those barbarian Viking dudes.
meeplemeeple

2. Batt'l Kha'os
- fun with my son! But uh oh. I think this one does not have lasting power. Already he isn't into playing it again. Which means we won't - we will have to find another game to play for this 10 for 10.

2. King of Tokyo - a relative oldie but still goodie. We've gotten a bit more complex now and use the Tokyo board. The harder thing about this game is that you really need three or four players and many times it's just me and my kid, so it's harder to get to the table.
meeple

3. Dungeon Raiders - small box games seem to be hitting a sweet spot right now - this is a great three player with your kids. It's got some real decision points too with the bidding mechanism. But simple enough for my 8 year old and his friend to do. El Grande for the kids.
meeple

4. Dwarven Miner - I have to put stickers on the darn dice!?!? But my son doesn't care - it's a good game to him! Dwarves and mining and weird stuff from the mines and armor and weapons and thievery too - what more could a boy want? Oh yeah, battle... can't have everything.
meeple

5. Dragonheart

6. 12 Realms - have to depend on a friend for this one! It seems to be turning into a semi-regular Friday night thing.

7. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey – Das Kartenspiel - Another new one bites the dust! I'll have to find another game to substitute for this one...

8. The Road to Canterbury - a really interesting game to play with easy to meeplelearn mechanics and a solid sense of game progression. Weird theme that's quite fun! A big hit for me.
meeplemeeple

9. Fresco - I've always liked the getting up in the morning mechanic. I can so relate...
meeple

10. Gem Rush

Possible alternates for the now rejected Batt'l Kha'os:

1. Splendor - not my favorite game but it's easy to play and other folks seems to dig it so far

2. Valdora - my kid truly loves this pick up and deliver game with its jewels and books of tasks and tools.

3. Dragon's Hoard - small box game that's easy to play and surprisingly good - better with two but my son and I played it with my mom who was just admitted to a convalescent home - she got a kick out of it too!

All right ... I will give this a shot. I'm just going to include plays I actually log. Since I'm coming into this so late in the year, there are a few I've already played 10 (not all logged) ... but to be fair, I'm picking games I think I should play more of, instead of only ones I've already played a bunch of. Click on a star to see the log, or here to see a list of all the plays I've logged this year.

Update (7/13): My only play partner (which is to say, my wife) has been busy lately, and is going to be either extra busy or completely absent for the next 5 weeks or so (that is, all of July, and some of August). And since I start nursing school at the end of Sept, I just don't see myself actually finishing this. Even if I finish all the plays for games with a solo variant while she's gone, this will be difficult.

Update (8/12): So, Michelle is back home. Hoping to get some extra plays in before school starts, but we'll see how things go. I should probably get a job at a nursing home while waiting for the hospital to hire me, but then I'll never have a chance at finishing this ...

Update (10/18): Nursing school started a little over 2 weeks ago, but I'm still trying to fit some games in. If/when I get hired into the float pool at the hospital, I don't think I'll have time for anything except school and working.

Updated (12/22): First quarter of nursing school is finished, so I need to scramble to finish all the plays we're missing. Hopefully we can make it, but it's going to be a very busy vacation trying to fit everything in with all the visiting of family that we have to do every year (not that I'm complaining, it's just hard to find time for all the things we have to do and want to do).

1. Agricola (10/18)

2. Flash Point: Fire Rescue (12/20)

3. Ginkgopolis (11/16)

4. Glass Road (11/27)

5. Goa (10/11)

6. Hive (12/25)

7. Race for the Galaxy (12/26)

8. Small World (09/28)

9. Stone Age (12/23)

10. Troyes (10/13)

I am a little late to the party (I am joining at the tail end of May) but I have always been drawn to this Challenge so I decided to officially jump in!

Explanation of games: I chose what I believe are a good mix of light games, two player games, and heavy games. I didn't want to put too many heavies on the list for fear of failure (I was this close to throwing Runewars on there… but at the time of this writing I have 0 plays!) I also picked a few two player games to be played with my wife. I chose to leave off very short games, like Love Letter, but felt it was OK to include Hanabi do to its complex nature (and the fact that I have almost 100 plays at this moment).

Stipulations: I have also chosen not to include my RPG sessions or my digital games. This is simply to make this personal challenge a little bit difficult on myself. For me, the point of the challenge is to get more/different board games to the table. I already meet with my RPG groups multiple times a month, so I feel it is unnecessary for that game to be included on the list. As for digital games, another important aspect for me in this challenge is meeting up with other people. Since the games I play digitally have very little social interaction, I have decided to leave those types of games off of the list.

7 Wonders: (10 plays total)

Agricola: (10 plays total)

Hanabi: (115 plays total)

King of Tokyo: (25 plays total)

Lords of Waterdeep: (10 plays total)

Lost Cities: (10 plays total)

Mage Knight the Board Game: (13 plays total)

The Resistance: (29 plays total)

Summoner Wars: (10 plays total)

Puzzle Strike (Third Edition) (18 plays total)

100% Complete!

Been meaning to get in on this for a while now... It's really going to be a stretch for me since last year I didn't get a single game played 10 times. I'm off to a better start this year, but even though I listed the 10 I think I have the best chance at, there's still a few that are a bit of a challenge.

Crokinole (2/10) - My most played game the last two years, a lunch time favorite.

Memoir '44 (4/10) - Usual drop two plays per sitting as my brother switch sides in between.

K2 (7/10) - Most, but not all, will probably be solo.

Hanabi (5/10) - Versatile game, hope to do well here.

meeplemeeplemeeple Click Clack Lumberjack (10/10) - I'm not even including multiple plays in the same sitting...

Coconuts (4/10) - Taken to work, hope to see some lunch-time play.

Mice and Mystics (0/10) - Gambling a bit here as I'm not sure it'll catch on, but if it does...

Cosmic Encounter (0/10) - Been thinking more and more, I think I've finally got a group of people this will appeal to.

Airlines Europe (2/10) - It's going to be tough, but everyone I've played with has enjoyed it quite a bit.

Tumblin' Dice (0/10) - Another one I might take to work.

So this will be our combined/separate list, which may make it seem rather long. We don't always play games together either, so those games have stars for each of us. Hopefully it makes sense.

I'm trying to cultivate a collection of games that play well solo. Here are my 10 to try for the year:

(Individual dates are on the linked geeklist, and plays of all are logged on each game page.)

At the Gates of Loyang: (29 December)
Gem Rush: (18 October)
Glass Road: (27 December)
Onirim: (2 December)
Pandemic & its expansions: (1 July)
Roll Through the Ages: (13 November)
Snowdonia: (9 November)
Suburbia & Suburbia Inc: (31 December)
Ticket to Ride: Europe/US/Nordic: (13 December)
Welcome to Walnut Grove: (27 December)

I really wanted to enjoy At the Gates of Loyang more than I did. Try as I might I couldn't complete 10 plays of it.

My completed alternate is K2.

K2 (and Broad Peak expansion): (1 September 2014)

All, right, we're committing to this challenge at last! Trajan is the game I suspect we'll have the hardest time finishing, but it's the one of the ones I'm most looking forward to delving deeper into. To help us along I'm counting the plays since January 2014. Love Letter and Settlers of Catan are included in the challenge at the insistence of my daughter.

7 Wonders: (1/1)(1/17)(1/25)(2/21)(3/8)(3/8)(6/28)(7/1)(11/9)(12/5)

Alien Frontiers: (5/17)(5/31)(6/5)(6/19)(7/11)(7/20)(9/23)(10/7)(12/5)(12/21)

Among the Stars: (5/30)(6/1)(6/13)(6/21)(7/4)(11/7)(11/23)(11/27)(12/20)(12/27)

Bruges: (3/12)(3/12)(3/22)(5/5)(7/21)(9/21)(11/23)(12/7)(12/14)(12/25)

Lords of Waterdeep: (3/25)(4/26)(7/11)(7/18)(8/3)(8/6)(9/26)(10/19)(11/16)(12/30)

Love Letter:

Race for the Galaxy: (1/19)(2/1)(2/1)(2/15)(3/15)(5/18)(5/27)(5/27)(6/9)(7/2)

Settlers of Catan: (1/24)(2/9)(2/14)(3/28)(6/6)(7/5)(11/15)(12/21)(12/22)(12/28)

Suburbia: (3/27)(4/11)(4/12)(5/18)(7/3)(9/16)(10/3)(10/11)(11/22)(12/25)

Trajan: (4/20)(5/16)(6/8)(7/5)(7/25)(9/27)(10/13)(12/6)(12/20)(12/26)

I'm in, despite being at the halfway point.

I've been doing a little more game playing than usual, due to my other favorite website being hacked and temporarily closed down. I'll add my last one after I've thought about it for a little bit. While I have plenty of people to play with, two game groups plus friends and family, no one seems to like the same things. So I play quite a variety of games, as you can tell just by this list.

1. Ticket to Ride

2. 7 Wonders

3 rounds played 6/2, 1 round 6/19
3. Tichu

4. Catan

5. Bazaar

Two rounds played 6/3
6. Boggle

7. DOG

8. King of Tokyo

3 rounds played 6/2, 1 round during Origins.
9. Mexican Train

10. TBD

Star Trek Deck Building Game: The Original Series (1): 7/6 7/6 8/4 8/6 8/13 9/1 9/28 11/22 12/1

These are all games that I want to play more often, but more importantly that I want to start recording my plays of so I can keep track of them better. Morels may not seem difficult to get done, but as much as I love the game I hate sliding the cards over so I can usually only handle one game of it at a time, so I'm hoping this helps me get past that

Honorable Mention that wouldn't count because it's too easy to finish:

Legendary (53): (92) I've played this over twice as many times as I have recorded. I got lazy with them when I was posting Challenges.

Edit (7/8): Changed out Field Commander: Napoleon for Commands and Colors: Ancients and Kaiser's Pirates for Fleet. FC:N is just not that much fun right now for me, and my wife wants to play more Fleet so that one is more likely to get play time.

Edit (8/3): Woot! Reached the halfway mark and have two games completed on the list! Getting to work on the rest!

I decided to skip the 10x10 challenge initially because, while I thought it was a fun idea, I didn't want to plan what games to play. I mean, who knows what we're going to be addicted to this year.

Since this is no longer restricted to a fixed 10 games, I'm in!

Legendary: A Marvel Deck Building Game

We already have over 50 plays and will likely play more. We were already pretty addicted to this; coming up with a co-op variant just intensified it.

Pathfinder Adventure Card Game: Rise of the Runelords – Base Set

Around 50 plays already. It will get another 15 when the last expansion comes out.

R

A favorite filler while waiting somewhere. Over 20 plays already, will likely get more.

Marvel Dice Masters: Avengers vs. X-Men

Granted, we're playing with variants, but we've found this quite addictive. Over 20 plays and we just got it a month or so ago.

Hanabi & Ikebana

One of our favorite quick two player games.

Steam Park

Enjoyable light game.
Played on 8/1 - taught 2 new players at a convention (well, Lisa really did the teaching) and had a very fun game!

Space Alert

My favorite game of all time! But it is so much better with at least 4 players that I don't get to play nearly as much as I would like. I'm hoping I get to 10 plays though!
Two more plays on 6/21! This brings us to 10. I really want to get an all experienced group to play with the expansion though.

Invasion Defense

Print and Play light co-op game that Lisa and I made. Another good "over lunch" game.
Played again 6/8!
Played again 6/21.
Played again 8/10. A very close win. We had several turns where disaster was likely, and mostly lucked out. We were both recovering from being sick though, and maybe weren't playing quite our best.
Played again 9/28. Played with 2 invasion cards, which makes for a tough game. We had a few turns of major peril (including one turn where only one out of three card flips would NOT kill us), but lucked out and won!
Played 12/11, finishing the set.

Reserved for an old favorite -- CANCELLED 12/22 --

I don't know what this game will be, but I'm going to try to get 10 plays of some old favorite game that deserves more plays.

EDIT 8/11: OK, I'm going to tentatively pick a few possibilities here so I can have something to track:
(A) Eclipse. Awesome space empires game.

(B) Factory Fun. Great puzzle game. Used to play this a lot.

Played 8/14! Lisa clobbered me. Made too much of a mess of my factory.
Played 815! And I lost yet again.

(C) Shadowfist. A favorite old CCG. I've got a bunch of new cards since they went non-collectible that I haven't used yet.

Several plays 8/17! We started an 'evolving draft' game using the Revelations and Reinforcements card sets. (An evolving draft is a strange thing we do where, rather than drafting a deck up front, you add a few cards after each play).
Played 8/21! Awesome play with a lot of back-and-forth.
Played 8/28! I finally won a play!
Played 9/20! We tried a slight variant to encourage more early attacks.

EDIT 12/22: OK. I am removing Shadowfist and ditching the entire "old favorite". That whole last 4 plays thing is causing we way too much stress. I mean real, unpleasant stress. My brain just cannot process that this is just a game and doesn't matter; it's an incomplete task.

Instead, if could be Tash-Kalar: Arena of Legends, which I'm now up to 15 plays of for the year (with several from testing the Everfrost expansion, which is awesome!).

Or it could be Tajemnicze Domostwo, which I just got at BGG.Con at have already played 17 times.

Whichever...

Reserved for a game I don't have yet

I don't know what game this will be, but I have a bunch of KS games on the way and I'm sure I'll buy more games. I'll try to get 10 plays of some exciting new game.

EDIT: I'm really hoping this is going to be Shadows of Brimstone: City of the Ancients. Crossing my fingers that it is good enough!

EDIT 8/11: OK, I'll go ahead and optimistically put Shadows of Brimstone. Of course, that means it not only needs to be good, it needs to actually get delivered this year with enough time left to play 10 times.

EDIT: 11/14: Brimstone arrived this week, and we spent most of Thursday playing. 3 plays!
EDIT 11/15: And most of Friday and Saturday - 6 more plays!
EDIT 11/17: And 3 more plays Saturday. Hmm. This is why my "addiction" games don't tend to be very exciting on this list. One weekend and we're at 10 plays.

EDIT 8/11; If Brimstone fails me, my alternate is Zombie 15'.
But that's kind of boring, because it took like 2 days of play to get to:

=== CHALLENGE COMPLETED ===
Well, I have learned that playing 10 games 10 times each is very easy for me. However, predicting what games to play in advance is incredibly NOT my thing.

When all is added, I played the following games 10+ times:
Legendary: A Marvel Deck Building Game - 100
Pathfinder Adventure Card Game: Rise of the Runelords – Base Set - 64
Hanabi & Ikebana - 36
R - 34
Marvel Dice Masters: Avengers vs. X-Men - 33
Pathfinder Adventure Card Game: Skull & Shackles – Base Set - 25
Zombie 15' - 22
The City - 21
Shadows of Brimstone - 20
Tajemnicze Domostwo - 17
Tash-Kalar: Arena of Legends - 15
Galaxy Defenders - 14
Quarriors! - 13
Star Realms - 13 (plus several hundred app plays )
Space Alert - 12
Love Letter - 11
Pandemic: The Cure - 11
Bruges - 10
Invasion Defense - 10
Steam Park - 10

Have a Happy New Year everyone!
