It's been a bit of a slow month for trying new games, with many of my plays being games I've played before... Of the handful of new ones (Blue Moon, Glory to Rome, Die Dolmengötter, The World Cup Game) Leonardo stood out as the best of a pretty good bunch.

It's a very clever resource management game, with an area control element and some card drafting thrown in. Played over 9 rounds (7 full, and 2 finishing rounds), players must assign their workers to different areas, either in the city or in their own workshop(s). In the city you can buy resources for your inventions, upgrade your labs, recruit more assistants or visit the council, whilst in the lab they work towards completing the inventions demanded by the city.

It's a gamers game, with little margin for error or miscalculation, as I found out to my cost in the game I played. Also, having only a small number of full rounds makes it feel very tight.

Cheeky little filler that's bound to get more table time at the club which is great news as far as I'm concerned. Tense, dirty and surprisingly tactical.

Very close finish between this, For Sale, and i'm the boss.

Played several really good new games this month...

I think HTMF wins because I can play it with my kids.

I got this at the beginning of the month when I went on a little splurge and bought 3 games. I had only read about it here, and it sounded like it would be my type of game. I've played it 6 times as a 2-player with my wife and last weekend got to introduce it to 3 others and play my first multi-player game.

So far I like it a lot. It's an area majority game that has you balancing the tiles you can win with the right to take favored spots in the museum. The museum spots act as victory point multipliers for the tiles. When you go to the museum, you don't get a tile. Also, the tiles represent patrons who give you special abilities that are important.

There are a lot of decisions packed into a quick game (45-60 minutes). I think this is going to see a lot of action at my house.

I played Traumfabrik for the first time this month and eventhough I am a horribly timid bidder when playing new auction games, I enjoyed this quite a bit!

Carc the City was runner-up. While not a big fan of Vanilla Carc, I enjoyed playing this version.

This was a tough decision this month since I've played so many new ones. But Blue Moon City is a game I HAD to have after playing it. It's easy, fairly quick, colorful, and everything seems to work together well. I enjoy the building aspect of the game and making contributions. Very good game which I still think should have won SdJ, but oh well.

Other notables this month: Goa, Hammer of the Scots, Fury of Dracula, Louis XIV, & Tempus to name a few. Been a busy gaming month for me! All these great games, makes me wish I had more time to play them all over and over! :-)

Only new game I've played this month, but it was good, chaotic fun. We played with six one day at lunch and due to the makeup of our group, it was definitely more of a "see who I can screw over," rather then "see how far I can advance my position" game.

This month's best game is a toss up between Tikal and von Manstein's Backhand Blow, but I'll give the nod to Tikal. The game is beautiful to look at, is easy to play, is deep with just a touch of cutthroat, and the theme fits the mechanics.

von Manstein's Backhand Blow is a tense, fun moderate complexity wargame. The randomness of the chit pulls add a lot of fun and uncertainty to the game, and helps keep the unit density on the map low.

Honorable mention: Liberté (Warfrog)

Have had a dreadful month in terms of game playing, but this one, picked up from the Funagain spring cleaning sale would have ot be it. Played with my family. My six year old daughter won by a mile, and I'm still not sure how. She always helped everyone, and picked up a lot of bonus laurels for doing so. I'm guessing our next game will see some different approaches.

Played this for the first time on Thursday. I thought it was a fun game, even though I got my bee-hind handed to me. It was the first time playing for both of us, so there were a few rulebook references. This game was so alike to Hammer of the Scots, that when I was playing, I had forgotton about alot of the different things I could do, because they aren't things you can do in Hammer. I might have had a chance had I utilized all the resources available to me, but it was a learning game. I hope to play it again soon.

I managed to play 13 games for the first time in September, and I think Ys just edged top spot.

It's a tight game of semi-blind, semi-open bidding for majorities in gems, with market manipulation to determine what each gem colour is worth.

Other contenders: San Marco, Ca$h'n'Gun$, Terra Nova, Leonardo, John Silver, La Strada.

This has been on my radar for some time, so when I saw it at Triadcon, I snapped it and its three companions up (Sergeants! in the Sand, Sergeants! Expansion and Sergeants! Scenarios Book 1).

What a great little game! It has all the tactical joy of any one man/one counter game that I've ever seen, and the games rules are only four pages long. Simple, fast and fun, what more could you ask for?

This is a tough one for me, but I'll have to go with Loopin' Louie. I lucked out, finding a perfect copy of this game hidden in a lot of five old stale MB games on ebay. The old games (broken down versions of Clue, Payday, etc.) went to the garbage, but this baby spent weeks set up on the gaming table. It is good, ultra-light fun and pretty addictive too.

Other great new-to-me games this month that I really liked were Goa, Blue Moon City, Rum and Pirates, and the Friends and Foes expansion to Lord of the Rings. I

So far, September 06 has been the most game-filled month for me on record, and it was easily Diamant that played a major role. The game is overproduced but yet it is the overproduction of it that has engaged so many people.

For me, it means Diamant is a game that I can take pretty much anywhere for lots of people. It's dead easy to learn and is great for large social gatherings.

Well, there were only five games I played in September that were new to me. Canal Mania really hits my sweet spot for games: pick up and deliver, connections, logistics, with a little randomness. And while two hours pushes the edge of my tolerance, it does stay within, so I have to go with this. The other choices?

Labyrinth - Nice and quick, a good filler, and I imagine great with kids.
Cosmic Eidex - I'm a big trick-taking game fan, and this game has huge potential for me, but I'm still at the bottom of the learning curve.
Entdecker: Exploring New Horizons - I really liked half of the game (the island exploration) but didn't like the huts so much.
Ticket to Ride: Europe - It, and the original as well, were good, and I'd certainly play again. Probably rates third of this list of five.
