My last day of work: Dec 20th
My next day of work: Jan 6th

Gaming...how much of it can I get in?

Obstacles...and I mean this in the lightest sense.
d10-12.75 year old daughter. She is full of energy and sometimes when she goes to bed, I just want to sit on the couch.
d10-2Christmas...while still a great day for gathering with family, our family is ALL close and so my wife and I will be celebrating at 4 locations (down from 5 last year)...in short no time to sit down and play a game.
d10-3My wife...she will play games, but gaming has been very very limited with her as of late. She has finished her Masters though, and so I will take this opportunity to ease her back into it with some light strategy to start.
d10-4My wife...I expect to get maybe 2 game sessions (3-4 hours) with friends before I get the "Is it so bad spending time with us?" speech.

Gaming Goals
ETo average a minimum of 1 game a day.
EEEExtended goal, to average 1.5 games per day.
ETo play at least one game on Christmas Day.
ETo play War of the Ring (Second Edition) at least once.
ETo play Washington's War at least once.
ETo play Sekigahara: The Unification of Japan at least once.
ETo play Twilight Struggle at least once.
EEEExtended goal, to play two of these games twice.
ETo play A Game of Thrones: The Board Game (Second Edition) at least once.
ETo play The Pillars of the Earth at least once.
ETo teach my wife Francis Drake.
ETo play games with two couple friends.
EEEExtended goal, to play games with three couple friends.

*EDIT - New Section - Will be updated as good ideas come*
Strategies to Get in More Gaming Opportunities
Pick up more chores around the house without being asked.
Wrap presents with daughter so I have more time to play during nap/bed times. *DONE*
Distract wife with craft project to leave me an afternoon or two to play during nap times...come on brain get churning...

Friday night - After taking my daughter on a drive around to see all the Christmas lights we played a brief "alternate rules" version of this before packing her off to bed with the promise of playing a full game the next day.

Saturday morning - We played the full version with the real rules... granted my daughter is not quite 3 so she needed a little help and we only got about halfway through the game before she lost her attention, at which point we just ended the game.

Saturday evening -
Played with (River I, Traders & Builders, Inns & Cathedrals, Mini Expansion)

After a day of building snowmen and chasing my little kiddo around the house a little mental exercise was just what the doctor ordered.

A crushing defeat for my wife...probably not the best way to ease her back in to gaming, but playing with my 3 year old all day left me all sorts of unused mental strategery just dying to ooze out. I won all 3 goods from Traders & Builders, I closed out both Cathedral cities, and my pig farm touched 8 closed cities.

Sunday evening -
I was hoping to teach my wife Francis Drake, but we got home late from the in laws after going to dinner. After putting our daughter to bed my wife mentioned that she didn't want anything complex...so I decided to just go with something she already knew. Per my play stats as shown at http://friendless.servegame.org/dynamic/index.html we hadn't played this in 674 days...so I thought it was time to break it out.

Things were looking good for me early, but a late blitzkrieg by my wife made me nervous as it led to me failing two of my 6 tickets. However she only completed 2 of 3 tickets, though she did get the longest train bonus. Overall this was a pretty bizarre low scoring game by us.

My daughter asked to play "Hey That's my Fish" again today. We played two games with two rounds each with the tiles upside down where we just randomly pick the upside down tiles. This is pretty much blind chance but just up my 3 year old's alley.

Thursday about noon-

After two days of no games, I was starting to get pretty excitable. Luckily my daughter got us right into the spirit by asking to play with her new game she got for Christmas. After a good bit of time putting the stickers on we got into the game. I did a quick overview of how the game works and we started to play. Just after we started playing my daughter got scared her chickens would get knocked down and so she started blocking Louie with her hands. Once we finally were able to talk our daughter down on not blocking Louie we started the game anew. About 2 revolutions in there was a knock at my door...it was my mother...this meant we would not get to finish the game as my daughter was immediately distracted, and the plans my wife and I had to play a game during my daughters nap were all but shattered. I love my mom...but man talk about bad timing!

Results:
Wife: Won as her opponents left during the game.
Daughter: Scared of Louie hurting her chickens ran to play with grandma.
Me: Demoralized realizing no games would be truly played.

Thursday afternoon-

Somehow, luck favored me, and my normally long winded mother was hoping to head home and take a nap so she did not stay overly long. Unfortunately the plans to teach my wife Francis Drake fell through, as we no longer had the time, but I was able to pull this puppy out which hadn't been played in nearly a year. My wife was in the lead early, but having not played for a while she pulled the rookie mistake of using to many of her resources the rounds she got them instead of holding them over for more valuable returns. In the end I built up quite an engine and scored 22 points in the final round to snag the victory!

Friday afternoon-

I got my wife an iPad for Christmas. She wanted to do some shopping, and my daughter was taking a nap. First I tried to get a game of Twilight Struggle on Vassal, but that didn't work out so instead I looked for a game of Eclipse on the iPad. It didn't seem like anybody was around to play a game online so I took a stab at a 6 player offline game. I played as the Hydrans. My opponents were a difficult Planta, a difficult Orion, a normal Eridani, a normal Terran, and a passive Terran.

Things started out bad when I was placed right next to Orion, however I was able to wall myself away from him, and quickly established friendly relations with the Terrans to my other side...however I made a mistake of closing myself off completely with only the potential to truly get 5 hexes and no access to the Galactic Center. Lucky for me the Terrans next to me failed when they tried to nab one of my Ancient hexes which would have left me with only 4 potential hexes. I was able to take that hex the next turn and used a heavy science focus to build myself up. While I was doing this the Terrans were being hassled to their other side by the Terrans, and the Eridani who were the first to strike through the GCDS. This infighting allowed me to build up enough to defend myself when the Terrans eventually went traitor on me. In the end I had two sets of Terrans striking at me with Missile ships for the last 3 or 4 rounds, but clever positioning and a hefty dose of double hull allowed me to maintain control of my hexes and even pick up 5 points worth of Terran hexes. Nobody else had the science to strike at warp portals so I didn't have to cover my back side to Orion or Planta who were duking it out in the middle of the galaxy.

Results:
Hydran (Me) - 37
Plant - 32
Orion - 31
Eridani - 23
Terran Rep - 23 (That's what they get for taking me on)
Terran Conglomerate - 22 (That's what they get for taking me on...traitors)

Friday evening-

We had some friends over for dinner and games. After eating and putting our daughter to bed we all agreed something simple and quick, that we've all played before would be the best idea. With all the running and holiday party's getting to bed at a reasonable hour would be a good thing. So we played 7 Wonders with Leaders and Cities, and the Wonder Pack. The first game went so fast we got to play a second time. As you'll see, it was ladies night tonight.

Saturday morning-

This was just our normal gaming group. We only had 3 today and Brass was near the top of our play list for 3. My buddy Kevin was playing for the first time. I had played twice before online, and our other buddy Drew was the seasoned vet. After the canal phase I had the lead with 45, Drew had 39, and Kevin had 33. Drew had a significant amount of money comparatively going into the rail phase.

In the rail phase Drew took charge with the rails, where I was a close second. Kevin kind of got into rails late but did well in building. Drew also did well in building, but I overbuilt 4 of Drew's buildings. We all felt Kevin was in 3rd, and while I had the lead after round one it looked as if Drew was best positioned at the end of the rail phase.

Saturday afternoon -

No luck getting my buddy to play TS online or another buddy over for a live game...so went looking for an online game of Eclipse. Played a good tight game as Orion against a MrDukk as Hydran. My initial draws were a little bleak but I had some luck turn 4 that helped keep me in the game. Hydran got the GCDS first but I had double shields and neutron cannons so a stalemate emerged. Scoring wise he was in the lead going into the last round protecting the GCDS and a loose flank for wormhole generator which he saw coming. Unfortunately he underestimated how much movement I had and I was able with some throw away fighters get one of my dreadnoughts to his home system which had a monolith. The board was a 32-32 tie but I had one discovery tile tucked away.

Sunday afternoon-

I asked my father in law and brother in law if they'd be up for a game of this for some good old fashioned back stabbery. My brother in law has watched the show, and father in law the show and read the books. Neither are really into games though. Afterwards my wife was going to make us all dinner and have the rest of her family over as well. To make sure we were done in time we were going to start at 2:00 as I expected a slow start. A couple hours before start time we had to push it back to 2:30 to coincide with halftime of the Lions game. I immediately started stressing.

In the end I was able to calm myself down and decided to just play to 6 castles as that should go quite a bit faster than getting that elusive 7th. Even though we didn't start rules until almost 2:45 we were up and playing by about 3:15. I was Lannister, my brother in law was Stark, and my father in law Baratheon. The first turn I helped them both with pretty standard openings on reworked orders after seeing some poor first play openings. On the second turn my brother in law had it pretty much figured out, though it took about 4 turns before my father in law had figured out how the placing orders all worked together. End of turn 5 my father in law noted that he though this was a pretty fun game, and my brother in law agreed.

As Lannister I set myself up pretty solid early and had total control of the sea...but in the end my attempt at playing fast led me to visually miscalculate a couple key battles that left me pretty much out of it going into turn 6. Baratheon had started really slow, and thus I had mostly left him alone, but suddenly going into turn 6 he had 5 castles and the ability to strike a heavy force at my homeland of Lannisport to get his 6th. Likewise Stark was sitting on 5 castles with a heavy force sitting outside of Lannisport. At this point it looked like it was basically a race and sure enough we had a clash of kings to bid on the influence tracks. Baratheon came in first, Myself second and Stark 3rd who focused on making sure he stayed at the top of the fiefdom track.

For orders I tried to stir the pot telling them both to do this and that...that I would support the one, and then I'd turn to the other and tell them I'd support them if they did this. In the end Baratheon opted for a 3 march build up to bringing a heavy force against me in Lannisport, while Stark decided to just support Riverrun and make a run at the Eyrie. Unfortunately he had forgotten to factor in his supply limits which left him one troop short of beating the neutral force there. Seeing what Baratheon had in mind I triggered a wasted battle to get my hand of house cards back. My brother in law...much to his credit, saw this, and realized if he spent a wasted battle action he could use Roose Bolton to refresh his hand as well...and that this would allow him to bring his army of 5 on Cracklaw with Ned Stark, plus the Valaryian Steel blade to beat his father who had 7 combat strength and already had used his Stannis card in battle.

In the end I was able to hold off my father in laws attempt at Lannisport, and my brother in law was able to capture his 6th castle for the win.

Brother in law - King of Westeros

Monday night-

My wife made plans to go out with the girls...so I made plans to play Sekigahara with my buddy Tom. This was my second play and his first. I played as Ishida, a side I had not played with before. I had a good starting draw and was able to knock out his Date army with my Uesegi army turn/week 1. Turn/week 2 I was able to take out his Fukushima army which gave me pretty solid control of the "Ishida" side of the board, though Tokugawa captured my castle closest to Uesegi. At that point I started a pretty heavy movement campaign to start moving toward Tokugawa.

Week 4, my heavy movement has given me control of majority of castles and a heavy majority of resource points...things are looking up. However at that point Tom brings 4 units from his Maeda force...now up to 8 blocks to attack me in Kyoto. I remind him this brings the Mori units directly into play for the battle, bringing my force to 12 blocks. He tells me he is aware, but that he doesn't worry him as he has a big handful of cards, but my aggressive movement has brought me down to 3 cards...LESSON LEARNED! I lose the battle, but am able to play a 2 round back and forth with him that weakens him to the point that he has to abandon the campaign against Kyoto castle...at which point I strike back.

By the end of my first week 6 action, I have taken full control of the Tokaido "highway" from Edo to Kyoto. I have solid control halfway down Nakasendo with no threats near the highway. I've literally wiped out all remaining resistance in that portion of the board...however at this point Tokugawa has looped back around freeing the Date mustering point, has capitalized on all resource points on his side of the board and is working his way back to his Capital of Yedo. End of week 6 he has taken control back of Edo. To start week 7 he uses Tokugawa to attack the castle next to Edo in a 7 (Tokugawa) to 6 (Ishida) block battle. The battle is one that the people of Japan still write songs about to this day. His attacking force scored its 21st impact on his final card carrying my 20 impact. Loyalty challenges were unsuccessfully attempted by both sides but could have been successfully played at different times in the battle. A major victory for Tokugawa.

However as is often the case Tokugawa's late heroics were to little to late. By the time the battle was over Ishida had used the 7 weeks to consolidate enough power to win the war. For what it is worth, Ishida did not need to use the final action phase of week 7 for he had already secured Toyotomi's birthright.

Results:
Me (Ishida) - 14 influence
Tom (Tokugawa) - 13 influence

Monday night-

After a full campaign victory in Sekigahara, we busted out Magic. I have 3 buddies who have been trying to get me into this game but have been going about it poorly. Basically I play it very in-often and whenever I play they give me new decks with new things to learn, let alone having to learn what the opponent has as well...and some times they just give me complex decks as well...basically it is terrible. I don't think the game is bad, but the experience usually is.

Well now Tom wanted to go about it a little differently. He and one of the other buddies each built me a deck so I could be very familiar with my own deck. I am fine with this as I don't even mind losing, I just hate completely relearning everything every time I play it because I have no intention of buying into cards etc.

We played best of three, I used a deck I have played with once before. The first game Tom crushed me with a new deck he had just built for himself and didn't expect much out of. The second game I held the advantage for most of the match, but I could mana flooded a bit towards the end which stopped me from being able to finish him off.

Tom - 2

Tuesday night-

We had a couple friends over for the night (Dave and Lacey) and played this for fun as it was a couple where the gal is pretty much only into party games. It was a tense affair, where everyone was highly focused. I have also learned that my wife is an assassin when it comes to this game.

Lacey - 3 Wins

Wednesday morning-

My buddy Dave had stayed the night with his wife and child and we were hoping to get something like Sekighara or Twilight Struggle in, but by the time we were done with breakfast etc we just didn't have the time, so we decided to play this two player. He overextended his meeples early and it was mercy that had me give him 3 back on a city we split 3-3. Bad choice, he put up a heck of a fight that came right down to the wire.

Me - 255
Dave - 243

Wednesday afternoon- NEW YEARS DAY

We decided to have friends over for New Years Day to just hang and maybe play some games. Kevin and Jessi were the first to arrive and brought Qwirkle and so we broke into that while we waited for others to arrive. This was the first time my wife and I had played it. I finished the game with a Qwirkle that scored me 20 points. In some ways this was Kevin and I exacting revenge for the beating we took in 7 Wonders the other night.

Results:
Me - 134
Kevin - 113
Jessi - 94
Anna - 90

Wednesday afternoon- NEW YEARS DAY

After Qwirkle Kevin and I got in a quick best of 3 in Magic. His deck was not what I expected and so he quickly disposed of me in the first match. I then was able to recover to get the second match, but he had a better draw for the third match.

Kevin - 2

Wednesday afternoon- NEW YEARS DAY

A pair of the couples my wife had invited over were unable to make it...due to colds or hangovers, I'm not quite sure. She had wanted to keep the party small and small is what she got as there only ended up being 3 couples. While the gals chatted, Kevin, Dave and I pulled this classic out. This was easily the highest scoring 3 player game I can think of. I only drew 4 blue tiles all game...that hurt. All in all an absolutely brutal game for me.

Results:
Dave - 17
Kevin - 14
Me - 6

Thursday evening-

It finally worked out we were going to get our daughter to bed at a decent hour to try and make sure that she was back in the habit when our break sadly comes to an end. Then we were going to play Francis Drake using

. Unfortunately she was pretty wired after The Little Mermaid so we didn't get her to bed until about 9...nearly 40 minutes after our goal.

I didn't wait for the discussion to come up on whether or not we had enough time I just started setting up. My wife didn't complain which I took as a good sign. Now she is not a huge fan of learning new games, especially because she already feels I have more than enough games as is...but it was not a good sign when she literally looked like she was about to nod off during rule explanation. I knew she was tired so I was as gracious as I could be and said, maybe we ought to just not play tonight as I didn't think she would really be into it as tired as she was. She said no, maybe once the game started she would perk back up.

So we finished rules and played through the first round. I helped her a bit through the first round on what was happening etc. The second round went quickly and she helped me do a quick turn around with the board into turn 3. I was up by about 12 points going into the 3rd round, so she had the advantage in the Plymouth Harbor stage.

Now indigo had been closed off for the first two rounds and we were both just that one good away from complete sets, so turn order for outbound sailing was going to be important. She got her galleon first from tile 2, and as I took Crew from the first tile my first action I felt comfortable with my lead. Then Red (our AI player) jumped to the 4th tile (3rd available) blocking the Informer...this really wasn't a big deal, but what the big early jump ended up doing for the rest of the round was keeping Red just in front of me and snagging what I needed just before I could get it. Losing the potential to get a trade good from the Informer wasn't that big of a deal, except that I needed to make sure I got The Queen and another trade good. Well short story long, Red made a big jump and got The Queen just before I was going to go there, also took away my opportunity to make 4 supply barrels and all in all was a huge pain in my behind. In the end I had to allow my wife to sail first so that I could get my last supply barrel. Well when the smoke cleared...the rest is history as they say.

Results:
Wife - 94
Me - 89

Side note, I thought the 2 player variant worked very well. I truly enjoyed it and despite how big of a pain Red was to me the final round, I felt like the variant played with the tension I experienced in my 5 player game. Certainly luck could have gone the other way in this game for me at the end, but just like with a game containing more players I could have jumped further ahead of Red at any point and did not.

The best part was I asked my wife if she liked it and she nodded...then I asked her the really important question, which was if she would ever want to play it again and she said yes. SCORE!

Saturday evening-

After taking our daughter sledding I sat down with some hot cocoa and read the rules to this while my daughter ate as many marshmallows as she could while drinking as little hot cocoa as possible. Once I finished the rules we sat down and played a game of this with fake rules that my 3 year old could follow along. This basically meant the dice determined whether the bear or gardener moved and whoever had the most bamboo shoots of their color won...plus some bonuses for tallest bamboo shoots.

Results:
Daughter - 22 (Won with tallest bamboo as tiebreaker)
Me - 22
Wife - 20

Saturday/Sunday mornings-

Two of the guys in our normal Saturday group were in Indianapolis for the weekend, so Kevin and I decided to play this. Kevin's second play...my 7 or 8th.

Kevin was the Shadow Player and was fairly timid in my opinion. He was playing to build his forces up and then strike instead of using his early advantage to pin me in. While he delayed I used the time to move the ring and build up my forces in Gondor in Rohan. By the end of the game he had only taken 5 VP and never even attacked Rohan. He learned a valuable lesson on waiting though as I got Aragorn and Boromir to Gondor before the siege and was able to wipe out two large armies before he was able to take it. In the end though he still won via corruption.

We started the final round with the fellowship 3 steps from the Crack of Doom with 5 corruption. After the initial roll only 2 eyes were in the hunt box. By the last movement, since he had Captain of Despair there were 2 eyes, 2 FP daggers, and 2 SP daggers in the hunt box with 7 corruption...and he draws the 1 of 17 tiles that can beat me. DOH!

What a great game though! I wish it played shorter b/c it is so fun. It took about 4:45 to play though, Kevin hadn't played it in nearly 2 years, so a lot of card reading/decisioning going on. Also I screwed up two different rules on the hunt for the ring during the course of the game though, so despite the fact that I feel I was in the stronger position to win, I felt the final draw was cosmic karma getting me back for not doing my hostly duty of re-reading through my entire set of reminder notes.

Results
Kevin - Shadow Victory
Me - Free Peoples loss.
