To me, this is one of the better titles of Richard Borg's Commands & Colors system. During the last few years, this game has been in limbo, so I grabbed every expansion I could, in case it would never be reprinted. Now, with the coming of BattleLore (Second Edition), I'm glad I did.

I have a long way to go before I've played every scenario from the expansions, let alone used the units in Call To Arms-games. Like you can see in the header of this Geeklist, most of my Battlelore Expansions remain unplayed.

So this entry is meant to get my expansions played. I had a good run of vanilla Battlelore last year (even participated in a tournament on VASSAL). Preferably, I'd use the physical copies to achieve this goal. But as the ends justify the means, I might have to use VASSAL.

I like this game a lot! It has a great sense of humor, interesting combinations of races, stimulates my imagination (each race develops its own story in my mind) and is easy enought to teach. This makes it a lot more likely to be played than my other games of this type (by which I mean: games where you try to conquer a map).

This game is great. Not only has it got great looking components, but the rules are easy to teach as well. Still, it's a game in the 'easy-to-learn-hard-to-master-category' as good tactics will win the game more often than not.

For a miniatures game, this is relatively inexpensive. You can provide two players with enough options for variable army lists for the same amount of money a rulebook and starter army would cost in most miniature game systems. And the miniatures are pre-painted to a very good quality, so this game doesn't need any investments in paints and brushes.

I feel like I haven't played this game nearly enough, last year. I have been able to round out my collection of ships to an amount that I'm satisfied with, and don't see the need to add to what I currently have. Now it's time to experiment with fun lists built out of my collection. The biggest challenge of the year will be to create a rebel squad that can give the fearsome TIE swarm a run for its money.

I find this game to be a refinement of the ranged combat system from Memoir '44, combined with the better parts (like ignoring flags when supported) from the more melee-oriented Commands & Colors games.

This game rewards good positioning and planning ahead in your hand management. Since hits are really felt (they influence the amount of combat dice rolled) you don't take the same risks you do in the other C&C games.

This is a big favorite of my family. I gifted it to them as a new year's present about 3 years ago and it is one of our most played games. We don't play very cutthroat, which leads to a game unfolding like a beautiful tapestry of lush green fields specked with developing cities.

Playing this means spending quality time with people I love, so this should most definitely get 10 plays and many more.

I supported the Kickstarter campaign for this game in 2013, like I did for Zombicide the year before. I played the heck out of the first game (mostly solo, though) and I hope to do the same with this one.

I will count plays from the other big(-ish) box in the Kickstarter package, Zombicide: Toxic City Mall, here too.

This is a game I find very easy to teach to all kinds of people, even (especially) those who normally don't enjoy games. By the time the third round start, everybody is having fun and laughing. An ideal game to play after a dinner (or other formal occasion) with friends.

If I remember correctly, this was my second solo/co-op game (after Ghost Stories). I really enjoy the atmosphere this game creates with just some cards. The game really keeps you on your toes, it can feel as if victory is within your grasp, and then it suddenly spawns a new wave of genestealers and victory gets taken away from you again.

This makes winning the game feel all the more rewarding. If, after some time, the genestealers become a bit boring, it is easily remedied with the Tyranid Enemy Pack.

Pandemic has just the right amount of rules to envoke the theme, but not too much to get bogged down. That's why it isn't that hard to teach to non- or light gamers (who are amazed at the existence of a game where you don't try to defeat the other players, but the game itself).

The down-time is almost non-existent due to the players being so involved in solving the puzzle (which eradicating the viruses to some degree is). There's a risk of a bossy player pointing the others to what they should do, but in a grown-up group, this shouldn't be too much of a problem.

I haven't played this as much as it deserves to be played, and I'd like to change that this year.

The game that got me firmly hooked into this hobby.

I initially bought it at a toy store with a gift voucher I had gotten for my birthday (meant to buy puzzles with) to check if the Commands & Colors rules weren't too complicated for my taste, as I was thinking about buying into Battlelore at the time.

I had a blast with this game, and by now own every expansion ever released. I bought Battlelore as well, a year later, but it hasn't been played nearly as often as this one has.

Very nice components, the little army men remind me of when I was a kid and played with little army men all around our house and in our garden. The rules are very easy to learn (and hard to master). Good variety of scenario's in de base game and online at DoW's website.

I just don't have the time to play all those scenario's I've acquired over the years...
