Welcome to the 2014 edition of the Thrift Find of the Week!
This is where the week's greatest thrift find is named, to be honoured by all thrifting Geeks. Each game mentioned is also linked back to the original post on the thrifting list. The Geek who found the winning game also receives one shiny new GeekGold in commemoration of this event. Brought to you by your friendly, neighbourhood Secret Cabal:
The criteria for a winning find include (but are not limited to): the coolness of the find; how rarely it's thrifted; game rank; game cost; production value; general rarity; and whatever other whacked-out reasons the Secret Cabal decides to use. Feel free to add your comments, commendations, condemnations, et cetera -- although we hasten to add that our decisions are infallible.
Be sure to subscribe to this list so you can be notified of the latest winner.

1 - 5 January 2014
Welcome back! Despite this first thrifting week of 2014 being truncated by two days, your friendly, neighbourhood Secret Cabal was edified by the quality of finds.
Haul of the Week: No question about this one. The tip of the hat goes to CinMel who collected quite the Heroscape haul. Included for her $4 were Rise of the Valkyrie, Swarm of the Marro, Thaelenk Tundra, Raknar's Vision, Zanafor's Discovery, Thora's Vengeance, and Dawn of Darkness. You can see the remarkable haul starting here.
Thematics: Dungeon Twister for $4; and Antike for $10.
Eurogames: Tigris & Euphrates for $4; Carcassonne: Hunters and Gatherers for $1.25; two copies of Dixit (one here for $6 and one here for $2) and a Dixit: Journey for $3; Pandemic for $3; Ingenious for $3; Dominion: Seaside for $2; TtR: Europe (in shrink) for $5; Rolling Freight for £3; and The Cave for £2.50.
We have a tie for the runner-up position. First, is the amazing Dominion Big Box for $2, found by KTSlayer. Paired with it is fur94's beautiful Up Front for $5.
Drum roll please! The first 2014 winner of the Thrift Find of the Week is a previous winner. None other than
for his lovely and most unusual discovery of THE FURY OF DRACULA (the old one) for an epic price of £1. Spectacular!

Your friendly, neighbourhood Secret Cabal offers greetings to one and all. Pass the sangria and please prepare for the anti-climactic winner!
Abstracts: two copies of Ingenious (one here for $2.50 and one here for $1).
Eurogames: Power Grid for $1.75; Zooloretto for $4; Tikal for $1; Expedition for 50¢; Agricola for $4; Pandemic for $3; Fearsome Floors for €0.80; and TtR: The Heart of Africa for $2.75.
Thematics: A Game of Thrones for $3; Risk: Legacy for $5.75; Conquest of Planet Earth: The Space Alien Game for $5; and Mage Wars for $5.
Train Games: Railways of the World for $2.70; and Rail Baron for $3.
Wargames: The Civil War for $1.50.
There were several hauls which could have won Haul of the Week. First, there was Maverick_Ideal's haul of Arkham Horror, AH: The King in Yellow, AH: The Curse of the Dark Pharaoh, AH: The Lurker at the Threshold, Dungeon Fighter, and 15 sealed Arkham Horror minis for $40. Second, was fastfrank23's haul of After the Holocaust, Invasion: America, Dunkerque - 1940, Destruction of Army Group Center, Turning Point: The Battle of Stalingrad, Kampfpanzer, The Moscow Campaign, Luftwaffe, Panzer Leader, Third Reich, Stalingrad, D-Day!, Blitzkrieg, Feudal, Drang Nach Osten!, and Their Finest Hour for $25. But those two could not touch Fierce_FishSJS and her haul of Ambush!, Ambush! Move Out!, Ambush! Purple Heart, Ambush! Silver Star, Up Front, Fortress America, and Conquest of the Empire for $40. Holy moley -- not only does she win Haul of the Week, she also takes second place overall. Nicely done.
Is that an 800-pound gorilla in the room? Oh no, that's just the weight of the board game found by the winner of the Thrift Find of the Week:
John W
United States Sacramento California
We're talking about the epic find of OGRE: Designer's Edition for $6. What? What? Sorry, what? What? How does this sort of thing happen?
Simply stunning, John. We are agog.

Your friendly, neighbourhood Secret Cabal chuckled at this week's list of 'almosts': three terrific finds which just couldn't make the final cut due to substantial missing parts. These so-near-and-yet-so-far finds were Advanced Heroquest for $10; C&C: Ancients Expansion #1 for $4; and Dark Tower for $3. More about missing bits in a moment.
Eurogames: Castles of Burgundy for $4; 7 Wonders for $5; Tikal (in shrink) for €1,50; Thurn & Taxis (and the Power & Glory expansion) for $2 each; Oasis for $2; and Settlers of the Stone Age for $1.70.
Thematics: Duel of Ages Set 1: Worldspanner for $2; Game of Thrones: The Board Game (2nd Ed.) for $3; and Thunderstone for $2.
War Games: Viking Raiders for £1; War Galley for $4; and Wooden Ships & Iron Men for $4.
Train Games: Empire Builder for $3.
Ha! Both this week's winner and this week's runner-up were missing bits too, but they were sufficiently insubstantial to be overlooked by the Secret Cabal. Our runner-up is King Zombie and his discovery of Aliens for a mere 50 pence. We can't even describe to you how close this came to winning.
But, in the end, who else but The King could overcome these tremendous thrifts to win the Thrift Find of the Week award? Answer: no one. Please be upstanding, remove your hat, and applaud
Bob Pony
United States San Jose California
for his stupendous find of GUNSLINGER for $4. The only surprise here is that he found it at Goodwill and not his magical flea market. Congratulations, my liege.

A pitcher of sangria for all our friends! Your friendly, neighbourhood Secret Cabal is in something of a deranged mood. This, however, will not stop us from having the drinks flow...
Thematics: Exalted: Legacy of the Unconquered Sun (in shrink) for $5; War! Age of Imperialism for $1; Civilization for $5; Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective for $3; Spellmaker for $2; and Castle Panic for $1.
Eurogames: Small World for $4; Caylus for $2; Carcassonne Big Box 3 for $6.50; and Dominion for $4.
War Games: A House Divided for $2.50; Fortress Europa for $4; and Empires of the Middle Ages for $2.
Train Games: Empire Builder for $2.
Haul of the Week: Kudos to artfuldodge2 for finding a nice bunch, which included Tikal for $3; Mexica for $3; Löwenherz for $2; Carcassonne: Hunters and Gatherers for $2; and more. Nicely done, Ken!
Our runner-up this week is possibly more valuable, more desirable, and more illustrious than the winner, but we did warn you that we were in a deranged mood. Never mind, this is an awesome find from Meeples Schmeeples: Ambush!, Ambush! Move Out!, and Ambush! Purple Heart for a total of $7. Wow!!!
But for sheer weirdness, rarity, and mild perversity, we award the Thrift Find of the Week (and a shiny GeekGold) to
Mr. Frothingslosh
Canada Caledon Ontario
for his extraordinary find of PLAGUE! for $5. Bring out your dead!

Your friendly, neighbourhood Secret Cabal is pleased to reprise some text from a FOTW of the past. Once again, this week is the "Noah's Ark" version of the Thrift Find of the Week. A reading from the Book of Genesis:
And of board games clean and unclean, and of every thrifty find that moveth upon the earth, two and two went in to Noah into the ark, Euro and Ameritrash, as the Lord had commanded Noah. And after the seven days were passed, the waters of the flood overflowed Goodwill and Value Village.
Two copies of Battle Cry: one here for $4 and one here for $4. Two copies of Betrayal at House on the Hill: one here for $4 and one here for $2. Two copies of Alhambra: one here for $1.75 and one here for $3. Two copies of the '99 Acquire: one here for $3 and one here for $6.
War Games: Frigate for $3; Sniper! for $3; 1809: Napoleon's Danube Campaign for $1.50; Imperium Romanum II for $2; G.E.V. for $2; Memoir '44 for $3
Thematics: Mystic Wood for $1; Formula D for $5; Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective for $3; Ricochet Robots for $5
Eurogames: Forbidden Desert for $6; Serenissima for $4; Pandemic for $4
We wish to also make an honourable mention of the superb Ganine Superba Masterpiece Salon Edition chess set thrifted for $4.
Second place, runner-up, and silver medalist is KTSlayer for the truly remarkable find of Broadsides & Boarding Parties for $2. Arrrr, there be treasure!
But holy moley, this week's winner of the Thrift Find of the Week has really found a haul-and-a-half. Congratulations to
Jason Aldrich
United States Oceanside California
for his haul which included TALISMAN DRAGONS and the TALISMAN EXPANSION SET and TALISMAN: THE ADVENTURE and the TALISMAN DUNGEON and TALISMAN TIMESCAPE and TALISMAN CITY and the TALISMAN base game all for a grand total of $8. Tremendous.
And God said to Noah: This shall be the sign of the covenant which I have established between me and all thrifters of board games upon the earth.
Amen.

Several members of your friendly, neighbourhood Secret Cabal are sleeping off the Irish flu *ahem* and so it falls to your present interlocutor to mention that there are some real doozies this week. It was not an easy choice.
Eurogames: Mystery of the Abbey for $3; 7 Wonders for $4; two copies of Pandemic (one here for $2 and one here for $1.50); On the Underground for $4; Starship Catan for $2; Ra for $4; Samurai for $3; Tobago for $4; two copies of Mexica (one here for 8 CHF and one here for $4); Java for $4; and Indigo for $3.
Thematics: A Touch of Evil for $3; Duel of Ages Set 1: Worldspanner for $2; DungeonQuest for $8; Smash Up for $1; and Battlestar Galactica for $2.50.
War Games: The Italian Front: 1915-1918 for $1.
The runner-up came oh-so-close but without confirmation of its completeness, we could not give it the win. Instead, johnostout is lauded for his find of Dark Tower for $3. Sweeeeeet!
