So I was saying to my wife how sad I was that we had played Power Grid so few times in 2013, and that Stone Age and Railways of the World got zero plays, and then I saw this list. I jumped at it and ran the 10 games by my wife. There is one game that neither of us have played (Terra Mystica) and old favourites that just haven't been played in the last year. This should be fun.

Well my wife thinks we'll get a bunch of plays for Power Grid this year, so she wanted to add Agricola in it's place. A game she really enjoys, which I haven't played in 4 years! You can see that it is getting a heck more love than it ever has!!

The bracketed number is the number of plays in 2013

The finalised list:-

01 - Agricola (0) -

02 - Stone Age (0) -

03 - Railways of the World (0) -

04 - The Manhattan Project (3) -

05 - Last Will (6) -

06 - Seasons (5) -

07 - Catan: Cities & Knights (2) -

08 - Terra Mystica (0) -

09 - Copycat (4) -

10 - Agricola: All Creatures Big and Small (2) -

Actually excited to get into this. We are getting some funny looks from people who have outgrown this game, and are moving on to Caverna. Well we get to enjoy this the way they did back in 2007.

1) 1/4/14 - Played with Heather, Sue and Jeff. WOW, this game is actually AMAZING once you add the Minor Improvements and Occupations.

2) 1/5/14 - 2 player with Heather and I. I am glad that we have Agricola: All Creatures Big and Small on the list, as I liked the 2 player well enough, but would rather play with 3 or more players.

3) 1/7/14 - 3 player with Heather, Sue and myself. I had a good strategy(ish) but Susan really hogged the wood. Interesting for future plays.

4) 2/13/14 - We taught Mike with our newly pimped out copy of the game. He picked up on it super fast, even though we threw him in at the deep end and put Occupations and Minor Improvements in to the game. He flowed well. His only questions were really about tactics, and what he "should" be doing. It was hard to tell him he had to kind of just figure it out, based on his cards. Glad we have another Mike game to play. Heather won, Mike second, and I trailed, as per usual.

5) 3/27/14 - Mike came over and we whipped out Agricola. We used the Interactive deck, which was pretty cool. I dealt 10 and we kept 7. I might eventually start doing drafts, but we need to be more familiar with the game before we do that. Heather kept complaining that she couldn't do anything she wanted to, but to me, that is the nature of the game. I felt I was in a worse position, which became incredibly apparent at final scoring. At the end of the day, Heather only missed by a couple of points!

6) 5/02/14 - Played twice on the iPad. The first game crashed on round 14, but it looked like Heather was going to beat me but not annihilate me.

7) 5/02/14 - The second game was disgusting and made me realise why I hated this game to begin with too much to do. Not enough time to do it. I prefer to play where I can See the board and what the other players are doing. Too much dodging around the device to even know what was going on. Perhaps playing against the AI some would help first. Until then I only want to play this face to face.

8) 5/09/14 - Man I have the hardest time playing this game on the iPad. I need to find some time to just play against the computer and see if I can figure out what I am doing wrong. I play just as bad when I am playing on the board, but there I at least get to see where I can going wrong. This time I thought I had enough of a grip that I was being competitive with Heather. I was wrong.

This got zero plays in 2013, and is one of our favourite games. I think there are better Worker Placements, but still excited that this has an excuse to getting a bunch of plays in 2014.

1) 1/11/14 - Play with Katie, Chad and Heather. It's fun to get back into the game and remember some of the strategies before. I need to see what Style is the Goal adds again, because it played like a pretty good Worker Placement, with other, more recent games being better for us. This is a great Gateway Worker Placement though.

I had planned on transitioning us over to Steam in 2013, but neither game got any plays, so I thought it better to go back to this top 10 game of mine. I know that it gets a lot of love from my wife.

1) 2/13/14 - I whipped this out and got the old favourite map out (England and Wales) and after a very quick game summary we got going. I followed the instructions about putting one cube less in each city (min 1 cube) and very quickly into the game we realised that we had house ruled that out before, because it made for a very short game. I ended it super quickly and won, by quite a bit. It was great to play it again and I am excited about getting at least another 9 plays this year.

2) 2/26/14 - North America - A first play of this really fun map. It played well with 3 players, and the new Ferry Lines/Snow Line/Mines really all added some fun aspects to the game. Heather and I fought over the East side of the board, and I blocked her at one point. She still easily took the win, with me in a definite last place.

3) 3/9/14 - Europe - Very glad to get this game out. We played with the Switch Markers, and the Mines. The Switch Marker came in very useful to me, at one point, but was still not enough to get me even close to a win... or a placing... Mike and Heather did a lot of good back and forth. We all made minor mistakes, but in the end Mike managed to keep the win.

And this is one of the "better worker placements" I talked about earlier. I love this game, and just want to get a bunch of plays in, and hopefully get others to fall in love with it as much as I am.

1) 1/21/14 - A BGR play with Heather, Ben, Darren and Jacob. I messed up by not using Espionage at the perfect time, or just building my Scientists up some other way. Heather got the well deserved win.

2) 1/25/14 - My brother in law came over and we wanted to play something, and I really wanted to teach him Manhattan Project, because it's amazing. Mike liked it a lot, even when Heather stomped on us hard. Heather took the win. I could have taken second, but I didn;t want it that bad.

3) 1/25/14 - I forgot that I was planning on teaching my best friend how to play, with his wife, the same night. Oh well, Heather I were happy to play twice in one day. Tommy said we taught the game really well. I think the game flows in such an easy way that it's super easy to teach without giving too much advice on strategy. The fun comes in seeing what you want to do. Tommy loved it. Heather won again.

4) 3/28/14 - SaltCon play. This game went seriously well, as everyone got comfortable with how this game is played. These guys came out, guns blazing and there was quite a lot of carnage. The last few turns took way longer than they needed to, as each person felt they could secure the win, but was missing a couple of resources... In the end I got the couple of things I needed and won the game. Quite the hard slog, when Trent was so busy gunning everyone down!

5) 4/11/14 - We had Trent and Matt (from SaltCon) over to play some games. It was nice to get back into Manhattan Project with them. I like that they know what they are doing so there's no teaching the game. (Except maybe a couple of little rules clarification questions). I felt that I was getting off to a great start. There was no pulling Heather back though. She had South Africa and was just making sure she was getting as many plans as possible to ensure she always had as much Yellowcake as she needed the whole game. She just had a tight engine together. She then built up her defenses, so no one could just swoop in and hold her back any. In the end I could blocked Heather, but all this would have done was hand the game to Trent. So I just tried to do all I could for myself and hope that they had both miscalculated what they needed to get done. It's about time to add the expansion in as well.

6) 4/15/14 - I am really just digging Manhattan Project and Last Will being on my 10 for 10. Once I am done with the 10 plays I still want it going on and on. A guy who had a SaltCon bag with him came over and wanted to join in. Mikael picked the game up fast enough, but I failed to tell him about buying some buildings earlier in the game. he seemed like he was heading in that direction by taking an engineer early in the game. Near the end Heather pre-emptively thought she had won, and this caused Mikael to feel that the game didn't give a good indication of how you have done. I feel comfortable, at the end of the game, that either I won, or I knew how many turns I had before I could build the bombs I needed. There was then a mad scramble to build a few bombs. Heather still took it two turns later.

7) 5/11/14 - After the country club Mike came over and we played Manhattan project. We played with the Expert Helpers. I might add the rockets and H bombs next time. I got spied on more times than I should have allowed. That was super frustrating. I think I might have been in more contention if this hadn't happened. Heather shows her dominance at worker placements by winning again.

8) 5/21/14 - A lot of back and forth got us to Manhattan Project. It was great to add the Roles and the extra Nations (Colin brought his copy, without the Second Stage so we played with my copy). We just kept trucking and it looked to me like Colin was going to try and do a little Air Raid. He didn't even come close, but I don't know if that was because I had built my defenses enough or whether he wanted to keep building. Colin went for Plutonium, with Spencer and I went for Uranium. I just played steadily with my China to pull back 4 of my permanent laborers off of my buildings on a turn. In my last turn I built my second bomb and loaded both the bombs and BOOM I had won my first game in a while.

9) 7/08/14 - The more I play this game, the more I just love it. I got to be Japan, and I actually would love to be them again. My power was to either get 2 fighters, or launch an Air Strike (with the ability to use fighters as Bombers). I used the Air strike once and Heather had protected herself. I decided to hurt Darren and Ben instead. I don;t think there was much I could have doe to Heather... except maybe slow her down enough for me to jump in there and get the points I needed. I had myself set up to just need to build one bomb and load it to take the game... Oh well. Kendon's first game, and it was hard to explain everything, even though I kept a lot of stuff out of the game, for the sake of time.

This might be the most cheaty one on my list, as my wife and her family are loving this game and I am sure we will find plenty of excuses to play it. My wife wanted it added to the list though, so it wouldn't get lost in the shuffle of me playing everything else.

1) 04/01/14 - April Fools everyone! It wasn't THAT cheaty when it takes over 3 months to get the first play of this in... I don;t think we will have a problem getting this completed either way. Played with a new guy to the group. He really doesn't get boardgames too much, but tried to just get it done. He did ask for help one too many times. Instead of allowing Heather, Ben and I do our actions and then grabbing whoever was available he would interject and throw us off where we were at in our turn. Not a big deal, I was just glad to get this played. I need to read the rules for Getting Sacked, as I am ready to add that in as soon as possible. Heather played a slightly better game. Jeff would say it's because she had two extra action cards, but I had zero and wasn't too far behind, and Ben had one and was WAY behind. Fantastic game!

2) 04/10/14 - Before we went to the Young The Giant concert we decided to try out Last Will, and add in the Getting Sacked modules. The game is already complete BUT it really does add to the game. I like that it focuses you for 4 or 5 rounds, about what you want to do to get rid of some of your income each round towards the ultimate goal of losing your job. I also enjoy the marriage cards. Building up your hand to play the ultimate in combos is absolute class. The additional buildings are nice little additions, and feel more like promos than full on additions. I think that I eventually want to get the Plan Order Board in place too. Heather got an Extra Messenger, and on the next round both Extra Action guys came out, leading to Heather and Mike pouncing on them. I managed to get a Helper that let me hold 2 extra cards, and this is what helped me get as close to the win as I did. We sped through the game, with only a couple of small questions about how to properly annoy your boss, as well as how the Marriage cards really work. In the end we ended with a draw... and I missed out on the win because Heather had taken an earlier spot than I did. I am glad that all three of us were bankrupt by the end, it shows how balanced the game can be.

3) 04/21/14 - Mike came over. We played with 5 things to getting sacked and 90 pounds to spend. This made the game last to the very last round, but we all managed to go bankrupt. I really was getting frustrated that I wasn't going to be able do all I wanted to get done but I actually got a really good engine going. And with the extra money meant I could keep my farm going for another couple of turns, really spending big amounts of cash. When I saw where I was at, at the end of the game I was incredibly excited... I couldn't believe that Heather got even slightly that close to me. I love that I got a nice little win!

4) 05/08/14 - Mike came over and this was the obvious game to play. I think I need to get the player order board out in the future. We had 5 demotions, and $80 to start. I just couldn't get my cards down, and enough actions to to get all the points I needed. I thought I might have some chance for second, but it really wasn't even close to that close! Heather played a stormer.

5) 07/10/14 - The Tedrows came over to play something off my 10x10, so it was this or Copycat. Heather definitely prefers this (finding Copycat to be a little simple). The Tedrows picked it up fast enough, but Last Will definitely needs a full play before everything completely clicks. It is such a fun game, and I am glad we taught them the game. As is typical for a learning game you should help them do their stuff before doing your own, or else you will get questions and lose track of what you intended to do. I will blame my loss on that... Actually Heather outplayed me, and Natalie got some good cards down. I should have definitely done better with what I had.

06) 07/17/14 - Wanted another cheeky play of this. Mike was over and this seemed perfect. It was a completely one sided affair. I didn't get an extra action friend until turn 4, which was too late. I could hold more cards, but there weren't a lot of actions on the board to take so that really messed me over, as did not having enough boards for some stuff that would have helped me spend lots of money. Heather just had it all super tight. Every turn she got to spend lots of money, using zero actions. I need to be a lot better about taking extra boards, sooner. I also kept my job just that little bit too long. We started with 5 demotions required and 80 pounds to spend.

Already getting love from my lunchtime group and my wife liked it well enough. With the Enchanted Seasons Expansion begging to get played with it this should get to its 10 plays pretty fast.

1) 01/06/14 - I wanted to teach Heather the game, in case we played it at the game store. She was tired but enjoyed it.

2) 01/08/14 - I taught my lunchtime group how to play the game. They really enjoyed it. They are fine with prebuilt or dealt sets of cards. I wouldn't mind doing a draft with the guys.

Another of my top 10 games that doesn't get to the table enough, so I thought I would push for it to be played more. A favourite of my wife's family I am sure they will be happy to get this one pushed at them. I am going to include any Catan plays here. My 2 kids are getting to love Vanilla Catan.

1) 1/10/14 - Ryan, Aubrey, Heather. We got into it super quick and this is such an amazing game. I love Cities and Knights.

2) 1/12/14 - With my wife, and 2 older kids (9 and 6). We played the basic Settlers. The boys really enjoyed it, and we are working on having them look at their cards and know what they want to do on their turn, and we could get this banged out quickly, once a week.

3) 1/19/14 - With Heather and Declan (6). Declan romped over us and we only gave him pointers as to how his 2:1 port works, and that he can trade 4:1 with anything in his hand. It was the only part he was missing. He beat us legit.

4) 2/08/14 - Heather, Declan, Elijah. Both boys did a great job and kept up really well, as well as playing as quickly as possible. In the end, the game went a little too long but I managed to get what I needed to steal longest road and build a City... FTW.

5) 5/03/14 - Well this game took a heck of a long time. We had 2 AP prone types. I actually do enjoy this game with 6 people, it just increases your chances of having the AP people involved. We played with our new 4th Edition set, and they actually changed a couple of the cards. Some make the cards easier to play, others make them so much nastier, all in all I like the changes. I was quickly left behind, with Mum trailing a little behind me eventually. There's always going to be one or 2 people who are so far behind, it just happened to be me this time. Mom had to leave right before we hit the last round, with Ryan taking over for mum. Stacie should have been building walls earlier in the game, but wouldn't allow me to let her do this, right after the Robber hit. Steve had an amazing lead, and Mike and Heather were just about to take the win, but couldn't quite get the last point. Steve got hit with Sabotage, and the Robber, in succession, putting him out of that end contention and Heather slid the final point in place to end the game.

6) 6/14/14 - We got rolling on this for the kids. It was so much fun. Elijah said that we should try and go easy on Declan. I told Elijah that Declan was better than any of us at the game, and Declan went ahead and proved me right by taking longest road and a Development Card point to win the game. Well done to the wee man!

7) 6/28/14 - One of the best plays of this game in a long time. It was so tense and a lot of back and forth. I got a super early lead and I knew this was going to be my downfall. Steve blocked me at one point, and I should have realised that I actually had precedence over him for that turn and I was going to build my path in that direction. Not saying that lost the game for me (as Stacie also blocked me later...) but it certainly hurt a lot. I saw the tide turn towards Steve, and then to Heather, and back and forth, until finally Paul swooped in and just blasted a win. It was an amazingly fun game.

8) 7/26/14 - Another fantastic play of this game. It seems like the last couple of games have played out brilliantly because everyone just knows how to play and what to go for. I got blocked out of any good sheep spots early in the game, but this didn't hinder me at all, because I had other spaces to go to, and chances to trade for sheep. I was coming in to my end game, and hadn't switched to alternative ways to get points quickly enough. Ryan was getting crazy amounts for commodities, so even though he was doing as well as everyone else with city and settlement points it was his two metropolises that sealed him the win. Mum got the longest road mid game and it wasn't going anywhere after that. Fantastic win, with tight scoring again.

9) 8/03/14 - Mum finally got a chance to play Settlers with Declan and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I was sitting in the lead for most of the game, but it was nowhere close to a commanding lead. I got cut off from a good Ore spot early in the game, but should have been able to do other things to make up for it. Even though he officially came last Declan was fine because he was tied with Mum and me. He also revealed 2 hidden points that meant that he was actually in the lead earlier in the game, and was in great contention to win, if it wasn't for Heather stealing longest road and taking the game. He was cute as well, because he kept taking his own cards, and just putting his cards into the bank without checking with me first. "I know what I'm doing daddy". Too much of his Uncle Ryan in him. I was set to take the largest army, but didn't want to until it meant something more than a guaranteed second place.

10) 8/30/14 - The obligatory Cities and Knights game for the family get together. Paul came down with Spencer, so there were a couple of kids playing in the game but neither slowed the game down significantly. Robert proceeded to block me start, but he said that he always planned on going to that spot... Uhm, so did I, and I was only 2 roads away form it, not 4.... cray cray. He then blocked Spencer, again saying it was the best move for him. I told him that it makes sense but not diplomatically for the rest of the game... I think I did dang well, considering I was blocked form a good sheep spot. In the end Heather managed to pull off a huge move that took her 2 over what she needed to get to tend the game. It was a great game, and Robert came dead last, because no one was trading with him after he blocked so many people. No one wanted to be next.

The scariest of all the games on the list, because it's the only unplayed one. If we play it, and it's a dud, then so be it. I will still try and push it through for 10 plays, and hope it improves, but I am very hopeful for it!

1) 1/28/14 - Ben wanted to teach us this game, and he and Jacob did a really good job of getting us going with the game. We punched and bagged the game as they explained it to us. The board is all completely intuitive and all I want to do in the future is get a better grip on the Town and Favour powers. I think giving a random race each time could lead to less of people gunning for the "OP" race. I won, and I feel the race helped me to that victory a LOT!

2) 3/11/14 - First time back at the game store for about a month. It was a great night. I picked up Darren to make sure he got there and Terra Mystica was the game to play. Jeff turned up and set up the game right next to where we were playing, which was fun to see the two copies of the same game going. I needed a little refresher on the rules but soon got truly trucking. There was a lot of back and forth, but I lost it with the end of game scoring. It's a nice balancing act. We play ed quickly, and Darren didn't slow it down at all, whereas Jeff's group was only on Round 2 after 90 minutes of playing...

3) 3/12/14 - nice wee play with Heather. She was Chaos Magicians and I was Darklings. The game was very finely balanced. In the end Heather said I could do a turn I had forgotten to do, which gave me 4 extra points, and the win. I felt bad about this and I definitely think the game was a fair draw.

4) 3/14/14 - After a nice date night Heather wanted to play a game of Terra Mystica. She took the Nomads and I was the Mermaids. Heather pretty much blocked me off and got herself three towns and spread out. I was super blocked and got very frustrated with my ability to do anything. Heather just whomped all over me.

5) 3/16/14 - Heather is borderline addicted to this game. She is loving trying out all the races. I think she is getting to the point where she has played most of the races she thinks are strong enough for her to work with. I really just want to try out all the races (even just play against them all at least) and am enjoying seeing what each is able to do. This game sucked for me, because I had some hope for a win. Heather just streaked ahead of me. In reality my Auren (she was the Alchemists) should have take all of the cult tracks, but I only claimed 2 and even with my blocking of Heather in a coupe of spots, she was able to claim largest area as well. The score very much shows how she just did incredibly well, all around. So even if I had done the couple of things I wanted to, it would not have been enough to claim the game...

6) 3/23/14 - Another play, but this time I managed to keep pace. I still think that I pass too early each time, but I basically do all I want to and just keep trucking. It wasn't a blow out this time, with just 9 points in it. I think I just need to look at each race and decide what I want to do, and see if I can get it to work with the bonus points for each turn.

7) 3/28/14 - I only had about 90 minutes before I wanted to start heading home from SaltCON. I saw Ben and his dad and they were really itching to play Terra Mystica, and I felt we could get it done. 2 other guys saw us setting up and asked if we could teach them the game. I politely declined, because I would be staring right at a 3 hour game, with 5 players, 2 of whom knew NOTHING about that game. I would have enjoyed teaching them the game, but it was hard with it being so late. Mark was the Swarmlings, I was the Giants, and I don't know what Ben was. Mark loved his race and really seemed to dominate. I really didn't do much of anything, although I do really like the Giants and want the chance to play them again.

8) 3/29/14 - Another day, another play of Terra Mystica. Again with Ben and his dad, but this time with Heather too. I was very excited about that part. I had the Darklings and boy do I love them. They really worked for me. It meant I had plenty of Priests and could really seal a couple of Cult tracks, when others should have been more focused on them. Although I have won before this is the first time I think I deserved the win. I really kept trucking. At one point Mark did a dig but no building, which made it a perfect spot for me to dig. I felt bad, but he is an experienced enough player that he really shouldn't have made that mistake. Excited to see what other races I can make work for me.

9) 5/13/14 - We only wanted to play one game, so I only took one game with me, and that was Terra Mystica. it was such a fun and tight game. I like that you really feel in the game, and that you have a chance, even when the score says so differently. The only bummer was that there didn't seem to be 3 black Temples in the set, but I have sent an email to Z-Man to see if I can get it replaced! I played the Nomads, and they were super fun. I have to put an asterix next to my second place finish because I completed my first town when I only had 3 buildings. IF we had realised I could have still built my town but I would have done it slightly differently... I feel good about how it worked out, either way I didn't come first and didn't get in anyone's way by doing what I did. If I had done it the way I wanted to it might have blocked Ben's largest area.

10) 5/30/14 - My 10th play of this game, and the first of my 10 for 10 challenges is FINISHED. We taught Mike, which I am sure will lead to many more plays of this game. We talked about who else in the family might enjoy this game, and I am sure it is Ryan, and that is it. The game requires too much concentration for Steve, or the girls. Mike really picked it up super fast. This says a lot about the game (and also Mike). Mike just went with it, until the logic of the gameplay took over. It will be interesting to see him in future games , as the strategies take over, more than just understanding the mechanics. He didn't lose by a terrible amount. It was down to Heather and I trying to milk the last few points out of the game, and Heather took those few more than I did to seal the game. I like that this is a game I can somewhat compete with Heather at.

I am such a Friedemann fanboy, so I think this game is underappreciated. Part deck builder, part worker placement, all tremendous fun!

1) 02/01/14 - Taught Mike the game. After not playing it since April of last year I am shocked I was able to pick up on the rules so quickly. Fantastic. I thought I could get through my deck a lot quicker than I did, and that messed me up on the last round, and Heather squarely got the win (and definitely deserved it).

2) 05/07/14 - My friend John T came over with his wife to play games. Natalie had to go and pick up Jack, and I really wanted to play Copycat again. It isn't Heather's favourite game, but I know John and I really dig it. I got a great engine going and just kept it chugging along. John T ended up ending the game a round early, which surprised me because I didn't think he could have received close to as many points as he did. This made him tie for second with Heather.

3) 05/14/14 - Just Spencer and I and we sailed through this little beauty. Tommy and some guys swung by to see what we were playing. Spencer said he is severely kicking himself for not picking this up for $15, when it is definitely worth more than that. I love this game. I understand that the replayability will wane eventually, since it really does need new cards to mix some things up a little. I "won" because we tied and the tie breaker was whoever got the most points in the last round... I felt cheap taking the win, and shows how well Spencer played the game. Definitely a game I want to play more more more. Especially with it being on my 10 for 10.

My wife and I wanted one that we could play together. This one was liked (even before I realised that Agricola wasn't as awful as I remembered) by both my wife and I so we had no problem getting it down.

1) 01/12/14 - Heather and I. Heather just played a much better game. I thought I was playing smart but made a couple of small mistakes, but I got beat so bad that I don't think fixing any of the small mistakes could have beaten Heather's perfect play.

2) 01/25/14 - Heather took one thing I wanted, after I made a silly mistake. But it seemed that for the rest of the game I was one MOVE ahead of her on what I was taking. That made it super tight, but gave me the win.

3) 03/01/14 - Nice wee prelunch game. We both played pretty even, with different routes. In the end, Heather forgot to complete one of her rows, and was focused more on the animals, and that got me the win. The buildings weren't anything special in this one, and didn't play such a huge part, like they have in other games.

4) 03/29/14 - We had a table and got trucking on this pretty quickly. I managed to do a whole lot with what I had in front of me. I even bought a couple of stalls and upgraded them to Stables! I only got one of the other new special buildings, but I managed to make that one get me plenty of points (8) I don;t think I have ever dominated this much in this game. Glad for the win. Heather still has the top score of 63.

5) 04/20/14 - I love how quickly we bash this out. Heather took one of the buildings I was looking at, which didn't bother me too much... but the second one really stung. It would have given me troughs at the beginning of the last 3 turns... I thought I had done enough, and it wasn't even close... Boo hiss.
