I recently purchased Caverna for $81, and it got me wondering what was the most expensive game in your collection.

This is for what you paid, not MSRP.

Base game only, unless you bought expansions with it as a set. Unless the expansion was the most expensive item.

Edit: 2/4/2015 - Items have been sorted by title to allow easier viewing of repeat entries.

$45 in the early 1980s. With inflation, that's about $150 in current dollars.

Other more recent purchases:
--- Steam Over Holland ($106)
--- 1880 ($120 approx.)
--- Puerto Rico 10th Anniversary Edition ($100)
--- Caverna: The Cave Farmers ($90)

I'm not counting games where I bought expansions over a period of time (Cosmic Encounter, Talisman, Power Grid)

Paid $110 for the 1999 version. I owned the old grey box version when I was younger, but I lost a lot of the tiles. When I went to replace it, I was disappointed to learn that the newest edition had cardboard tiles. When I saw the components for the 1999 version, I had to have it.

Honestly, I didn't mind spending this much. The game is a classic.

Actually it might be Agricola. Bought in Japan and due to the weight we're talking some extra import costs. So it cost me 9,500 yen. At the time it was 1,000 yen to the US dollar so in dollars that's $95. In £££ it equates to about £50 at the time.

That means that the £60 I spent for Robinson Crusoe might be the most, but by the time my bulk purchase discount came off and with the exchange rate etc it's probably worked out less that Agricola cost in real terms.

I'm not the sort of person who can spend crazy money on a game. I'm not in the position to either. Never have been.

$150 Line for life. Technically is spent more on the Dreadball striker package, but at least I'm playing that game! I wonder when AiyP will be delivered and if any expansions will ever be put out for it. I really feel hosed on this one. Frankly, I may be too bitter to even enjoy the game when it comes!

Since we're including Kickstart games, this one is top of my list, at £155... shake

However, that included a load of extras, which may count as expansions, as might the $176 for Mars Attacks: The Miniatures Game, although both were paid for as one game each!

A long time to wait for both of those, sadly...

If neither of these count, my top payment would be £75 many years ago for a second hand copy of White Bear & Red Moon.

$195, when it was solidly out of print.

Also of note:

Key Market- $175
Roads & Boats- $110
The Great Zimbabwe- $100

And a great host of games which cost in the Caverna-class of $80ish dollars, including Planet Steam, Indonesia, Greed Inc, Steam Over Holland, 18EU, etc, etc.

I bought this for noticeably over $100, don't remember the exact amount. I think my single highest board-game purchase.

Though my go-ban and stones, if translated to 2012 dollars would probably work out to noticeably more.

And, if we look at what I dropped on something like AD&D -- really hard to say what is "base game" and what qualify as "expansions". PH, MM, and DMG were about $44 when I bought them, IIRC, and in today's dollars that's about $150.

Regardless, that $95 is the most I've ever paid for a game.

I have paid a LOT for many games through the years, but I did pay about $140 for a copy of this game which did come with a copy of the S&T isue that had the "5th" siege game The Siege of Constantinople. I know years ago I paid around the same for a PRESTAGS Master-Pack.

Collecting games seems to be a bit of a sickness with me.

Mcool

I looked it up and I actually paid $165 for this game (The Art of Siege)and it is lightly used copy. And back in July I paid $150 for an un-punched Bloody April: The Battle of Shiloh, 1862. I really am a sicko............

This is my most expensive single game purchase - got it for $140 on auction a few months ago. I had the high bid at $60 until 12 seconds remaining in the auction and had to scramble to keep my bid, which was super frustrating.

I did drop more on Zombicide, season 2, but that included an expansion and promos.

EDIT: Just checked back to LudoArt's shop and the game is now priced at EUR 149,00. Seems the game is not only good as a game, but also as an investment... laugh

Back in 1995 I managed to get hold of a German game published by Kosmos and taking the German nation by storm: Die Siedler Von Catan. I played and played it during that year. Then my wife gave birth to more and more children and the gaming finished for nearly 15 years. But I kept in touch with the gaming world via the wonderful "counter" magazine (still being published) and in the middle of that hiatus a 10 year anniversary edition of THAT game was released. In a moment of madness I pre-ordered it via Leisure Games of London.
The next day I knew what a mistake I had made. I could not afford it, I didn't need it, I would never have the opportunity or time to play it...so I rang and cancelled the order.
Too late. Leisure games had sent the orders off and there was no return.

Two months later the postman knocked at the door and delivered this HUGE box with"Mayfair Games" inscribed all over it. Still regretting the day I spontaneously ordered it, and annoyed with myself for such lax financial control, I put the box away in the loft out of site and out of mind.

Back into gaming big-time from 2010, now that the children were growing up, I occasionally peer at the box with interest and intrigue. And I prefer to leave it that way. I no longer play Catan and I have too many unplayed new and interesting games to be going on with. Yet I am imagining a time, and savouring the thought of that moment, when I finally peel off the ageing tape loosely holding the Mayfair box together and open the game within. Maybe on Catan's 20th birthday, around the same time as my eldest daughter's 21st birthday, maybe then I will open the box.

All things considered, I am now glad that I spent £450 on such a treasure.

Easily the most I have ever forked over at $81. This really pushed the limits of what I am willing to pay for a game.

Luckily, there is a ton in the box, including shaped 'eeples' for all animals and resources, and a ton of cardboard. Very nice production value.

It just occured to me that I spent more on my chess set than Caverna, which I listed first.

It is the one game that always stays on the table, as I always have a long distance game going with a friend.
