I'm creating 2 GeekLists at the same time. The companion list to this one is entitled "So this is what I purchased a year ago - squash's soapbox thoughts on crowdfunding as it relates to board games":

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/172133/so-this-is-what...

I imagine I'll keep this particular list updated as games come in and new projects receive my pledges.

As with all my game purchases, I have to be exceptionally selective since my net annual game purchasing budget is 0$ (for every dollar I spend to purchase a new game, I need to earn a dollar by auctioning off games from my collection, a process which gets harder and harder the more I have to do it). So I tend to do an awful lot of research before I pledge for something, and it's paid off so far with a largely very successful track record, as you will see.

Funding platform: Kickstarter

Date pledged: November 17, 2011

Amount pledged: $60

Estimated delivery: July, 2012

Date received: February, 2013

My rating of the game: 8.5/10

My thoughts: This is another wonderful game, and has been one of my personal favourites of the past year. And it's an example where Kickstarter helped to fund above-average production values with the addition of the plastic airships (although they're almost too good, since their bulk tends to obscure parts of the game board). I still very much enjoy this game, as it scratches a similar itch to another long-time favourite, Railways of the World. Any fans of "pick up and deliver" games, simultaneous action selection, and variable player powers really ought to check this one out.

Funding platform: Kickstarter

Date pledged: November 17, 2011 (I "kickstarted" my crowdfunding participation by pledging for 2 games on the same day, this and the next one in the list)

Amount pledged: $60

Estimated delivery: February, 2012

Date received: May, 2012 (Not bad, considering the size of the game and the previous inexperience of the designer/publisher!)

My rating of the game: 8/10

My thoughts: This was truly an exceptional effort from first time designer/publisher Ryan Laukat and Red Raven Games, and he has since followed it up with further successes. The game play provides a genuinely unique take on the "4X space empire" game genre, while the production value is top notch, with a box chock full of gorgeously-illustrated cardboard.

My only real concern was that the game rules went through 2 major revisions after the game's release (and Ryan has recently stated that he'd like to give the game further major revisions), giving the impression that the game could have used a fair bit more development time.

Ultimately, while it's a great game and a lot of fun to play, I ended up selling it in a moment of financial desperation (shortly prior to completing an interesting 2-player variant that I had been working on) to fund the purchase of another space empires game (see Exodus, below).

My rating of the game: [Not yet played the new expansion]

My thoughts: I was really not wanting to support Mayday games in any manner, and I'm wishing I hadn't. However, I've owned the original Bootleggers for years and think it's an excellent game despite the fact that I normally don't enjoy negotiation mechanisms in games (the wheeling, dealing, backstabbing, and general jackassery just fit the mobster theme so well in this case), so I blindly pledged for the expansion elements.

When this reprint was finally printed almost a year and a half later, I read through the rulebook and realized that I just wasn't interested in adding the new casino elements to the game. I'm happy to have the new cards for the base game, but on their own they're not worth the money I paid or the time I waited for them.

My rating of the game: 7/10

My thoughts: This game represents one of the finest examples of a crowdfunded game done right, and it certainly must be one of the best-produced games to ever come from a rooky designer/publisher. A set of official revised rules that was released after the game had been out for a while leave some questions again about the development time, but these rules tweaks (in addition to a few I had made prior to the new rules being released) do improve game play and I respect a designer who is humble enough to take feedback from his/her fan base and alter her/his treasured creation as a result. My wife and I have had a lot of fun with Viticulture, and it seems to have been a hit with the many other gamers we've introduced it to.

And EVERYONE who is thinking about launching a crowdfunded project needs to grab a pen and spend about a week reading through Jamey Stegmaier's blog:

http://www.stonemaiergames.com/kickstarter/

The man has clearly spent hundreds of hours researching every aspect of kickstarting, producing, and distributing games, and he has been exceedingly generous in taking even more of his time to distill all that information and present it in a clear, easy to read format for all who are interested. My hat goes off to Jamey for both his work with his own game designs (regardless of what I think of Euphoria: Build a Better Dystopia whistle ) and the invaluable contributions he has made to the crowdfunding community as a whole. It is rare in life to see someone who not only wants the greatest success for his own work, but is also committed to helping so many others, even those who could be seen as direct competitors, to succeed. He deserves all the praise he gets in these forums.

My rating of the game: [Not yet played angry ]

My thoughts: As with several other items on this list, this was a big, ambitious project from a fairly new publisher based in Romania. While the game looks to be incredibly fun, the component quality was, in a word, shite. And after several attempts to organize a game day to get it played and having each of them fall through for various reasons, I eventually gave up and sold the game for a loss in a moment of financial desperation (a common theme in my life recently).

But when I saw that the second edition featured all-new component upgrades, I caved and purchased the game a second time, and am I glad I did! The physical bits are MUCH better now (although they still couldn't get the rulebook right the second time around shake ). While I feel like I know the game backwards and forwards after having read through the rulebook about 10 times now and having even worked extensively on a very large home-made expansion that adds unique races and several new twists to the game (elements that are apparently going to be included in the forthcoming official expansion, getting in an actual play of the game continues to elude me...

Estimated delivery: April, 2013

Date received: June 17, 2014 (AFTER it had already been available with local game retailers for over a week! angry )

My rating of the original edition of the game: 8/10

My thoughts: My wife and I have long been fans of the original Lost Valley, so when a reprint was announced with updated components and rules I decided to sell our copy and use the money to fund the new version. Now, 18 months later and having read about other projects from Pandasaurus Games that have experienced very lengthy delays with the games and/or rewards, I'm realizing that Pandasaurus seems to release very high quality products very long past the predicted release dates.

Yet many extra months they had to produce this game, early reports are that they still managed to screw up some of the components. They do seem to be working quickly to rectify the problems, but come on! Until the dinosaur bears manage to get their production processes a little more streamlined, I'm much more inclined to wait until the games are out in the market rather than jumping aboard any more painfully long Kickstarters.

All that aside, this one is a fun exploration game that we're looking forward to eventually owning again.

This was for the "ALLURE BICYCLE PLAYING CARDS DECK"

Funding platform: Kickstarter

Date pledged: November 4, 2012

Amount pledged: $20

Estimated delivery: April, 2013

Date received: April, 2013

My rating of the game: [N/A]

My thoughts: As with custom dice, I have a bit of a thing for cool decks of playing cards. This one ended up being a disappointment, though. For whatever reason, partway into production they decided to change the design from their promised black and gilded gold scheme to a black and white design which didn't look nearly as cool and shiny. I ended up selling the deck for a couple of bucks without even using it, and I've since found some sites that sell much cooler decks of cards.

It seems to me, though, that creating custom decks of playing cards must be a pretty easy cash grab on these crowdfunding sites if you can put together something decent, judging by the number of such projects that make money.

Date received: May 28, 2014 partial delivery; September, 2014 partial delivery; August, 2015 partial delivery; STILL waiting for a scenario pack!! snore

My rating of the game: [N/A]

My thoughts: This has got to be the most I've spent on a single game since purchasing War of the Ring Collector's Edition for $450 when it was first released. (I've since sold that game, despite the fact that it was quite literally my most prized possession, when the health and finances went south, but at least I got $2,000 for it!) I've been searching for a long time for a simple, tactical wargame, and I have high hopes for this one. Everything I've seen so far certainly points toward a top-notch production.

I just hope that I can find a regular opponent to play it with so that it won't become an expensive dust-collector like my much-loved but never-played-anymore Battles of Westeros set!

My rating of the base game: 7/10

My thoughts: I had the first edition base game with the first two expansions, then sold it when I had to start turning some of the game collection into cash. Two major factors made me re-purchase the latest edition of the base game along with Flash Point: Fire Rescue – Urban Structures, Flash Point: Fire Rescue – 2nd Story, Flash Point: Fire Rescue – Extreme Danger, Flash Point: Fire Rescue – Veteran and Rescue Dog, Flash Point: Fire Rescue – Critically Wounded Victims, and Flash Point: Fire Rescue – Explosive Objects: the new, individually sculpted firefighter minis ('cause I'm shallow like that ), and the fact that this will be a fun game to play with my two boys when they get a little older.

But despite the smoothness of the Kickstarter campaign, I'm not super-keen to support Indie Boards and Cards until such time as Travis decides to hire a PR person. He has a strange habit of immediately censoring any critical comment that could in any way be considered "negativity", and, well, it's pretty clear that he's just not very good at dealing with customers who have concerns.

My thoughts: This, like Viticulture before it, is very much a labour of love by a previously unpublished game designer who is looking to bring a spectacularly produced game to the market, but couldn't have done so without the aid of crowdfunding. Cody's behind-the-scenes production updates were at least initially fairly interesting, and though his overly fastidious attention to detail has at least in part contributed to the game's increasingly extensive and irritating delays (which I guess is what happens when you learn the industry as you go!), at least we know we'll have a great product in our hands when it finally does arrive. And most importantly, the open-ended, sandbox-style game play looks like a lot of fun - very much like a Merchants & Marauders in space. Oh, and then there's the 21 pre-painted spaceship minis...

Amount pledged: $10 (after refund - see below)

Estimated delivery: August, 2013

My rating of the game: [N/A]

My thoughts: Here's where I discovered the difference between Kickstarter and Indiegogo. I had pledged $70 on a project that was producing plastic buildings themed around specific ancient civilizations that represented cities, settlements, wonders, and other structures. As someone who is chronically addicted to upgrading and customizing the components in my games, I figured that these buildings would be perfect for the wonders in Clash of Cultures, and quite useful in other games besides.

However partway into the campaign I got wind of the fact that the fellow running it was planning to follow it up with a second campaign for plastic buildings that would be more specifically geared toward the ancient wonders, so I attempted to cancel my pledge, only to discover that Indiegogo would not allow me to do so. I contacted the project creator, who very graciously agreed to in turn contact Indiegogo to try to get my money refunded so that I could pledge on his next project instead. This ended up being quite a painstaking process with several messages exchanged between all parties, but he was finally successful in getting Indiegogo to release my pledge money (though I let him keep $10 of it for all the trouble).

There's been no word yet of his second campaign, but a quick glance at the creator's messages reveals that he is only just now getting the buildings for this project shipped out. I'll continue to keep my eye on things to see if that other one ends up materializing.

My thoughts: I had bought pretty much everything available for this game up to that point, but as much as I wanted to, I simply couldn't afford to go too nuts with all the great stuff that was being offered in this campaign. I don't even remember what I pledged for; let me look it up...

...Okay, so here's what I think I'm getting: the plastic Magic Gates, the Quest Deck, the Errant Paladin card, the painted Generals, and for good measure, a copy of Dragon Rampage. So no cool new minions, but I've got more than enough game here to last me for years.

Speaking of which, considering how faithfully Richard Launius has continued to support this game over the years with the huge amount of free, downloadable content, it's nice to see Eagle continue to build on the game as well. Between all the different heroes, minions, and generals, the published expansions, the variable difficulty levels, and the downloadable scenarios, the sheer amount of replayability in my game box is staggering.

My thoughts: This was for the book Boardgames That Tell Stories by Ignacy Trzwez Trewzr Tzzzzzzre by the designer of Robinson Crusoe: Adventures on the Cursed Island, Stronghold, The New Era, 51st State, Prêt-à-Porter, etc., and published by LudiCreations. The reason for the delayed release is that the campaign did so well that Ignacy was able to bring in several other designers and industry insiders to contribute to the book. In any case, as an avid reader in addition to being a board game fanatic, I'm very much looking forward to receiving this!

Date pledged: November 27, 2013

Amount pledged: $89

Estimated delivery: December, 2014 (Now there's a company with realistic production expectations who predicted 13 months for production and still won't be on time!)

Date received: June 8, 2015 (though still waiting for 1 pack of cards because just over 1.5 years wasn't enough time to get everything right!)

My rating of the game: [N/A]

My thoughts: I've pledged for the 2nd edition of the game, along with a bunch of the little expansions. I had not previously purchased the first edition of the game for mostly shallow reasons such as the minor production glitches (like the messed up compass on the game board) and the fact that the art was done by George Patsouras (creator of lifeless, shiny, computer-generated, doll-like board game characters that inexplicably make me want to vomit - art appreciation is extremely subjective; your mileage may vary considerably, and that's okay).

But the 2nd edition is looking nicely tidied up and has some very much improved graphic design (with the exception of those ugly and horribly cliche specialty dice that are now being proposed - and I LOVE specialty dice!), and as with Flash Point: Fire Rescue and Defenders of the Realm, this is an investment in future family gaming with my wife and two little boys.

Also, this might be the only game for which I've purchased enhanced components long before I ever owned the game! ninja

My thoughts: Game Salute certainly has made no friends amongst online game retailers, and they seem to be starting to alienate their customer base with an increasing pattern of exceptionally long delays accompanied by perhaps less than truthful excuses. By all appearances they are a small company with an apparently very sleazy CEO who, as of March 16, 2014, were "currently in the process of running our fifty-second project on Kickstarter". surprise And I know that they've launched at least a few more projects since then.

It seems to me that this is a company who discovered the crowdfunding phenomenon, got some giant dollar signs in their eyes, and proceeded to launch as many projects as they possibly could, regardless of the company's ability to actually produce that many games. This strategy has apparently been highly successful as Game Salute seems to be raking in a lot of money very rapidly.

Had I known all this earlier, I would never have chosen to become one of the thousands of naive people who continue to throw money at this company. But now that it's done I can only hope for the best. The price was good, the designer is Scott Almes, creator of the wonderful Kings of Air and Steam listed above, I LOVE asymmetrical deduction games, and this looks like a small, easy, 2-player game that I could play with my wife and other gaming friends.

My general level of apathy is typically high enough that I normally don't bother to make statements like this, but knowing what I know now, I strongly believe that nobody should back another Game Salute project at least until they have printed and delivered every single game that has currently been promised to every single existing backer. Learn the lessons of those who have gone before you: don't jump aboard this sinking ship!!

Now I just have to sit back and see if I've managed to derail my own GeekList with my inflammatory rhetoric... ninja

Estimated delivery: November, 2014

Date Received: January 29, 2015

My rating of the game: 8.5/10

My thoughts: I was initially unsure if I'd back this. While I've enjoyed Viticulture quite a bit, one of the things I liked about it was its relative simplicity. After playing Euphoria: Build a Better Dystopia (and not really enjoying it, despite deriving quite a bit of amusement from the theme and the many subtle ways in which it is humorously worked into the game) and then reading about the initial concepts of Tuscany, I was concerned that, whereas many game designers put a lot of effort into stripping down, refining, and streamlining their designs, Jamey seemed to be turning into a bit of a "kitchen sink" designer. Now, it ought to be clear by now that I think very highly of Jamey (as do most of his customers - let's face it, the guy could put poop in a box and Kickstart it for half a million dollars, though it would be the finest, laser-cut, wooden poopeeples you've ever seen - now there's an idea for his forthcoming game components Kickstarter!) and I'd love to hang out with him in person sometime (us two introverts could perhaps sit quietly in a room and read books), but I was skeptical about piling a bunch more stuff onto Viticulture.

But then when I read the first prototype rulebook for Tuscany, I realized that there were some elements that I really did want to add to the game: Mamas & Papas, Patronage, Advanced Visitors, Property, Special Workers, Extended Board (and some that I probably never will: Formaggio, Arboriculture). So I went ahead and pledged for the Tuscany expansion, and (due to my attraction to shiny things) the metal coins.

And I don't want to go wee-wee on anyone's breakfast cereal, but am I the only one who finds the whole "legacy" notion of this expansion rather absurd? Just add the elements you want to add, when you want to add them, for Pete's sake! But perhaps I'm just lacking in imagination and a lot of people will have fun with this method of unlocking the various mini expansions.

In any case, some parts of this expansion pack look to be a lot of fun, and I have no doubt that it will be a top-notch production!

EDIT: Got my first play in last night with 2 other experienced Viticulturers, using all the new expansion elements except Arboriculture and Formaggio. As far as I'm concerned, this extensive expansion is a smash hit in every regard, and has addressed every one of the problems that I had house-ruled in the original edition of the game. I'll write more with my rating comments when I get a chance, but I have to say that I'm very pleased with this particular item!

My thoughts: Having read through the rulebook, the game looks truly unique and appears to be a blast to play, and the Kickstarter page is full of refreshing humour. Also, this is, for lack of a better word, a "pure" crowdfunding project in that it is about a small group of first-time designers/publishers attempting to bring their creation to life, and I wish them all the best in this and in future endeavours!

My thoughts: Having read through the rulebook, this looks like a very fun co-operative (or solo!) game of sneaky commando warfare during the Second World War. And as with several of the projects that I have previously supported, this is a first-time designer/publisher (and a fellow Canadian to boot!) who is attempting to make his dream a reality, so I wish him all the best in this and in future endeavours!

My thoughts: An expansion for one of the earlier games I pledged for on Kickstarter. Though I still haven't actually played the game ( shake ) I've read through the rulebook many times and have spent a lot of time working on a similar expansion that adds unique races, so I'm curious to see how the official expansion lines up with what I've developed!

Funding platform: Kickstarter

My thoughts: Pledged for the "Energy Box" so that I could give a certain friend some cool Power Grid tokens as a late 2015 birthday gift to go with the custom Power Grid map that I still haven't given him for his last birthday. Edit: And now that the box is received (3 months early!), the tokens look great!

This is for The 2015 MostRad International Minimalist Wallet.

Funding platform: Kickstarter

Date pledged: July 19, 2015

Amount pledged: $40

Initial Estimated delivery: December, 2015

Date received: December, 2015

My thoughts: This is almost a repeat of item #13 on this list. I still really like the original wallet, and the new "international" version fixes one of my only complaints with it, which was that the bills had to be double-folded to fit within the elastic. (This is all somewhat of an optimistic gesture, as I still haven't solved the problem of having nothing to put in the wallet...)
