New year's resolutions? Not a big fan. Pick up jogging right in the middle of winter? You might as well sleep outside if you want pneumonia that badly! No, I'll keep my goals realistic and set them in my own time. Being forced to change your habits on some arbitrary day, decided upon by a roman emperor some 2000 years ago. Ha! People are such sheep.

But this year something special happened, an epiphany if you will. It occurred to me on new year's eve. Well technically it was 2:00 AM on the 1st of January 2014, while I was playing Settlers of Catan. My girlfriend and I invited some friends over to ring in the new year with some good food and some good boardgames. After some wine and beer, then some food and more wine, even more beer and finally something else I forgot, but definitely alcoholic, I had my vision.

I've been enjoying board games for so long now. Got a steady gaming group who meet almost weekly. In the last year I've probably doubled my collection. I try and visit most board game clubs and shops in the greater area to meet new and interesting people. And I really enjoy evangelizing friends and family whenever I can. I love this hobby so much and it has brought me so much joy and good memories. It's about time I start to take this more seriously, up the stakes if you will. So in the spirit of more fun and joy, I have decided to challenge myself:

This year (2014), I will play 100 new games and give a review on all of them.
As a side challenge, I will also play 365 games in total!

Some ground rules :

1 A new game is a game I haven't played before, ever. An expansion for a game I've played before does not count as a new game, because that would be too easy. New games including expansions count as 1 new game.
2 Only hard copies played with carbon based lifeforms in person will count. However, digital versions (for instance iPad) of games I've played in the past do count for the side challenge, but I will try and keep this to a minimum.
3 New multi player games with a single player variant will not count if played as single player. Remember, the spirit of the challenge is to go out (or stay in) and play with friends and family!
4 Games should be played completely, so partial or unfinished games don't count.
5 All games played shall be logged as plays on BGG and all new games will be added to this geeklist, including a first play review. If very few reviews exist for the game, I will also post them to BGG in the reviews section.

Which me luck!

I hope this list will inspire some people to play more games in the coming year. Maybe if this picks up, other people can join in on the challenge. If you have any remarks or suggestions, please leave a comment. ANY thought is appreciated.

1. Board Game: TF22: RELOAD! [Average Rating:6.92 Overall Rank:9035]

Played for the first time on january 2nd 2014 with Miranda, Jurgen and Kurt.

Intro

My good friend and board game partner in crime Jurgen picked up this game at Spiel 2013. The small publisher TF Verlag UG has 4 games up until now. Thematically they're all set in a futuristic science fiction setting called TF22. If you like to learn more about this setting, check out the game page for TF22. During the demo Jurgen kept referring to the game pieces as shizzle, which completely confused and cracked up the author. All people were very friendly, and a kiss from the author’s wife sealed the deal on a signed copy of TF22: RELOAD!.

Game description

TF22: RELOAD! is a bluffing card game that comes in small tin box. Included in the box are some plastic futuristic shipping containers in 4 colors, with an interlocking design. The object of the game is to score as many points as possible while loading and re-loading these containers on your personal spaceship.

Each turn, cards containing score multipliers from a central deck are flipped to determine the color of the container players will bet for. Each player has the same set of cards numbered 1 through 7 plus a reload card. Players simultaneously select cards to play and reveal them. The player with the highest card gets the container and the score multiplier card, unless they are tied. In event of a tie, the second highest number get the container and card. Tied players however receive cash credits. Containers must be stacked on your personal spaceship card, following some rules, which are clearly indicated on the player's guide. You score (at the end of the round) for the number of correct placed containers, multiplied with the score cards you acquired.

If a player plays the card numbered 1, the highest cards are cancelled. Played cards are only returned to your hand, when you play the R(eload) card. Playing the R card, you also get to spend your credits, which can be used to buy specific containers or perform actions such as relocating containers.

The game is played over two rounds that end in a scoring round (so you score twice). Containers acquired in round 1 are kept for the start of round 2.

Components

Lots about this game screams small startup publisher. From the low budget artwork to the plastic models. The models seem 3D printed instead of injection molded. This makes them feel a bit strange, although they have lots of small details without being warped, and are probably stronger than normal plastic. Crazy as it may seem, I would have preferred to play this game with wooden cubes or boxes. The interlocking design at least gives some room for creative stacking.

Credits and score trackers are metal memory chips and figurines. I believe these are borrowed from the big box game TF22. Hefty quality, but they lack a lot of detail.

The cards are great quality, close to collectable card game cardstock. There was some mixup with the player cards regarding the colors brown and orange (or red). I don’t remember exactly, but this was quickly sorted. The player guide is very clear and each player has a personal scoring card on which you place the metal figurine. The score track on this card is pretty tiny, I would have preferred just writing down scores.

Review

This is a set collection game inside a bluffing card game mechanic. It felt like there was more luck in the card draw for the containers, than there was in the bluffing. I did win, but I'm a terrible bluffer, so this clearly means I’m either really good or got really lucky! There are some great smaller mechanics in the bluffing part that seem to work rather well. You have to balance skipping a turn to get your cards back versus pushing forward with the cards you still have. Even lower numbered cards serve a purpose, if you time them well. Guessing when other players will play their ‘bad’ cards is essential, because if you match them, you both get credits.

Intro

This game was brought along by Kurt on our on-again off-again weekly game night. Apart from the gorgeous artwork, this game has probably caught his attention because of the inclusion of miniatures. If there’s one thing Kurt can’t resist, it’s probably a game with miniatures. Also a big plus in this game, for him at least, is the goal. There simply is no score track! I don’t mind playing games with victory points, but Kurt does. We have different preferences, and that’s why I really like to have him in my game group. We both get to learn new games we normally wouldn’t touch upon. Also he makes amazing sound effects during all the moves AND it’s like I have my own personal commentary track playing when he’s around.

Game description

Gravwell: Escape from the 9th Dimension is a strategy card game in which players pilot spaceships that have gone adrift, after travelling through a black hole. Each player controls a colored miniature spaceship that starts in the middle of the board. The object of the game is to steer your ship across the spiraling track, until you reach the wormhole at the end, where you can travel back to safety. The person who gets to the wormhole first, wins.

One problem however, your ship has been rendered uncontrollable, from travelling through the black hole. You have to rely on the laws of physics and some carefully timed thruster boosts. Slingshotting your ship around the other player’s ships and other space debris, you try and move closer to safety.

Movement is conducted via fuel cards. There are 26 in total, 1 for each letter of the alphabet. Fuel cards depict how many spaces you will move. The direction in which you move is determined by the state of the board. You will travel to the object closest to you, even if this means you will fly backwards! Other player’s ships count as objects and there are some abandoned ships as well. Special cards allow you to attract objects.

At the start of each of the 6 rounds, cards are placed in stacks of 2. Leaving 1 card visible in each stack. Players draft these stacks one by one. Each turn, players simultaneously select a card to play and reveal it. Turn order is alphabetical, meaning the letters on the cards are used for this. The seemingly random turn order will sometimes result in your ship being sent in the wrong direction. Once per round you can issue an emergency stop to counter this.

The best tactic to reach the end will be a combination of taking risks and trying to remember the other players drafted cards.

Components

This is probably the prettiest game I saw in a long time. The overall design is really nice with vibrant space backdrops and razor sharp iconography. The provided miniatures are also top notch quality. Cards are very sturdy, but not the best cardstock out there. Because the cards are dark, you may want to invest in sleeves to prevent frayed white edges.

One little detail that caught me : in the corner of the game board, there is card index provided. This gives you an overall view of the card distribution across the alphabet. Good idea, but the values aren’t that clear, because there is no scale.

Review

This is a great light game which captures the spirit of similar games such as Robo Rally, but in a much shorter timeframe. I’d pull this out for a gateway game, to introduce people to the drafting and simultaneous action selection mechanics. Both work nicely together in this game, which still has a lot of unpredictable, but manageable situations. However, the game is short and doesn’t feature any customizability, which tampers the replayability. Still a very nicely produced game and a real eye catcher. Perfect for a warm up game!
