I decided to add a few extra gaming goals for 2014 than I had for last year.

And I got a little more specific, inspired by a Geekbuddy's 2013 resolutions, though I still haven't gotten to the point of breaking it down by a list of all the games I want to play -- but I reserve the right to add entries that do break it down further.

Play more games! The obvious one that everyone who uses this site at all has. Last year, I played 182 games -- this year, I'd like to expand that to 200!

This one is probably going to be tough. With a move planned for the summer time, I'm not sure if I'll have the time off to attend any conventions, and since I'll have my girlfriend on site with me for half the year, I'm not sure if I'll have the free time on weekends any more. But, reach for the sky right?

Host at least 4 gamedays. Last year, I didn't have this listed as a goal, but I figured I would do it more because of my new table. I was off to a great start with the New Year's Gaming and President's Day Gaming events, but then house hunting started in earnest, and I never quite got back into the swing of things at the new place. I did host one "emergency" Twilight Imperium game, and one set of card games with a friend, but didn't do any other larger-scale gamedays like I had at the apartment. I'd like to get back to a monthly schedule, but it probably won't happen until after Kathy moves in with me.

At a minimum, though, I'll have at least one big party for my 40th birthday at the end of October. If you're reading this, I hope you can make it!

Alright, this is the year that I get the Top 25 games (as ranked by BGG) played. At the beginning of the year, I'm only 6 games away (Twilight Struggle, Mage Knight, Dominant Species, War of the Ring 2E, Robinson Crusoe, and Mage Wars). Some of them could be long games, but I think this is very doable, especially if Kathy will play some of them with me in exchange for not having to work.

Expand my collection to include most of the top 300 games as ranked by BGG. That shouldn't be too difficult. I'm basically only missing about a dozen, and a lot of those are actually repeats (generally older versions of other games that I already have)

What I'm missing from the top 300:
Caverna
Time's Up! (but I may skip this one, since I already have Time's Up! Deluxe and Time's Up! Title Recall)
Space Hulk (which I'll skip because I have 3E)
Telestrations (which I may skip because it's basically just the freeware Eat Poop You Cat)
Bruges
Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective (which I may pass on because it doesn't even sound like a game
Netrunner (which I'll skip because I already have Android: Netrunner)
Ultimate Werewolf: Ultimate Edition (I have Werewolf, but I reckon I should get the Ultimate Werewolf, just to be thorough
No Retreat! The Russian Front (though I do have the other version of this, I would still like the boxed edition

I plan on picking up some other games throughout the year, as well. There are always new games that will get my attention, and more expansions to pick up for games that I already have. The rankings will probably change throughout the year, as well...so this one is a little fuzzier than my other goals.

Participate in at least one Math Trade, reduce the number of duplicate games in my collection.

Over the years, I've ended up with a few duplicates. When I lived in Milwaukee, I was much more involved in math trades, since there were a lot more local ones. I would like to get rid of some of my duplicates and replace them with other games that I don't have...at least one is my goal, even if it isn't a local math trade.

Part of that is updating my trade list so that others will know what is available... Unfortunately, I haven't even looked at that list in 3 years.

Consolidate games with their expansions.

Part of the problem with having a large collection is that it takes up a lot of space. Part of the problem with my collection is that I have been keeping a lot of the expansions separate from their main game counterpart. I figure I could save a lot of space if I could start reducing the number of boxes that are used.

Some games are good for this -- especially card games can be reduced to something more manageable. I wish that more of these LCG type games would release products like the Ascension Box and Sleeve Combo for this very reason, but others can be mixed, too (especially if it is just an additional deck of cards, etc). That will give me some extra room for when I finally bring the rest of my collection over.

Move my collection!

Right now, I've got about 30% of my gaming collection here...and another 700 or so games back at my old place in Milwaukee with my lady friend. Regardless of whether this is the year she moves out with me or not, I really feel like I need to get the rest of my collection out here, so that I can start organizing it a little better and figure out how much more space I'm going to need.

Attend at least 12 game days at other people's homes. If I expect other people to come to my game days, I should probably go to theirs. Plus, since I work from home a lot, it is occasionally nice to actually get out of the house. I think it is reasonable to make the time to travel once a month on average...and I think it is probably reasonable to think that I'll get invited to that many, on average, too.

Make it to at least one gaming convention.

Last year, I didn't have enough vacation to go to a convention, since I saved some for moving, some for my better half's milestone birthday trip, and some for traveling back to Milwaukee. This year, I'm hoping to have enough saved for at least one convention. Which one is still to be determined. I might even make it two, if I can time it to attend Gamestorm. At this point, I'm leaning toward Origins, since I can visit family in the Columbus Area, but I have many more friends attending GenCon and BGG Con, so it may be more worth it to go to those ones.

There are a ton of new versions of Risk that have been coming out lately. I have to admit that I'm intrigued. I have to admit that I've never played any version of Risk, but my collection is starting to get more of them than makes sense. So, as part of my goal of making more space, I'd like to start playing different versions of Risk and seeing which ones are worth keeping and which I need to trade or sell... This one is probably going to be difficult, since I don't know of anyone who really likes Risk games, but at least a few of them may appeal due to other themes.

Risk Legacy is at the top of my list of these games -- and I think that I can probably get a family game going, were I to visit when everyone was around. I think I could probably talk my dad and brother into it, anyway, even if we couldn't get a full 5 players.

Risk: The Walking Dead Survival Edition is next. I realize many of my gaming friends are bored to death with the zombie theme, but I still like it, and think the variants here sound like fun.

Risk: Starcraft Collector's Edition. I love Starcraft, both the video game and the boardgame -- so I'd like to try this one and see how it feels. I'm worried that the flavor of three distinct races won't translate, but am interested to try.

Risk: Plants vs. Zombies is one that I think Kathy would play with me. I've played a ton of the Android app, and I think putting it on a board would be just as fun (unlike Angry Birds).

Depending on how those go will determine if I open any other copies.

Play games I like more than once.

So far, my goals for playing are focused on new games that I haven't played before. But there is a huge part of me that wants to revisit the games that I have. Games like Starcraft, Twilight Imperium, Combat Commander, and any number of card games deserve to be played more than once. If you're going to invest in learning the rules, you might as well invest some time in learning the strategy for those that you like, too. Some of the ones that I like are hard to find players for, though, since they can be quite long -- but that's why a convention makes sense -- you're much more likely to find players!

I realize this is another vague goal -- so I'd like to at least try to play the games specifically mentioned in here a few more times each (let's say 3 plays each). Plus Risk Legacy is going to need more than one play out the bat, as well.

I just think this one deserves a separate entry, as it is one that I've wanted to play for a while. I really enjoy MOBA games like League of Legends and Defense of the Ancients, and think this one probably captures most of what I like about it. I like the production values, too -- but I think it will be hard to find someone interested in playing with me. I don't think I need to play with all the characters to get a good enough feel for it, but I'd like to play this one a few times, anyway.

Paint selected minis -- or have them painted.

I almost hesitate to add this, since my painting skills are so terrible. But the idea of playing some games with unpainted minis is almost as bad. So, there are three sets that I'd like to get painted:

Space Hulk
Blood Bowl (I'd like at least 3 teams painted)
Super Dungeon Explore,

I wouldn't be looking for it to be anything super detailed, more like what you'd see on the mass-produced pre-painted minis like Mage Knight, D&D Minis, etc... Just something better than leaving them unpainted. If you have any recommendations for people who can paint minis inexpensively (or tips to make it look more professional with minimal effort painting), please let me know.
