As suggested by Sarah Reed, I'm taking up the challenge of playing 10 games 10 times each in 2014.

My reasons are similar to many others untaking the challenge:

1. While recognising and rejecting the Cult of the New, I'm still a victim of it. I have too many unplayed or underplayed games.

2. I'm not getting enough out of the games that I do play. Certainly, some are only worth a few plays but others have only been skimmed. I don't often get a chance to get good at games, so I'm missing out on a level of strategy there.

3. I don't get to play the games I want to play. Everyone's play log is influenced by their gaming group, and even in the best of circumstances this will exclude certain games. I need to find ways of playing these neglected titles.

The list of 10 is not yet set in stone - some of the choices are as yet game categories or types. I'll solidify these into a single game as the year progresses.

This could prove to be a tough challenge. In 2012, I only clocked up 90 plays for the whole year. Things have picked up some, but some of the longer or less popular games could be a tough ask.

I'll add a comment to every entry below as I play the game.

3 month mark: Crap - 25% of the way through the year and I've only played 16 of these games. The next month will see 4 High Frontier games, but I've bitten off some tough ones here. Even light fair such as Room 25 will be tough to see 10 plays of. And the miniatures games may prove to be the hardest.

EDIT, 12 month mark: post-mortem written up here.

Strangely, this may turn out to be the easiest game to do 10 of.

For years, I've had trouble finding opponents for HF, but more recently a set of fans has coalesced at the club, with there also being a sizeable body of people wanting to be taught the game. So, I've started doing monthly HF sessions. This practice will also get me ready for Colonization ...

As yet to be determined C&C entry.

I admire the C&C games, but have had little luck at playing at London-on-Board due to antipathy towards 2 player games and wargames. Which entry of the series will get the nod is uncertain: while I used to adore Memoir '44, I eventually came to feel it was a little colorless and sat a little awkwardly with the central game idiom. BattleLore was possibly my favourite of the series, complicated by being revised (as the more complex but fine Battles of Westeros) and then revised again (the recent BattleLore (Second Edition)). Perhaps this is a sign I should take on Commands & Colors: Ancients ...

EDIT: this choice has become a real problem and I can't see myself getting 10 plays of any one C&C entry. So I'm folding and going in a different direction with Room 25.

I recognise this is a genius game, but currently it's like bitter medicine for me. Perhaps with a few plays I can get past the unpleasant stage ...

A pleasant enough chore. I played this recently for the first time in a year and wondered why it had been so long. Certainly, it's no massive Euro intellectual number, but I enjoy the game, it plays fast, so I should play it more.

This could be the toughest one of the set. I like R&B a lot, but it had almost no mindshare around here and it's not a short game.

My plays of PaxPo dried up in 2013, simply because everyone else was so much better than me. I'm not averse to losing, but repeated crushing losses aren't a great or interesting experience. And PaxPo is one of those games where the rules and strategy are easy to lose if you don't play it regularly.

Possibly a stand in for another game.

I practically collect skirmish games: Claustrophobia, Cry Havoc, Deadzone, etcetera etcetera. And they're the least played items in my collection, partly due to the difficulty of getting 2 player games to the table. I think Sergeants will get the nod here, partly because i have an interested friend and partly because I think it's a damn interesting system (despite the eye-watering price).

EDIT: resolved to be Sergeants, as I have at least two interested players.

Possibly a stand-in for another game.

I'm fascinated with economic games, partly due to math nerdery and partly because it seems like economics and trading should make a good game. There's a number of good candidates in this category, but I think Acquire may get the nod for being lean, quick and obscure enough for others to find it interesting.

EDIT: resolved to be Acquire.

Possibly a stand-in.

Anathema to many boardgamers, but I enjoy my miniature gaming. But it's difficult to get done: there's a lot of preparation (painting, terrain, models, etc.) and not many interested locals. While FoF is my big interest at the moment, I may end up going with a simpler and more fun (i.e. lighter) system like SMOG, The Thirteenth Hour or Song of Blades and Heroes

EDIT: resolved to be SMOG, The Thirteenth Hour, otherwise I'll never get 10 games in.
