Recently, i was introduced to TV series by a friend. We used to go to restaurant before our weekly gaming session and we talked about space, astronomy, books....On day, he told me that he was a TV series fan and i said that it was not my case. In fact, i had seen only one TV series : Twin Peaks. It was because of David LYNCH, one of my favorite director along with KUBRICK and COEN brothers.

He has recommended me to watch Babylon 5, an epic space opera TV series. I had a blast. I enjoyed it straight away and was sticked in front of my screen, earger to see the following episodes.

Are you interested in TV series in some way ?
How were you introduced ?
What was the first TV series you watched ?

If not, why are your not interested in TV series ? Because of the time involved ?

Since then, i have watched a lot of TV series. As i am eclectic, i have watched TV series like Jericho, Millennium, Forbrydelsen, LOST, Games of Thrones, The Wire, Homeland, Ripper Street...and i have noticed that the actors, albeit unknown, are almost always very impressive. Also, the production quality and the photography are almost always stunning.

According to you :
What is the most impressive actor/actress performance in a TV series ?
What TV series has the most impressive production quality ?

There are many board games inspired by TV series out there.

Were you interested in pursuing the TV series to the point of playing the board game ?
Did a board game made you interested in watching the corresponding TV series ?

A very light week for me, but did get in a game of 1830 so that makes it easier to swallow.

Ticket to Ride: Nordic Countries
1830: Railways & Robber Barons

I got an odd urge to play TTR again and saw that a local store had the Nordic one, which interested me as I thought a tighter map made for competitive play might give the game the edge I was looking for. I was right, I like this map much more than the USA one. (I have not played any others yet. Suggestions welcome.)

1830 is a great game and I *finally* got to play with fewer than six! YAY! We played a five-player game (viva la difference laugh) and finished in a remarkable 4 hours or so. I was set up well for a long game as I thought we'd stabilize, but someone went bankrupt and I ended up with a poor final score. Drat. As always, learned lots of lessons on what to do better next time.

1830 (and 18XX in general) are amazingly deep and enjoyable games. I think I'll try to get more games in that are slightly lower in player count but that's just being picky - will generally always be happy to play.

Ascension Deck Building Game 3
Northern Pacific 2
Bang! The Dice Game 1
Council of Verona + Council of Verona: Poison Expansion 1
Coup 1
Dominion (Base, Dark Ages, Intrigue, Prosperity, Seaside) 1
Maharaja: The Game of Palace Building in India* 1
Sticheln 1
Suburbia + Suburbia Inc 1
Trains 1

Only new game this week was Maharaja, which was dreadfully boring, uninteresting, and way too long. Although not a bad game per se, I would likely avoid playing this again.

3x One Night Ultimate Werewolf
2x Code 777
2x No Thanks!
Acquire
Coup
The Downfall of Pompeii
Glory to Rome
Guillotine
Small World
Thunderstone

Our co-hosts for our weekly game night returned, but due to emergency facilities issues, we hosted again last minute. We played a lot of One Night Ultimate Werewolf, which was surprisingly fun provided the brevity of it (though I still love a full mafia game), and Code 777 was fun as well. We thought the rules as written for reshuffling the tiles were a bit too easy, so we definitely implemented some common variants there.

This was my third play of Glory to Rome, and I'm still not liking it. I got lucky on two occasions with being able to stock up on marble, and I completed the building that lets me complete buildings for 1 marble. So I ran away with the game. It wasn't very exciting.

I'm playing Thunderstone on Yucata now to explore it more, and I'm having fun learning more of the game.

Sunday night, I met with a friend from college and our significant others joined in to play games. We played Guillotine and Small World.

The Duke -- This is becoming a staple for one of my friends and my Thursday evenings. He introduced me to the game a few months ago and it plays like a psychotic variant of chess. I'm not usually a fan of 'abstracts', but I'm really enjoying this one. I keep losing, but I'm enjoying it nonetheless. It's actually given me an idea for my own abstract game; I may develop this idea a bit more.

SuburbiaThis was my second match of Suburbia. My friend Adam got it for Christmas, so we've been playing through it since then. I enjoyed that the game played similarly, but that the victory conditions and goals really guided my choices into a different direction than my first match. While the first game was won with a score of 150, this second game ended sooner, so the top score was only 100. I thought it was very interesting that the scores were that much lower because of a missed turn or two. I would have probably lost had the game gone on one more turn too.

BrugesThis was my second time on this one as well. The first time I played I played characters who were really good with canals. This time I didn't see any obvious synergy with my starting cards except that I started with two princes. So, rather than try to build end-game points by building Canals, I chose to point mid-game by reducing threats and playing the Princes' ability to get 1VP + 2 gold. This game is a bit of a 'point salad', but there are so few points to go around that even an action with 2 points should be considered a 'really good one'.

New Games

Android: Netrunner – True Colors x3
OddVille x1

Old Games

Android: Netrunner x3

Still recovering from the death-blarg, so only a few games this past week.

Despite Mike's dislike for it, I found OddVille to be pretty darn decent for a 10-20 minute little city builder. Granted, I've only played/tested with 2p, so it could very well be the super swingy experience with 3-4 that he encountered, but preliminary run-throughs have me pretty optimistic about the game. For what it is (and it's length), I think it could be a decent bit of super-filler.

In Netrunner news, I got a chance to play with the newest datapack, True Colors I had a pretty epic game as the Professor where I got hit with 5 brain damage via an Edge of World, yet managed to power through to game point with a yogosaurus and morning star making mincemeat of the towers of ice that had given me trouble before. I lost to a double snowflake with only two credits, which let my opponent push through a final agenda for the win. In our third game I was finally able to make my opponent afraid of getting flatlined by finally embracing the idea of work compression (walking through a Chum/Fenris/Neural Katana without breakers definitely gave him pause), though I forgot to vary my ice strengths and his Atman + Wyrm sliced me to ribbons.

Weekly Plays:

Hanabi - 4 (3 Robin's)
Battle Line - 2
Agricola - 1
YINSH - 1

Finally having a Netrunner night tonight, and might also teach Adam X-Wing.

Battle Line

Two quick games with Aerial after the weather got cold enough to find somewhere inside to hide (we've been really fortunate with warm weather during the days on our dates). She gave up on her formations a bit too quickly in the first game (and I also had absurdly good draws), but the second was closer. (Verdict: Liked, but wasn't sure she understood yet.)

Hanabi

We scored 19... not bad for a first game. Most annoying moment provided by the deck: At one point, she had both black 4s and both yellow 3s, and they were playable, so I waited until she discarded one to clue the other in the pair. It worked perfectly with the 4s, but when she discarded a 3 she also had a non-yellow 3 in her hand... so of course her draw was a non-3 yellow. Doh.

(Also, I've been playing horribly online. Boo.)

 10  Hansa Teutonica x1
 10  Pax Porfiriana x1
 7  Endeavor
 N/A  Twilight Struggle x1
 N/A  Warhammer: Discwars x2 New!

After my last 5 players games :
- Hansa Teutonica ramped up from 9 to 10.
- Endeavor saw its rating lowered from 8 to 7.

I have not rated Twilight Struggle yet because my 2 plays was ended at turn 3 and 4. I need much more plays to figure out how far i am enjoying this game. We plan to play it at least once a month.
