This geeklist shows my analysis of the results of 2013 Geek Users Poll, which you can find here

My thanks to all those who participated and commented. Feel free to contribute with your own analysis and comments.

This is the (semi-offical) Geek user poll. I’ve run this three times previously (October 2008, February 2010 and October 2011). So it isn’t really an annual poll. You can see the 2011 poll HERE and analysis of the answers HERE.

Before running this poll I asked Aldie if he wanted to make any changes and he suggested a couple. I also asked users for feedback in a thread. As a result I amended a number of questions, removed one and added another. Other changes were suggested during the poll, resulting in some extra mini-polls.

The response rate to the poll has gradually increased: 700 in 2008, 3000 in 2010, 4000 in 2011 and nearly 4400 in 2013.

Thanks to all for taking part and thanks for making this site and community what it is.

Well done Aldie the Admins, and all of us.

This item title is a link to the poll thread. At this point nearly 4400 users have taken part in the poll, about 500 more than the 2011 poll and 1500 more than the 2010 poll.

3800 of those users also answered the 'supplementary' poll (3000 last time) and 3300 the 'opinion' polls that were in the same thread as the main poll. It seems there cannot be too many questions for most of us!

The polls are still open, so if you want to contribute your views you still can. There are some extra polls and some of them have not been answered by many of the main poll respondents.

In the following analysis I talk about 'us'. That is the 'us' that answered the poll, which is arguably representative of that portion of the BGG-viewing public who are both registered and answer polls. For the purposes of this analysis I'm going to treat this as being representative of the views of the entire population of BGG users. Which may drive suspect conclusions for some questions.

Sex
The vast majority (92.3%) of us are male. While low, since the last poll the Female proportion has seen a large increase from 5.6% to 7.7%.
2.2% of respondents said that they would have selected "other" rather than male or female if that had been an option (2.4% 2011).

Age
The biggest group of us (39.3%) are in the 26-35 age range and 75% are 26-45. These numbers are slightly lower than in 2011.

About 0.5% are 18 or younger
6.5% are 25 or younger (9% 2011, 11% 2010)
18.5% are 46 or older (15.5% 2011, 13% 2010)
Just under 3% are 56+ (3% in 2011) - though there are probably more gamers of that age who don't frequent The Geek and polls.

So the geek continues to have an aging demographic, with the 46-55 age group the only one showing net growth. Not a great indication for the future of boardgames/RPGs, though this should be taken in context of the large increase in the number of people who took the poll (which is presumably related to the increase in the number of active users of this site).

National Identity

So where are we from? This question has been asked a lot of times on this site and answered a few times. The USA geeks dominate, that is clear. Here are the results (with major differences from last time in brackets).

57% USA (52.52% 2011, 55% 2010)
8% UK
8% Canada
4% Germany (3% 2011)
3% Australia
1.7% Netherlands (2.5%)
1.7% Belgium (2%)
1.6% Spain (4% 2011, 5% 2010 - where are they going?)
1.4% Sweden
1.3% Finland
1.2% Greece
1% Brazil (1.3%)
0.8% Italy
0.8% Poland
0.8% Denmark
0.8% New Zealand
0.7% Russia (0.5% 2011, 0.3% 2010)
0.6% France
0.5% Switzerland
0.4% Austria
0.4% Hungary (0.7%)
0.4% Norway
0.4% Israel
0.4% Ireland
0.4% Portugal
0.3% Singapore

Other countries were 0.2% or less.

Only 8 users responded from the whole of Africa (but there was only 5 in 2011, 1 in 2010).
Of the most populous countries in the world, China had 2 users (5 in 2011) and India had 1 (2 in 2011).

UK number breaks down to 6.6% England, 0.7% Scotland, 0.4% Wales and 0.1% Northern Ireland.

The actual question asked was "What is your main country of residence". 91% of us were born in their main country of residence.

Partners and Kids?

76.3% living with a partner (62% married, up from 60% in 2011)
20.9% single (21.5%, 2011)
2.8% are 'other'

Nearly half of us have children - 17% have one, 21% two, 8% three, 4% four or more.

Not much change from last time, just slightly more marriage and slightly more children!

1% thegaminggang.com (3%)

As with last time I'm amazed how few of these sites people are using. Boardgameprices is brilliant and even though it comes top I'd have thought more people would be using it, and it has dropped in usage. But 7% using spielboy.com (which shows the prices of games sold on boardgamegeek) is stunning, even if it is up a lot from 2%!

What online gaming sites do you regularly visit?

25% Steam (Not included in 2011)
14% BoardGameArena.com (10%)
14% Yucata.de (24% - big fall!)
13% facebook.com (30% - bigger fall!)
7% Vassalengine.org (16% - big fall!)
7% DaysofWonder.com (22% - very big fall!)
6% boiteajeux.net (-)
6% BrettspielWelt.de (24% - biggest fall!)

2% gametableonline.com (5%)
1% spielbyweb.com (5%)
1% innovation.isotropic.org (-)
1% wargameroom.com (3%)

There were many other options, but they got 1% or less. So widespread falls except for the top two.

How many boardgames do you own? (exclude Expansions)

The median collection remains at about 100 boardgames. 50 will only just get you out of the smallest 25% of collections. You'll need to have over 200 to get into the biggest 25% of collections.
The mean (average) collection is just over 200 boardgames.
This is all pretty much the same as 2011, which means that we've been buying enough to balance out the impact of people who are new to the hobby.

3% Ten or less (4%)
6% 11-20 (6%)
18% 21-50 (18%)
22% 51-100 (20%)
23% 101-200 (24%)
11% 201-300 (11%)
9% 301-500 (9%)
6% 501-1000 (6%)
2% 1001-2000 (2%)
0.7% 2000+ (0.60%)

How many RPGs base games do you own?

Don't despair RPGers! You might feel like you are in a minority, but the majority of boardgamers have at least one RPG stashed away somewhere! I've not shown 2011's numbers because there is almost no change.

44% Zero
13% 1
10% 2
7% 3
3% 4
4% 5
9% 6-10
4% 11-20
3% 21-50
1.5% 51-100
1.2% 100+

How many Videogames do you own?
Again almost no change from 2011, except the poll only went up to 200+.

11% Zero
10% 1-5
11% 6-10
15% 11-20
21% 21-50
14% 51-100
9% 101-200
7% 201-500
2% 501-1000
1% 1000+

Approximately what proportion of the games you own have you played?
Again very little change since 2011.

10% All of them
31% 90-100%
17% 80-90%
15% 70-80%
10% 60-70%
6% 50-60%
4% 40-50%
3% 30-40%
3% 20-30%
2% Less than 20%

So 40% of us have played virtually all our games. 75% of us have played 70%+ of our games. 10% of us have played less than half of our collection.
