Why is it that some games just look so interesting that you have this strange need to acquire it?

I left the GL open. Feel free to add your own.

I know if I acquired this I would never play it. I own A Game of Thrones; it never gets played. I found Diplomacy once and after reading about it, sold it off, knowing it would never get played. Yet somehow, reading about Dune, being familiar with the series, and seeing all the PnP redesigns that have been done, I just want this. I want to make one. I want to gather all the bits and pieces together to make a version even better than the original. But then I ask myself why? Game nights are rare enough as it is, and even when they happen I usually like the medium weight games better than the heavies anyway. Maybe “if you build it, they will come”? … maybe …

This one teases me into thinking it could get played. The theme is approachable. There are no goblins, space ships, zombies, etc. to turn casual gamers off. The components make the game look nice and simple. But it’s not. There’s no “take a tile, place it in the map, then decide to claim or not claim”. There’s no “this card costs 6 energies, it’s effect is probably better than this card that costs 3 energies”. Truth is, I’ve never played this game, but I get a headache thinking about how it works, and fear trying to get any game group up and running on this game would be impossible. Maybe it just needs a “Watch it Played” episode to show me it’s not as complicated as I think it is. Or maybe it just is.

This game looks cool. All those minis! And from those who do manage to play it, I understand it’s not just a lousy game with nice components… it’s a really good game with really good components! I’m not the biggest LotR fan, but I’ve read the books and enjoyed them for what they are. This game just looks too big for 2 players. I could set it all up nice and ready to go, and my wife would walk into the room, announce “I’m not playing that”, and walk back out.

All day game requiring the full six to play it well. Rules complexity is not low so need someone familiar to help the first time. My gaming group can be stretched to play 3 hr games and that's usually with four. Finding two more and stretching that to all day, no point for me to buy.

I'm hoping I can find another group to play this with some day, the theme is right up my alley and I enjoy games with diplomacy and negotiation.

I keep moving this up, down, left and right on my wishlist. I look at it and think "Modular board! Asymmetric gameplay! Miniatures! Dynamic campaign!"

However...

All my gaming is done 2-player and I'm worried about how it would play with just two. Also I already have Mansions of Madness for an Overlord versus Players style game. Also I've read it's best for the inexperienced player to be the Overlord, and I'm not sure my wife would be cool with that. Also the campaign looks pretty generic.

So there it sits on my wishlist, probably forever.

I keep telling myself I might be able to get this one played on VASSAL (if i ever taught myself how to use VASSAL) but I don't think i could justify the price. Its out of print for the time being anyway.

add merchants and marauders to this list as well.

I won't lie. I do already own this, and I really, really, really want to play it. But, having read the rule book, watched a few videos, and even listened to Ryan Sturm's How To Play episode, I know that neither of my game groups will want to get this to the table.

That said, my plan to bring longer and longer games to the table is slowly taking form - so, we shall see. But, until then, this will be sitting in my collection, making puppydog eyes at me, begging me to play it.

Takenoko has all three! Too bad the game play wasn't as thrilling as building the little bamboo forests...(I still want it, though)

I could see this getting played two or three times if I tried really hard. Each time I would have to explain the rules from scratch because at least one of the people I would have recruited won't have bothered to read even one page, and each time we will likely forget several important rules. None of the games will finish to completion because "4–6 hours" usually means "6–8 hours," and someone will have to leave. Other than that this looks awesome.

There are already a few games in my collection I don't see playing anytime in the near future. That being said, I want this game badly. I fully know I would never play it, but maybe I would someday?

It's like those friends of yours that live super close to you yet you NEVER see them, and then when you hear they're moving away it upsets you. Not like you see them at all right now, but if you ever wanted to, you could.

That makes sense, right?

Oh well.

Still regretful though.

I have, or have had this on my wish list on several online board game retailer sites, but have never been able to pull the trigger. I love games with a Roman theme and own several. Thing is, I could probably get it played, once or twice, but why spend $30 (approximate price on Amazon at the moment) when that could go to another game that is almost sure to get more play.

I keep hoping it will show up in some fantastic clearance sale and that I could pick it up for $10. Then I could justify buying it. Thought about trading for it, but again, I keep coming back to my reason for wanting (I think it looks cool) and I just can't bring myself to get it. soblue

If I really thought about it there have been several games over the years that I could put on this list. Fortunately, they either went out of print or I was able to play someone else's copy and the fever subsided. shake

I have slowly grown stronger at not buying games that I know my family will not play. (only gaming group as I work wonky hours) They can do some longer games but as a whole still fall more safely into the "mostly filler to just beyond gateway" level.

This is the one I am currently struggling against. If I can hold out 11 more days for the kickstart to finish then I can safely put it behind me. But oh, watching the stretch goals continue to accumulate....

See also, Here I Stand, Virgin Queen, The Napoleonic Wars (Second Edition), La Guerre de l'Empereur (although I did actually play part of a game of that once).

I love the theme (I'm a Napoleonic nut!), and I love complex wargames and rich player interaction. Size, play time, complexity, and theme are probably all reasons I'd never get anyone I game with to play it, though. There is an EiA group in the Twin Cities, so I hold out a faint glimmer of hope, but acquiring a copy is still a problem. I've only ever seen one copy in the wild, and the FLGS wanted $100 for it!
